A friend of a friend recommended this place as a must try when we were in Montreal. Trendy? No. Loud? No. Tasty food in an old school setting? Yes! This restaurant reminds me of the types of places I used to go to with my parents and grandparents. It just brought back a sense of nostalgia. We got here right when they opened on a Sunday morning and were one of the first tables there. When we told the servers that we were visiting from the US and that Chalet came highly recommended, they took pity on us (rightfully so) and then gave us a 5 star experience. We got the chicken special that came with fries, baked potato, Cole slaw and chicken soup and you cannot forget about the gravy! I'm not a Cole slaw conossieur but it was some of the Cole slaw I've ever had. Very finely shredded and the perfect combo of tangy and sweet. The chicken was perfectly roasted and I was so sad that I was getting full off of all the homestyle sides that I couldn't eat all the chicken. But the gravy? Good god that gravy, it's been weeks and I'm still thinking about it. I'm not even a big gravy person but this was savory heavy with a kick at the end. They gave us multiple cups, one for dipping and one for slipping! This was a fun stop on our way north. The food was good and the service was fast. The menu is pretty limited but you get a decent amount for what you're paying. The house wine and beer are inexpensive and worth the price. As an American, this is not what I think of when I see BBQ, but the chicken was nicely roasted! The interior was very old school and dated, but that's just the way I like it when it comes to classic food spots. The menu is predominantly all about that rotisserie chicken, so that's what we ordered! You can't miss with any of the full course or chicken dinner meals. My wife ordered the Quarter Chicken (leg) full course dinner with their fresh cut fries and I ordered the Hot Chicken Sandwich with their fresh cut fries. Wait, let me re-phrase what came with the entrees, SUPER fresh cut fries! The chicken was absolutely DELICIOUS. The quarter chicken that my wife had was very moist and tender and came with a side of gravy. As for the Hot Chicken Sandwich, it was a gravy lovers dream with the gravy overflowing on the plate and smothering the white bread like white on rice. And did I mention those SUPER fresh cut fries???? Ridiculously good! Some of the best fries you'll probably ever have. The only complaint we had was that my Hot Chicken Sandwich was supposed to come with dark meat, but they gave me white meat instead. Minor hiccup as thankfully there was that ohhhh so good gravy to dip it in, but without the gravy the white meat was on the dry side. Last night we ordered from Chalet BBQ for a delivery. 1 leg, 1 breast, 2 baked potatoes, 1 Cole slaw for 2. The order arrived a short time after but when we sat down to eat there was no butter or sour cream for the baked potatoes. No BBQ sauce for the chicken. It was all very dry to say the least. When I called the receptionist said I had not requested the accoutrements to go with the meal. Isn't it up the receptionists to ask if we want any sauces. Lived in Montreal for many years and never came here. SMH! This place kicks its chain competitor's butt. We tried to order the leg dinner and add a side of leg, and the helpful server gave us the double leg meal from the "secret" menu. The leg pieces were plentiful and moist and each had some of that crunchy skin and some of the soft skin. The coleslaw comes right away and it's the best resto slaw I've ever eaten. Not creamy, but vinegary with a touch of sweet. To-die-for fries of the best Quebec variety and double pots of dipping gravy without asking. I've been going to Swiss Chalet since they opened in Toronto Ontario on Bloor St W in 1954 right across from the Royal Conservatory of Music . The walls were covered with pictures of Switzerland and chalets or cabins and the great Matterhorn Mountain . The waitresses were all dressed in Swiss miss outfits You'd think you were in Switzerland up in the Alpine mountains. It was a real Swiss experience . Maybe it's because I live close to Notre Dame street, where very restaurant competes with his neighbor. The fries are all natural. Hand cut and delicious. Humans have been adapted to the disgusting taste of frozen fries. So they simply can't tell the difference. Only explanation that makes sense to me. These fries should have put the place out of business, YEARS AGO. After the meal, I read a review from the States that mentioned (hand cut fries) and I almost brought up those disgusting, frozen monstrosities. And that stale, half hamburger bun, too. They may be "hand cut" where he lives, but... I wouldn't even have eaten them. But I was so hungry when I ordered. And there was nothing else in the house. This had been highly recommended to us from someone who grew up in Montreal, so we had to give it a shot when we went there on vacation. It's a real old-fashioned diner-style place, which I love. The chicken was very good, the fries were fantastic (and I'm not a big fries guy), and the service was excellent. No complaints at all. And while I do speak a little bit of French, Chalet BBQ is in an English-dominant area of the city, so they will start speaking to you in English, which was pretty much the opposite of all the other places we had visited. It was announced that this week Chalet BBq was opening for deliveries or pick up from 4-9pm. The seed was planted in my mind. Today while I was bike riding I decided to ride by to see the situation. There definitely was a line up and I decided to wait since it is the best chicken in town. We all kept our distance and it was about a 20 min wait and it went smoothly. I'm going to have to give this place a 5* rating. Not because it's particularly pretty or because it was the best meal of my life, but because from the second we walked in, all staff members were so caring and sweet - it's just so rare to get AMAZING customer service in Montreal! When they found out it was our first time visiting, our waitress was extra helpful and sweet. That's what'll make the difference the next time I'm craving chicken and not sure where to eat... Chalet will be on the top of my