Another reason why my opinion on this school is so low is as a Native American I was unable to wear any sort of cultural outfit or accessories for fear of getting a 1,000 dollar fine and having my diploma withheld. A lot of good families have left over the last few years as the school tolerates horrible children to stay (they may go to the office but never removed from the school, tuition is too important to the school). My son was struggling badly in school and we pulled him from our local school in the middle of 6th grade. Draper Academy and their staff and students welcomed him with open arms. They tested him and he was 2 grade levels behind in math and a bit behind in comprehension as well. This school was a place for him to rest, learn and recoup for a year and a half. He was able to relax, gain confidence in himself again and lovegoing to school every day! This school was such a gift for him. He is now in 8th grade and he just started at one of our local junior highs and we are a month into school and he has straight A's. He is flourishing and able to stay organized and is understanding his 8th grade math. We started at Waterford when my 11-year-old started preschool there, after touring and sitting in on classes at many schools around the Salt Lake Valley. After considering the cost in relation to the education offered, there was really nothing that compared to Waterford. I disagree with the previous reviewer about there not being an accelerated program in the Lower School. Where Waterford really shines is in their ability to meet the educational needs of a wide variety of students. They use software from the Waterford Institute for the students' computer time and they move at their own pace. Additionally, I have had some of my children move at an extremely accelerated pace and others who needed real support. One of my sons was allowed to advance individually in math and receive extra support because he was so much more advanced than the rest of the class. Another struggled in reading and was able to take advantage of Waterford's impressive reading tutoring program. In both math and reading, the students are grouped according to level and work with the teacher or a specialist at their level. The facilities are fantastic; instructors and specialists are invested far beyond the average teacher; and problems are resolved quickly by the administration when their involvement is needed. The thing I love the most about Waterford is that there is a huge effort to foster both the love of learning and respect for self and others. The learning environment is ideal because of this.

It affected her cognitive abilities and she was forced to miss a good amount of school as well as special events of senior year. The kind, discreet response of the teachers and administrative staff blew us all away. They were fiercely protective of her. My daughter is pretty private but the students and their parents who knew were equally as amazing! Character was high with the kids (they didn't gossip much like you might find at another school, held her confidences and, as a result, feel like the school will forever be in my heart. The only issue that holds me back is that I feel it can be very rules heavy, a bit punitive (kids were expelled and punished for little). It lacks a vibrant social scene, can be a bit provincial in its academic and enriching offerings and can tend to mute students from sharing thoughts and expressing themselves. The last thing is that students don't really head committees or initiatives in junior or senior year... they really should and parents should be nowhere to be found. High school is the time to try new things and fail. Prom committee, the school store, a real school newspaper...They really aren't encouraged to as the parent body leads all. This proved tougher when my daughter went off to high school. Other than that, great school with great classes and teachers, special kids and- for the most part- a wonderful, warm parent body. My son has attended the Summit Academy schools since first grade. He's going into 10th this year. I…read moreoriginally enrolled him here because he was transitioning from Challenger School, which has insanely high academic standards, and Summit at the time ranked in the top 5% of Utah schools on test scores. Other campuses have opened now, and the test scores have grown closer to the state average. What's NOT average is the emotional health of the staff and culture there! I've been SO impressed with the quality of the teachers and their support and interest in helping the students succeed. No one is perfect, but wow, the staff and management here and also at the middle school are extremely approachable and really care. Statistically, they shouldn't all be amazing. They're a small school, which is both good and bad. The teacher student ratio is like 18:1, and they're incredible teachers. My son's English teacher last year is a PhD. adjunct professor at UVU and had topics he'd have the kids discuss every week to help them evaluate their values. I actually enjoyed hearing about his assignments every week. His science teacher was given the freedom to create a course of her choosing, so she chose Oceanography and is trying to arrange a SCUBA trip to Catalina Island for the students (disclaimer: not sure if that's approved!). They're just super focused on the kids. Obviously, they don't have the breadth of extracurricular options that large schools do, but when students or parents give feedback or participate, it's completely noticed and they make improvements right away! Staff and teachers know your student by name, and the students can pretty much join whatever sport or club they want to and rise to leadership if they choose. It's an emotionally healthy school in my opinion. I didn't choose it for that, but I've ended up being so grateful for it. I'm loving the adults my son is being influenced by.

The teachers and staff listen to parents and students concerns which I found refreshing after my previous experiences. I also really love how it is a bit easier to get on sports teams, cheer, etc. The class sizes are smaller and they have an amazing IEP program. Mrs. Jeppson really advocates for her students and goes out of her way to contact colleges, tech programs to give her students the information they need to further their education after high school. This is not an uncommon experience at this school. They care about their students.

If you are not the favorite of the administration, you could be expected to be randomly called into their office for no apparent reason. The administration also cannot dispute for if a student stole something and in that case, they just throw the disputed item away into the trash in front of the students despite its value. They rarely fact check any issues that arise which best explained how they fired a great teacher over a complaint of a kid's parent who is menace in class. The teacher's here are a hit or miss. Either they are great teachers or they simply forget how to do their job. I had a traumatic lifehood as a middle school student here and I really really hope they change the administration here because they made my life a living hell.​​
