It's comforting to find a space that hasn't been thrashed by visitors and well maintained to allow for nature to do its glorious thing. {UPDATE: I didn't review Chalk Ridge Falls Park. Yelp decided to move/merge my review of a highway rest area in Marlin TX, about 50 miles northeast of here. I asked. They can't fix it. I'm leaving my review and photos right where they are.} A primitive rest area along Highway 6 with some shade. After the drive this far from Waco following an early morning, it was nap time. I was able to find a shady level spot, close my eyes and get about 45 minutes of snooze before it was time to move on. I was excited to hike at this park, but the unmarked trails turned out to be a pain. There are signs about notable trees and animals, but no trail markers. At least, none with words. We were not the only ones confused, as many other hikers around us were trying to figure out which way to go. The waterfall was barely flowing. We passed it and didn't realize that was THE Chalk Ridge Falls. The ponds with rope swings looked very stagnant and not suitable for swimming. There is a very cute suspension bridge with some planks missing. Overall, not a bad place to hike, but there isn't a lot of mileage you can get. We only hiked two miles, and I think we saw most of the park. The small parking lot was full when we went, but you can park on the street too. There was an outhouse in the parking lot, which I did not enter, but I heard from others that it was not in a good state. read more

Pretty scenery and has lots of creeks and tree area to explore. Great for younger kids and dogs but is typically crowded. It's also almost impossible to get lost here as every trail loops back around. read more

I might be a bit spoiled after hiking in Hawaii, but this wasn't really a great trail imo. It would be nicer, I think, if there were more signs or directions on which way to go. There were some nice spots for pics, overall for our small town it was alright, but there are much nicer trails in Austin. read more

A fine little hike with a view of the river. Trails are loops, so despite some sparse signage it's easy to stay oriented. Mostly clean and maintained, but I spotted some trash occasionally due to the weekend crowds. Overall not too bad. Just remember to keep our parks clean! read more

Enjoyable trek through nature. Not necessarily a hike, more of a trail that winds you around trees and a flowing body of water (in November, at least)! There's a good amount of shade for when the weather isn't so crisp outside. Great for a solo trip, with kids and/or doggos, or your elder fam members. read more

We set out to find a new park to check out and this one came up. The park itself has one small parking lot and a gross bathroom. Yikes. But after that shock, we walked down the main trail. It was ok but there are loose rocks on the dirt but not so loose you can't walk on it in most places. There is a very steep hill to the left of the lot and I didn't even attempt it but if you want to get down to the river you'll have to do it. There's not much there. As we did go down the rest of the trail including the decaying wooden bridges. Please watch the planks as some were super sketchy. The river bed was entirely dried up here and then the "waterfall" we came too was pretty much a trickle. I can see it being amazing in the wet season but it is incredibly steep in places and you can slide down the slippery rocks. We didn't get to the hanging bridge or the other stuff but I'll leave that for another time. read more

I was at this place over a week ago before the cold warmer hit me! :-) I travel for work and the perks of the job I like to to be able to explore different places and I'm a nature lover. I usually take some tropical places for work to do my marketing job and i don't care about some part of the states in the U.S mainland but I'm glad I got a chance to be in Texas again and discover this beautiful place to hike! This is such a neat place, the hiking trail is beautiful, anyone that likes to hike this is the place to be if you are in Killeen, TX just drive about 25 mins to Belton area and enjoy the beautiful nature. read more

The park is full of trash. Trails are not mark well also teenagers are spray painting the benches and signs. I will not return.

Gorgeous waterfalls and rope bridge you can walk across. Great for a date or just a fun hike with the family to get outdoors. Trails are clean and well paved and there are lots of trails to choose from. read more

I love to take my dog out on the weekends when I have free time, so I just decide to drive and when she gets restless I look up a place to hike, we happened to find this cute place. At first the address too me to a different place, I wasn't paying much attention so I kept driving and happened to stumble upon the correct entrance about a mile down. I was lucky with parking and was able to get the last spot, others were parking on the gravel on the road.. so that's a minor downfall. The actual park wasn't bad. Since there was water I was expecting it to be over crowded with it being 100 out, that wasn't the case. The first little trail by the water smelled too much of dead fish and I had to leave in fear of my dog finding something and rolling in it. The paths were easy to follow and we didn't get lost, even when just wandering and taking random ways to get places. The second stop we made had a handful of people, there was some trash, and lots of feces everywhere. I wish people would clean up their trash and dog defecation. The water was nice, my dog did enjoy walking and jumping in the water, and it wasn't too cold. Tldr; 4/5. Nice water, too much dog poop and trash on trails, parking is limited. read more

Came here for a quick hike and quite enjoyed it! The main landmark is a humble waterfall where you can sit alongside and have a reflective moment. Not the most impressive you'll find but pretty good for Texas! Didn't have time to explore most of the trails but getting to the waterfall is very easy and is close to the trailhead parking. Probably takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the waterfall one-way. Some previous reviews have commented on the trash but when I visited, the trash was not an issue. Seems like it is being addressed by the park system and there are many interesting/funny signs that warn park visitors about leaving trash. Overall, nice little area to check out in the Belton area! read more

