Free coffee and tea all day, big patio out front for smoking, and walking distance to metro stops and other things. About $40 CAD per night. Any place that plays some rare, some well-known 60s tunes sits high in my regards! I booked rooms for my mother and I to stay for 4 days while in Montreal @ Montreal Central. We love hostels - a fabulous way to meet people from all around the world, and sleep affordably. This hostel has several rooms with different bed counts. Private, female-only, male-only, and some coed. For just over $50 per nite, we slept in a private two-double-beds room. It has its own bathroom attached. Yes, it has a cable tv, but there was no need to stay in an watch shows. This city was too amazing to waste our time indoors. There's an open common room with several communal tables. A really nice outdoor patio area. The kitchen is rather small, but all updated appliances. Each room gets new bath towels every day, not to mention housekeeping in general. Check in/out is smooth as butter. The staff are amazing. Ludo checked us in, and every day we saw the same familiar faces working throughout the day/nite. They are well aware of what's going on in the city. Have any questions or need advice, they're your go-to. The hostel has their own events going on throughout the weeks: Free city walking tours to specific areas around the island, cookouts at the hostel, etc. This hostel is not a certified Hostelling International hostel, however they are on top of their game. The awesome location - smack in the middle of the Latin Quarter, and on the campus of UQAM (University of Quebec at Montreal), you can't ask for a better place to lay your head!

*fart noise w/ thumbs down*…read more I've got to spoil this party of a cinq star credential and explain my experience in the cheapest bed per night on a Samedi thru Lundi booking. This is the other end of the price spectrum. The location is great, especially in the summer. It's not too far from beri-uqam metro, I walked it in about 10-12 minutes. Really festive part of the city and close to the action on st catherine est. I'd say for the lady vagabonds to just be aware of your surroundings at night in particular, it can get a little sketch for some when evening breaks. Let's all just be aware of our surroundings in general, eh? It's good for you to stay on your game and not get victimized. It also helps to keep you from losing/misplacing your valuables when you're completely bent off sake bombs at Imadake. I realize I'm rambling, but I'm speaking real shit into this little box in your computer screen and doing the butterfly dance from 1995 all over it. #BOGART. Poetry jam finger snaps if you feel me. I arrived for check-in around 4pm on Saturday and was greeted by a cool dude, pleasant front desk experience. He saw that I booked a 2 night stay in a 20 bed co-ed dorm and gave me the low down on the accommodations along the way to the room. We walked thru the common room, down the stairs, back up a set of different stairs with piles of trash stacked along the side, passed a gated, partially sheltered common area where smoking is permitted, and into a totally separate wing from all the 'swanky' rooms and decor I saw online. After taxes it came out to be $52 CAD. The room was bare and smelt of damp basement moss with brick walls throughout. The lighting and air flow was also shit. It was advertised as a 20 bed, but I counted 12 or 14 at most. Less people, less snoring. I didn't mind that. The space wasn't warm or inviting at all, literally just a place to hang your hat and sleep uncomfortably. On some halfway house shit, but worse. There is one full bathroom in that section of the hostel, and you guessed it... it also reaked of suckieness. There was like a 5 tier shelf inside just full of random articles of clothing and hair brushes and used and abused deodorant sticks. I remember the glare from the light on the floor from the little puddles by the sink and bathtub. Pretty gross bro. Single-ply TP for that ass? No bueno mi amigo. The bathroom door is a wood-framed translucent glass from top to bottom, staring directly in front of the can. I wouldn't feel comfortable dropping a deuce knowing that the person on the other side waiting can see the color of my boxers. I went to take a leak around 3am and saw an unflushed toilet full of yellow with the seat partially dislodged and loosened. I didn't bother fixing it b/c its gross and shit, that ain't my job. One drunk barely awake guy in his underwear and barefoot went in after me and as I approached the door to my room, I heard a huge sound of the dude sitting on the toilet seat and immediately slipping completely off of it, slammed into the wall by the tub and then on to the floor. Gravity always wins. THAT SHIT WAS HILARIOUS. sucks for him but he should have been aware of his surroundings. I told you so. On my way back in from wandering the streets earlier that day, I stepped towards the entrance to see that there were about 10 people who were sprawled all around the door. I literally had to step over people to get thru. What the hell is this? The funny part is that the same guy who checked me in was one of the people on the stoop blocking the damn entrance. He truly gave no fucks. I was so upset I cheaped out on myself by booking this price-point that I woke up around 630 the next morning to beat the rush to shower and avoid other peoples bathroom remnants, and by 730 I was fully packed and out the door with a booking at another hostel on Sherbrooke up the hill. I never even came back Monday morning to officially check out and turn in my key card. I'm not a snob my fellow Yelp community, but I was like... 'dang I didn't fly from houston to boston then take an 8 hour greyhound to Montreal for this.' I'm not going out like that bro. There are too many choice hostels in this dope ass city to sell yourself short. If you book here just be sure to pay for the higher price range rooms or be subject to something similar to what I experienced. Bon nuit.

