It's a very small museum/science center but you simply can't beat the views and location and it's a must stop for families with little kids visiting Burlington. This is a small private museum that turned out to be a little gem. By the end, he was holding her hand and hearing stories with great interest, including the tour of the kitchen garden and outside grounds. She passed along some really interesting anecdotes about Ethan Allen, his family, and general life in the wilderness. Ask your docent why women wore wool aprons in the kitchen, decided who was "worth their salt", and what "pop goes the weasel" means. Since most families traveled by water (and on the ice in the winter), there is also a neat exhibit of a large row boat (sort of the mini-van of its day) which helps to provide context of how arduous it was to bring goods back and forth to your farm. There is a small gift shop (with a good assortment of books and smalls) and exhibit area that also has a mock tavern. Depending on your interest level, the tour could take 15 min. or 2 hours- so this trip will not consume your whole day. The tour does involve a short walk (wear comfortable shoes) from the information center to the homestead (which I don't think is accessible to wheel chairs), but all of it is shaded and easy to manage (even in the upper 90s). If you are traveling in the heat, I would recommend bringing water- there really aren't any stores nearby to pop into.

The preserve covers about 83-85 acres and features easy, well‑marked trails that gently wind through former farm fields, meadows, and mixed hardwood forest. It truly feels like an outdoor museum--perfect for a relaxed morning stroll with plenty of fresh air and natural beauty. Goodsell Ridge sits atop part of the Chazy Fossil Reef, dating back around 480 million years, making it one of the oldest known diverse fossil reefs on earth. You can actually spot ancient marine fossils--trilobites, early cephalopods, gastropods, stromatolites--embedded in the limestone underfoot and on exposed outcrops. A highlight is the "Walk Through Time" trail: a mile-long outdoor exhibit featuring about 80 colorful panels that guide you through Earth's history from its origins to modern day. We parked easily at the Quarry Road lot and picked up orientation tips from the kiosk and visitor barn (open seasonally), which includes fossil displays and videos. Though it's a self‑guided visit, everything felt thoughtfully arranged and cared for--trail upkeep, signage, and interpretive materials reflect a real commitment to education and conservation, managed by the Isle La Motte Preservation Trust and Lake Champlain Land Trust. While there were a handful of exhibitors with excellent bites, most of the food was of the cheese/sausage sort routinely found. The wine pours were also so skimpy ( well below the typical tasting pour) that it was hard to even taste. You could hit all the wine booths and probably have a half a glass total. Some of the wines can easily be found at Trader Joe's. My wine glass was yucky from finger food and a worker told me I had to clean it in the water fountain rather than give me a new one. Although the venue didn't seem full, lines backed up with people talking to the vendors so there was a lot of waiting. There were a few cocktail tables set up but not much seating. Overall I would say if you're a couple $200 could buy a really lovely dinner out... which is what you'll wish you did instead.

Hatchet's Twelve-Hour Smoked Boyden Farm Brisket with Pickleback Slaw was also very good. Our House's Famous Award-winning Clam Chowder topped with deep fried clam belly was delicious. Honey Road's Sweet Harissa Chicken Wings were to die for. La Planque had an inventive Gravlox with caviar, seaweed yogurt. It's a place I'd definitely eat at in QC. Sisters of Anarchy's ice creams were inventive flavors. I tried the Dirty Anne (yellow Anne raspberries with a light chocolate base) and Chocolate Anarchy (dark chocolate). Both were pretty good, but not as rich as I would have expected in terms of flavors. It may have been because the portion was just a taster spoon size, so I would like to give them a try at their actual establishment. There was a very interesting very eclectic Exhibits. All were interesting but some of the standouts to me were the Japanese Kimonos and the inspiration for works by contemporary artists and the local artist pieces reflecting the beauty and culture of Vermont. There was a large gallery that had a huge range of works by students and faculty of UVM. The Museum is small and very doable in an hour. It is also free. You don't have to be a member of the University to get in. It is good to note that the museum follows the academic calendar - September through May and is open Tuesday - Saturday. You should come here if interested in local artists and history. Be sure to know when school is in session, because if it's not the museum will be closed. It's free. This is among the few such museums. A lot of local art. Lots of things to check out in a small space. Amazing how much is packed in. This still won't take long to get through. Among the most notable objects is the sphere object on the cover of the Phish album Round Room. This is located just inside the main entrance, so be sure to see that. Also there's some ancient stuff like the Egyptian artifacts. The paintings collection has a few notable ones among these. For sure the best thing about it is that it's free. It's been free for awhile, but unfortunately it's only open when the college is also open. There's lots to check out if interested in local artists, and Vermont.
