Greenwood, Downtown South

Greenwood Cemetery is a historic cemetery just east of the downtown Orlando, Florida area. The…read morecemetery was established in 1880. Prior to 1880, the people who resided in the Orlando, Florida area had no permanent burial location. Eight residents of the area purchased twenty-six acres of land for a cost of $1,800. Greenwood Cemetery has since grown to over eighty acres. The cemetery has many of Orlando's past prominent citizens buried there, including multiple Orlando mayors. One area of Greenwood Cemetery is the heartbreaking section known as Babyland and is the resting spot of children who passed away under the age of five. Greenwood Cemetery offers tours usually around Halloween and there are plenty of ghost stories. One humorous story is that of Fred Weeks. Mr. Weeks was a northern businessman who was swindled by three men who sold him useless swamp land and billed it as prime real estate. Weeks responded by buying a piece of land close to Greenwood Cemetery and erected a tombstone with the three men's name on it and the biblical verse, "A certain man went down from Jeruand fell among thieves." The men bought the land back from Weeks. But Weeks was not done with these less than honorable men. Upon his mausoleum in Greenwood Cemetery, he had the men's names inscribed along with the biblical verse again. It is said that Weeks haunts the graveyard, as do countless other restless spirits. Greenwood Cemetery is an important part of the history of Orlando and definitely worth a trip.

Baldwin Brothers A Funeral & Cremation Society: Orlando

The BEST! My mother and I had a very positive experience with the Baldwin Brothers cremation…read moreservices for my late father. A little background: I live in NY and my parents lived in FL. No will and no plans were made other than their desire to be cremated and have their ashes scattered in the ocean. I could never get my parents to plan or discuss any further than that. I get the dreaded late night call from the hospice nurse telling me that my dad has passed (two days before starting my road trip to Fort Myers)... so change of plans, now I'm on the next flight out to Fort Myers. Meltdowns galore...only child so no one to really call and share this responsibility with. Tearful meltdowns on line at TSA checkpoint. Tearful meltdown at the gate... you get the picture. In between meltdowns I googled funeral homes and cremation services local to the Ft. Myers area. I found three places... one super cheap no frills direct cremation service, one really expensive one with extras that were not justified and the last place was Baldwin Brothers which was perfect! I called their phone service around 3am and received a call back from the on-call funeral director and he answered all of my questions and concerns. I already knew their fees since I had done my due diligence online and was relieved to hear that everything checked out and there were no hidden costs. Straightforward and clear answers to my questions. No double talk. No cheesy salesmanship. The service we selected was the "Private Family Goodbye with Simple Cremation". It was lovely and dignified. My father was a simple man and he would have been happy with our choice for him. Our Funeral Director was Ira Blasberg (he gave me permission to use his name). He was amazing and took care of us from the initial start until the end when he returned my fathers ashes to us. He was excellent at his profession. Ira took his time explaining all of the details of the service that we chose and reminded us that we could bring a special outfit for my father to wear. He respected our decision and never once tried to upsell us on anything... in fact, he went above and beyond by surprising us with Military Funeral Honors for my father who was a Korea War Veteran (US Army). Ira called me the day before our private family viewing to confirm that it was ok to do so. I'm a veteran myself so this extra touch meant even more to me. I got to give my father his Final Salute while Taps played in the background (veteran daughter to veteran father)... yes, I am absolutely in tears as I write this. My father just passed away less than a month ago on Thanksgiving Day 2019. The cremation took place a few days later...we chose to not be present for that. After such, we received my fathers ashes the following day and to my surprise again, Ira didn't just hand us the ashes...no sir. He brought us into a nice and quiet room that was simply decorated and read a beautiful poem to us after which he handed me and my mother my fathers ashes with compassion and respect. I can't say enough good things about the Baldwin Brothers care and service. I can only express my feelings on behalf of my own personal experience with them and I highly recommend them. They gave us a very dignified service for our loved one. This is an honest review and I have NOT been compensated in any way, shape or form for this review. Thank you Baldwin Brothers.