Their staff is on top of their stuff and there's never a shortage of people to ask questions when you aren't sure about something. Their staff also speaks pretty good English, so it's not a big deal if you speak no French (my friend was very happy). Not only that, but one of them consistently organizes evening outings that usually include trips to clubs or bars. I met a lot of people this way! Their prices are good, considering that you get free breakfast. My friend and I were able to share a room with a bunk bed in a small apartment room for about $270 for 5-6 nights. They provide you with fresh and clean linens, and the bathrooms are well kept after. I personally like the place because it's somewhat of a labyrinth. They have cozy couches in the main common room, and plenty of table/couch seating for all that want it. They also have a computer for you to use/email on, and a phone to call a cab with if you need to. Next time I'm in Montreal, I will be staying here. The location is great, too.

The staff and other guests were friendly, the room was clean and WARM (which was a huge plus for me as I'm used to a way milder winter than what Montréal has going on in February), had plenty of hangers and space to hang clothes, no issues with water pressure or temperature. Really enjoyed the pancake breakfast in the lounge (there were also hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, toast, orange slices, plus coffee and tea)! The room I stayed in had a separate entrance from the main building - you had to go down the street a bit and then the door was in an alley (right on the corner, though, so you didn't actually have to go down the alley at all), which opened into a foyer shared by three private rooms. The room had a exposed concrete floor which was awkward and the mattresses were on the hard side, but these are minor complaints and for the price I'd gladly take these little things over more serious problems. Also, not an issue for me, but the place is not accessible if you can't do stairs because there are stairs leading the the reception and main lounge, and also stairs leading down to the basement rooms. The only thing that was actually off-putting to me was that I could hear conversations from the next room, and during my first night, there was a lot of weird banging/door slamming that I hope was just guests coming and going, but I have no idea why it was so aggressive. The conversation thing would probably be a non-issue for most people - I'm just really sensitive to noise - but these people were keeping their volume at a normal level and kept quiet at night, it was only during the day that I could hear them. A little note that they go by both Auberge du Plateau and Gîte du Plateau - "gîte" is what's on the sign out front, but a lot of their online presence lists them as "auberge". If I were visiting Montréal again and needed a place in this area, I would for sure choose this place again because the vibe was very pleasant, the accommodations were functional and comfortable enough considering I wasn't spending a ton of time in the room, and despite the night noises, I had the sense that the place was "legit".

The guy greeted my boyfriend by his first name (remembering from the phone call a few hours earlier), checked us in, showed us around, and made sure we were good. The room was surprisingly nice, with windows looking out front. It was just under $80 for the two of us to have a private room. Given that this was my first hostel experience, I was quite pleased and made me think again about my thoughts on hostels. The only somewhat negative thing I have to say is that because it's an old building, the windows aren't insulated and you can hear everything going on outside on the street, and also it gets a little chilly in the room. And the walls are thin and you can also hear everyone else in their rooms/common area, so if you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. But, quiet time is after 11 and everyone seemed to abide by that.

The first thing you notice as you walk up the stairs to the hostel is the homey atmosphere of the place. It actually feels like a home - the tiny kitchen with the wooden cupboards and drawers, the "chill room" with the musical instruments, and curtains just hanging in the 22 bed dorm. The place is kept very clean and tidy. The crowd of people who stay there were also pretty awesome. Some people were playing the instruments, others were playing card games, while others were cooking up delicious meals. It's a great place to meet some people to chill out and/or to explore the city together. The staff were also very friendly and approachable. They don't actually have 24hr reception there though, but they leave instructions in front of the door so you can get in the house any time of the day. The hostel was located right in the heart of the Old Port of Montreal, where most of the tourist attractions there. The Old Port is a gorgeous place to wander about at night. One bad thing is that the Internet was extremely slow when I was there (and it didn't work half the time), but this is something they may have fixed since then. There is also a pretty decent coffee shop down the road with Internet, so it's really not a big deal.

There is one per room, but outside of the room there are 3 more available bathrooms each with a shower and sink, too! The pillows and comforters provided are very soft and comfortable. Without the lights on, the rooms are very dimly lit, there is only one window per area that lets in a great deal of light. Although, this is often better than using the artificial light that is very harsh and bright. The breakfast offered is extremely generous because it offered toast, coffee, tea, and a wide selection of cereals! The only downside was that the front desk attendant was very little help to us. He did not know where we could find parking and he wasn't very knowledgeable on what was happening downtown. On the bright side, this hostel is in the heart of downtown and it's right next to a parking garage for University students at Concordia. We have been parked there for a few days now & so far so good (keeping our fingers crossed!!!)

I have to wonder how a business can run without any annual health and safety inspections. The entire kitchen is a health hazard, and needs to be hosed down and scrubbed! including the refrigerator. They are storing the cereal under the sink! Food items DO NOT belong under the sink! Whom ever owns this place is a "slum-lord" who does not put any money into basic repairs. What is the worst thing for a building?! Water!? yet there are leaks on the ceilings in about 3 or 4 rooms, patched up, and the plastic put up is now falling down. Buckets are catching water! Spend the money and fix it! Fix the front stairs, Repaint, Fix and replace the floors, the couches, and the old dingy stained sheets. And for the love of god, either fix the damn stove or spend the money to replace it! Also the wrinkly curtains have been there since 1969, window won't close! It was pretty quiet, Although everyone is involved in noise while together, it was the local trash that lives there that is the loudest and messiest!