Such a tranquil little park, so surprising to discover this after living in Killeen most of my life. They have hiking trails and bridges available to cross over streams. The waterfall was spectacular, I couldn't believe that this was so close to us all of this time. I would personally rank this hiking course at beginners level, there are some hilly areas packed with foliage for those who would like to go off of the trail and into the woods around the water. There are even some small cliffs available for those who enjoy climbing. Towards the beginning of the trail there are a few benches available for those who like to read in nature. It was really peaceful and we had a really great afternoon coming here and enjoying the natural beauty. Really nice little park, can't wait to explore more in the future. read more

Very nice par, water is cold and running. The views are amazing from the cliff side. And swimming spots are great. The trails are not very difficult to traverse, i do recommend wearing water shoes or shoes you do not mind getting wet as it is very relaxing to wade trough the creek running trough a good portion of the trail. I've found a more diverse trail to traverse now! I still like Dana Peak Park for swimming, bringing the dog, and for it's open space. For a more dynamic hiking experience I recommend coming out to Chalk Ridge Falls. The hike is about 5 miles along the Lampasas River. The main trail isn't a difficult hike at all and mostly flat. There are, however, side trails going down straight to the river or to higher ground which requires a bit of climbing if you want to change it up. People come here to fish and swim off the main trail. On my hike I didn't run into many people, perhaps a handful since it was a Tuesday morning. They do not allow pets (even on a leash). read more

Our favorite place in Killeen! We take water shoes to hike and swim. Pick up your trash, or else the area will become a dump. The only downfall is that nasty locals will dump diapers and trash where they want. However, the rest is pretty excellent for being near Killeen. read more

Beautiful park! Lots of pathways that veer off from the main one that lead to interesting finds/beautiful views. There are many wooden steps, ramps near the beginning of the trail that are not the most stable, so just be aware as you're heading out. read more

My family and I go out to do walks every so often, my children love running ahead and they love going to the water fall an also love the bridge just passed i believe it's cable bridge:-) I was terrified the first time and didn't go across, now that we have been a few times though I have gotten brave and attend the walk over - I also tend to see a lot of yellow jackets on and around it however which is only an issue because I'm allergic, it's nature so not much you can do really just wish they were not around the main walking area. Also some of the trails could use a little love with the fencing My husband says he saw a snake on the way in however I did not see it. Great family exercise though my son tells my mom that he goes to the forest and gets lost an he just loves to talk about it :-) read more

This park is my fav till date near temple,tx. I love waterfalls, woods, a bit of a hilly area not all flat plateau trail. It has 2 trails marked as red and blue. You will find arrows directing the trail through woods. These trails have wooden stairways and amazing bridges in between. I love this park in winter, summer, all time. People mostly visit for fishing and a beautiful walking experience. My day starts on a good note, whenever I visit this park. read more

This place is a good hike for families with young kids. The trails are not too rugged, short, and they have lots of informational signs along the way to educate the kids. I would absolutely steer clear of this place during the high heat of Texas. My husband and I went and we had to leave due to the stench. I do not know what smelled so bad, but I've been told it's not bad during the less hot seasons. Good place for dogs on leashes and same many people with their pups and some even had their strollers. Scenic little spot but I feel it barely qualifies as a hike and the trails are too short and crowded for my taste. read more

I love this walking trail! Great views and path options based on difficulty levels. Feels more like wandering than going on a set course (which I love.) Can't wait to go back again, my only critique would be that a few areas of the trail were piled with trash. Whoever is in charge of maintaining the cleanliness needs to get to work but it would be even better if visitors here would stop being jerks and littering in the park in the first place. Good place to breathe and be calm. The pine trees and the river trail are cool to see. It's an easy trail to get through.

One of the best parks in the area, by a damsite! Not the usual spillway park. There is a pretty much constant springfed creek that splashes down a solid limestone base and over a small waterfall before it flows into the Leon River. Plus a pedestrian suspension bridge, several nice fishing and swimming holes, and pretty good birding opportunities. I haven't been back since the COVID shutdown, so not sure if it's back open yet, but be sure and check it out if it is open. read more

This park is beautiful. The waterfall, the rope bridge, the water holes are all nice. However, too much trash. Dear visitors, this is the dirtiest trail I have ever been on. I saw diapers, maxi-pads, dirty socks, bottles, cans, and chips wrapping paper by the waterfall area and along the trail. Please kindly leave no trace. Please bring a trash bag with you, and dispose of everything back in that trash bag and take it to the dumpster. It shouldn't be that much of an issue. The thing is where the waterfall is, there was almost nowhere to sit or put a picnic blanket on to a spot that is not near trash which includes diapers. It was a disgusting trail experience. I don't understand how you find it ok to be around trash in nature or ok to leave diapers, trash behind. Who's gonna clean up for you? Would you be ok sitting next to others' diapers or trash? So let's take our part to keep nature beautiful and enjoyable. It's in the middle of a pandemic, can we learn our lesson and try to be clean and nice to the nature? read more