list for sure!! They serve comforting, Quebecois-style rotisserie chicken with delicious fries that have a hint on vanilla in them, served with their BBQ sauce, a piece of white bread and coleslaw (not creamy, the vinegary type). I didn't have any expectations as I think it's just chicken and fries. I got the chicken leg dinner which came with chicken soup and fries. It was a cold night so the soup did a good job giving me extra warmth. I thought the color was a bit funky but it tasted good. There were a lot of chicken chucks included. Wow, where to begin... this place is an institution, their roasted chicken is AMAZING! The gravy is AMAZING! The fries are AMAZING! Their soup is... you guessed it AMAZING! There is nothing wrong about this place, the decor is really cool it has this old 1940's diner vibe (it's actually been open since 1944 so that explains it) the decor hasn't changed in 75 years and neither have the waitresses! I'm just kidding but most of the staff is just older women in their 50's and over which makes it feel like you're going to eat at your grandma's. Chalet Bar-B-Q has been a Montreal staple since 1944 and they sure have mastered the art of BBQ chicken, whether dining in or taking out this place is a cut above the rest never to be put in the same category as such garbage as St. Hubert or Swiss Chalet and in my opinion (and this is a big Montreal debate) much better than Côte St-Luc Bar-B-Q. I only get one meal when I come here and although I'm sure they serve other things I have yet to ever look at the menu, for me its all about the double leg dinner with fries and a coleslaw. I have eaten at Chalet Bar-B-Q Rotisserie for around 5 decades. Things are changing. Unfortunately, for the worst. This is not limited to one occasion. Over the past year, or longer, quality control has left the building. The business is being affected. It shows. My last experience. 9:00 pm. Sunday December 2. The cashier greets me with, "We close at 10:00 pm." I think to myself, "What a funny way to great a loyal patron." I am seated in the west side isle, or right side if you are facing the building, at the end close to the kitchen, by a waiter. I remember him in training last year. Seconds later a couple enter. The water leaves me to deal with them although there is a waitress in that section. I say to myself, "I have a bad feeling about this." 3 patrons are finishing up their meal. He walks over laughing and joking with them. Then he comes back after he realizes I am there and takes my order. "That's it he says." The "I have a bad feeling about this." is ignited. The Meal. The meal is delivered lukewarm. I am being generous. I have made this complaint all the way up to management for over a year and a half. The chips are cold, dry, old. This is typical. You can tell they have been sitting under a heat lamp for what appears to be hours. I am not joking. 25 cents worth of potatoes saved for hours. The hot chicken sandwich was almost cold, drenched in lukewarm sauce. The waiter leaves. Not one word about condiments. I get my own. He did not come back to ask me "is everything to my liking?" like a good waiter would do. As I mention at the start of this review, "Things are changing." Unfortunately, for the worst. When I finished eating, to which I rushed, everything was ICE cold. A soggy ice cold $20.00 dollar meal. After 10 minutes (I) had to get out of my seat and look for the waiter. The cashier, the one that greeted me, "we close at 10:00," had to tell him, yell for him from her seat into the kitchen, about 10 feet away, I wanted service. Remember now, I had not seen my waiter sence he served me. The place is empty.Just myself and another couple in the opposite isle. Upon my waiters arrival, he was making me a bill. I was dumbfounded. I said, stop! I wanted dessert and a coffee. Too see the look on his face was like I broke his favorite toy on Christmas. The "I have a bad feeling about this." was in full swing now. I was getting agitated. This was ludacris. He had the attention and attitude of a 12 year old child. He disappears. After another 5 minutes I got up even more agitated, put on my winter coat and went to the cashier to pay my bill. He was just returning with my desert. Its a 20 foot walk to the kitchen. It normally takes "1" minute. As well, there was No Coffee in his hands. It was plain to see the last thing on my waiters mind was his customer. He, and everyone else their by the looks of it, accept for Annie, that tends to her customers, wanted to leave and go home. The cook, if you call him that, had a miserable expression on his face. This is (A) typical. Do you want to see miserable expression on a cooks face entering a restaurant? This is (A) typical! I told the cashier how disappointed I was. How I thought the display by everyone I came in contact with was very very disappointing. It is likely I will not return unless major changes are made. I mean major. It is a 50/50 chance you are going to get a hot meal and good service these days. I can say this with all honesty. Management is sleeping. No quality controls. I love this place! My husband took me here when we first started dating and it was a chicken revelation to me!!! I grew up with Swiss Chalet (until they close). My husband on the other hand, grew up with Chalet B.B.Q. He lived from walking distance in NDG. Ever since then, we I would crave some rotisserie chicken this is the place we would go to. My husband always take the quarter leg meal. It comes with coleslaw or chicken soup. Fries or baked potatoes with sour cream. The chicken and loads of gravy! Pure delight! As for me, i would go for the hot chicken. The best classic hot chicken in town. It comes with fries or baked potato, green peas and gravy over it. A lot of gravy. Only a few days ago I learned about this place, although I have been living in Montreal for almost 14 years and passing several times on the 105 bus in the mid-2000s. I am glad I know about it now! This was a delicious rotisserie chicken! The dipping sauce/gravy is what what makes it particularly appetizing. It is a restaurant from another time, going back 1944, with decorations probably going back to then (and a website from the early 1990s).
