I have so many great things to say, but I'll try to keep it brief. If you're reading this review…read moreand seriously interested in the Martial Arts, stop by and check out a class. You've made it this far, keep going! The outside dojo is unprecedented! I called for an initial visit with my three daughters several years ago, and we are still engaged and challenged every night. Red Dragon is a friendly family dojo which maintains a high degree of professionalism. The instruction is traditional and focused on the martial arts, while also adapted to the times. Shidoshi TJ has poured his heart and soul into this school for years and it shows!

Since I am 48 years old, I worry that my physical conditioning will not allow me to protect them if I had to. My personal motivation is to better myself both mentally and physically so I can be a better person and father. Red Dragon pushes me to accomplish this, and Sensei TJ is an effective motivator. I have been a teacher with ASD for over 20 years, so I have been around all types of people young and old. Sensei TJ is as "real" as they come. He says what is on his mind and he will not lie to or coddle his students. He absolutely loves martial arts training and physical fitness. He is a wealth of knowledge about first aid, all types of weapons (including firearms), traditional Chinese forms, boxing, wrestling, and practical applications for self-defense. Sensei loves to tell stories about his past and the lessons he learned growing up in Alaska. He wants to make sure that the young people in his school make good decisions and are accountable for their actions. Red Dragon is not a "black belt factory." It is not a dojo that is motivated by money. Instead, the focus is on training and consistency. Sensei TJ always tells us that life is about choices, and you either choose to dedicate your time and train hard or choose not to. I am a busy person just like everyone else, but I make time to come 2 to 3 times a week. The dojo itself is beautiful! Sensei has spent a lot of time and effort to make both the inside dojo and the outside dojo very functional and visually stunning! We all take pride in helping to maintain it. The inside has mats, tons of equipment, a weight room and dummies. The outside has obstacle courses, climbing wall, ropes, zip line, weight equipment, weapons, dummies, and the ever-popular throwing star target. You cannot find another martial arts dojo like it anywhere else in Anchorage. It is truly one-of-a-kind. My family has been going for about 2 years now and we don't ever plan on quitting. It really is a special place, and I hope it continues to thrive!

She has gotten all of these things in spades and more from Sensei Okamoto and Shane. I cannot praise this facility enough for their commitment to their students and keeping their standards high. Kids with positive adult role models in the home and outside the home generally do better in life. The studies are there. The proof is in the pudding. It's calculable and observable. My kid was a good child before the classes (or at least that's what many have told me) but it doesn't hurt to continue to foster their good traits and positively reward that behavior with a fun activity. Big plus is that she's active physically and learning about health and wellness. She has made awesome friends in class, has an amazing time, and leaves with a huge smile.

I took classes for about 6 months when he first started but then I changed jobs and got too busy to continue - I only made it to green belt. Master Ron and his family that run the school are friendly and honest about their expectations. Master Ron expects everybody to hold to the tenets of Tae Kwon Do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. During one of our first classes, Master Ron had to discipline my son for goofing off during class. He did raise his voice and got right in my son's face about it. Later, during the same class when my son got something right, Master Ron put his arm around him and told him that he was now doing a good job. He is just as quick to praise good behavior, as he is to discipline for bad. Which is exactly what our son needed at the time. If you (or your child) cannot handle honest criticism and hard work to become a better person and athlete, then maybe Chung's is not for you. Chung's Tae Kwon Do Institute has expanded and moved several times over the years (we started attending class at Master Ron's house in his basement), but in their latest location they do have a CCTV system set up for parents to watch class from the waiting room/reception area. Master Ron has always allowed parents to observe classes whenever they choose since we started there. The Dojang (school) is always clean and orderly, and students are required to keep their Dobok (uniform) clean and wear it correctly (not sloppy, belt tied correctly, etc.) Master Ron makes sure all the sparring gear and other equipment is in good repair and sanitized after each use. Granted, this is the only Dojang my son and I have attended, but considering that when we started Master Ron only had a handful of students meeting in his basement and now he has multiple classes every night of the week, each one filling the Dojang, I think he must be doing something right.

To Whom It May Concern: I am going to start of by mentioning…read morethat I work in the healthcare field as a licensed professional. Northern Lights Preschool and Childcare is without a doubt the WORST child care experience I've ever had. The staff are rude; most do not speak English well so they cannot tell you how your child's day was or understand what you are talking about if you have concerns and this place is DIRTY. My daughter got into a lottery school last minute and since her Kindergarten was half day I needed childcare for the other half of the day. This was the only place I could find that would accept her on such short notice that could pick her up from school and bring her to the daycare. They forgot to pick her up from school and blamed me. When I called to complain about them not picking my child up the woman argued and then hung up on me! They also never knew where my child was and I had to go to 3 or 4 different rooms every day to find her and each staff would say "She's not here today." When I complained to the manager about it being ridiculous that every day no one can tell me where my child is she simply nodded but offered no solutions. They most of the time could not even remember who my child was and would send me to where some other child was thinking I was their mother... When I did call to report she was ill and be home sick for the day, later I would get an angry call from their driver saying she is at the school and my daughter is not there so she is leaving! They do not tell the children to wash their hands, the staff does not wash their hands. My daughter had an accident and did not have extra clothes, instead of them calling me to bring her clothes they had her remove her soiled clothes and wear JUST snow pants for the rest of the day. My daughter was very embarrassed!!! They also kept telling her religious things like "666 is a bad number" and "God is your real Dad." She's 6, she does not need to be told about bad numbers and they don't even know if we are a religious family. Very inappropriate. Very high turnover of staff, and staff are not knowledgeable about childhood growth and development, other than the Eye Level program. I would never bring an infant there for care. The rooms are packed to the MAX and honestly are probably over what they are supposed to be at times. I have seen staff physically push children. I do not qualify for daycare assistance and paid out of pocket the entire time which was $650.00 per month and always on time. As soon as kindergarten was over I put in notice that my child would no longer be attending including the date of her last day. She only went there 8 days of the last month. One would think $650.00 cut in half right so the amount owed would be $325.00. Not the case as the manager decided to charge me their "daily" charge for the last few days which she said herself "Is more expensive" which amounted to $450.00 for 8 days of day care! I told her that this was an outrageous amount and again she just nods but obviously doesn't care just wants money. There are also a lot of intoxicated homeless people that hang out outside of the day care, which is not the day cares fault but there is obviously no effort to make that change. They also do not notify you very well when they will be closed. They hang up one sign that is plastered up between many other signs that are always hanging up on plain white paper with black ink. One day when we were leaving on a Thursday the teacher said "See you Monday" and when I questioned if they were closed (it was not a holiday) another teacher who I've never seen before or interacted with very rudely yelled at me "THERE IS A SIGN!" This place needs a very thorough investigation. I would have taken my child out sooner but did not want her to have to change in the middle of the school year and she was not in immediate danger. Her last day there could not come soon enough. This is not a place the supports the growth and development of children, it is the equivalent of having a high school teen watch your child.
