I LOVE this bookstore!! It has a very nice selection of books, an awesome children's section, a varied (and affordable) author schedule, and a wonderful collection of "stuff", including notebooks, jewelry, candles, and all manner of small specialty items. This is literally the coolest bookstore I've ever been to! It had books of any and every subject you can think of! I especially loved the cook-book section :) There were also tons of cute little gifts and metaphysical trinkets. It's also right next-door to Wildflower Bread Company (the 2 are connected), so you can sit down for some food with your newly purchased books and just hang out :) The staff is very helpful and friendly, and the have lots of good recommendations based on the types of books you like. I also love that they give you a frequent buyer card (I easily spent $60 on my first trip here, so the card has come in handy). read more

The service is beyond compare!! The owners and staff are very helpful, genuinely friendly and quite knowledgeable. The store is beautiful with an amazing selection of new and used books plus they consistently offer a wonderful array of whimsical gifts and unique cards. I AM NOW A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE! I came in tonight for a book-signing with Jenny Lawson and the store was packed! Normally when I am out shopping I have to use a mobility cart because I can't be on my feet for very long without being in extreme pain. I knew that the bookstore didn't have these carts and because of how much I like the author, I was prepared for a long wait in line and if I'm lucky, maybe a corner of the rug that I could park my butt for the reading. While I was in line I asked one of the employees running the area if there was a spot I could sit for a minute without losing my space in line and they took me to an actual seat for the whole reading! These three employees were so awesome and were really taking care of the customers. After the reading was finished and it was time to get books signed, the same employee came right to me and took me to meet the author, very first in line!!! I can't say again how wonderful the customer service was tonight and how grateful I am to be treated with so much care. I have been an occasional customer of Changing Hands for 20+ years and I will now actively choose them as my first pick bookstore in Phoenix. Thanks Changing Hands!!! read more

I really like this store been going for years! Unfortunately yesterday is the 2nd time in the past 3 months that I've gone and had a very uncomfortable experience! Sometimes the staff are very nice and sometimes they are extremely rude and judgemental. I am so disgusted with the negativity we experienced and the way they treated my client. I was so looking forward to Ree Drummond's book signing this week; however, when I called the bookstore to ask about it I was told that if I don't buy the book from them, I can't get a ticket for the signing. Okay, I understand that, but since I already have ALL of her cookbooks, I asked if I could purchase one of her other books and was told NOPE, either buy her new cookbook or no ticket to the signing ... so disappointed :( read more

This is a great place to relax, enjoy a good book and have an adult beverage. I purchased a gift card a year ago for my daughter. The gift card was lost. My credit card company was able to locate the transaction and provide the necessary information needed to cancel the lost card. This company issued a new gift card in it's place. This bookstore is the love of my life. I would love to become a children's author someday, so I am always on the lookout for bookstores with a great selection of children's literature. Changing Hands has a wide variety of books and gadgets for book lovers. The shelves are neatly filled with new and used books (used books have colored dots on the binding), and the store is always neat, clean, and full of helpful and friendly employees. I bought a magnetic stand-up board this year with word magnets so my second graders could leave me silly sentences to display. I find this bookstore inspiring and life-giving. They also have a punch card where for every ten dollars you spend, they will stamp the card, and after ten $10 purchases (or $100 spent, for those of you who don't want to do math today), you receive $10 off your next purchase. I love this bookstore. I took my one-year old yesterday because we had to get out of the house while we had people there working. I needed something to DO with her, and it had to be close to someplace good for lunch... Changing hands was PERFECT. Our morning went like this: My little one playing on the train table (literally ON it... ugh, kids!), up the step to look pull a dozen books off the shelf, look through them, then back to the train table to throw everything onto the floor with an "uh-oh" as each one dropped, back up the steps to check out their stuffed animals and toys, all the while I'm doing damage control and cleaning up after her, as I scan the shelves for some used books at my step daughter's reading level... SUCCESS! I found a cute early reader for her for $1.50! After our lunch at Wildflower, I came back to Changing Hands and got some adorable thank you notes to send out for my daughter's first birthday party. All in all, it was a fun, productive morning and I can't wait to spend another morning here with my daughter. read more

Although a bit more pricey than your Amazon Prime and definitely not as large of a selection as a Barnes and Noble, this place just can not be beat. This is my go to for gifts of any occasion and when I'm wanting to treat myself to something new that may not be available elsewhere I stop in here. I often will visit even just to walk around. They have such a unique selection of books and gifts that you literally discover new treasures every time. Another awesome feature, a lot of times you can the books you are looking for signed by the authors. Just a little added touch that goes a long way when adding to my own or my friends libraries! read more

This is the best bookstore in Arizona. And that's because it's not a bookstore in the contemporary sense; it's a home. Remember what the community library was when you were little? That's what Changing Hands is for me and my friends. You enter the building, greeted by smiling employees, good smelling fragrances waffling from candles, body lotions, and scented oils, gaze at the pretty gadgets and funny toys, stare fondly at the beautifully bound journals (OK that's pure me), and are also happily greeted by tons of special book stands with new books, featured items from NPR, and personalized recommendations by the staff. Then there are the books. A great mix of used and new books give a perfect range of things to look at and buy. Comfortable chairs and roomy aisles make you feel comfortable and unrushed. Author events, bookclubs, fun art services and products for sale gives it a community feel. The only thing about this gem of a place is that you really go for the atmosphere and to browse and find new books. If you have one book in mind that is rare, out-of-print, or random, you'll want to call and order it first. It's definitely not a Borders or Barnes and Noble, with their "every book under the sun" catalog. But it's where I go when I want to find a good read, hang with friends, and just feel good about myself. read more

Telephoned my order for Ozzy a couple days before the Saturday signing event and paid by credit card. Sales person was cordial and said I could pick up my book beginning anytime Sunday. When I travelled 20 miles to the store on Sunday they said they could not give me my book because they still hadn't processed them? I asked what "processed" meant and they couldn't answer and said they had a lot more people at the event on Saturday then expected. I told them that does not answer my question. I asked to see the manager. The manager simply said sorry, we can't give you your book. I asked if they had the books in the store. He said yes. I said you have my money since I paid by credit card right? Again he said yes. I told the manager I drove over 20 miles based on the fact that I was told by his coworker that I could pick up my book on Sunday. He was emotionless, shrugged his shoulders and said "sorry, next time call before you come down"! I still don't understand this at all. It simply makes no sense.
