I really enjoyed learning so much about this house. I love history. Admission is free. Come and view the house which is open for limited hours on Wednesdays and Sundays. They are open from 1pm - 4pm on Wednesdays and 2pm - 5pm on Sundays. I came on a Sunday afternoon last weekend (November 4, 2018). The tour guide (docent) was very knowledgable about the house and other general things to know about Lakewood. Many things in the house came from the 1800's era and also from the Nicholson House. FACTS ON THE HOUSE - There are so many so I'll share some of my favourites: - It was built in 1834 and the owner was John Honam. - Original house was on Detroit Ave. before being moved to the current location. - A piece of John's tombstone is the only thing left from the original owner of this house. Nothing else in the house now is original. There are actually tombstones of other people from the 1800 - 1900 at the back of the house and those are original. - John Honam immigrated from Scotland. His daughter, Belle (Isabella) is who Belle street by the park is named after. - "Sleep tight" term supposedly came from tightening the ropes on beds since the beds were made out of ropes. - Sofa in the living room parlor belonged to Rev. Louis Burton, who owned a church in the Ohio City neighbourhood of Cleveland. - Spinning wheel that you see inside the house (big and small) is to spin wool into thread to make into fabric. - House became a upholstery shop later on and had other uses as well. - Necessary chair that you see upstairs is to pee and poop since there was no running water back in that era. There were no actual toilets inside the house during that time period. LOCATION - It is just next to Lakewood Park. The main entrance of the park is at Belle and Lake Avenues. The entrance to the museum parking lot is the next one going West. If you get to Lakewood Catholic Academy at the stop light you have gone too far. I visited this museum multiple events - Kurentovanje, Take A Hike Tours, and Yu Rock exhibit highlighting Yugoslavian rock music. I'm Slavic but not Slovenian but always feel right at home - welcome and entertained. MUSEUM: The museum is located right next to the Slovenian National Home. It is fairly small (just three rooms). You can park in their spacious parking lot. Museum entrance is available through the main museum door, not through the National Home. The museum appears to operate only during special events but there are plenty of them! Usually these events have a nominal fee of $5-$20 (totally worth the experience)! The museum has a permanent collection complete with cultural artifacts, costumes (including kurent), and the original manuscripts written by Slovenia's famous poet France Prešeren. There are also periodic exhibits highlighting the Slovenian culture. The latest exhibit was Yu Rock that highlighted years of rock in the former Yugoslavia. Artists highlighted in the exhibit were from Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Croatia. Check out their official website for the next exhibit and event. You can pick up flyers at the museum to learn more about Slovenia and Slovenian culture. SERVICE: The director of the museum is always so welcoming and personally ensures that everyone is having a great time. The museum goers are very friendly, passionate about their culture, and happy to share. It's always a very cool crowd! TAKE A HIKE: The local tour company Take A Hike recently partnered with the Slovenian Museum and Archives. They did a lovely tour of the Slovenian neighborhood and the museum. If the program repeats, I highly recommend joining. Find it on Eventbrite. I recommend visiting the museum if you want to explore other cultures or your own roots, love folk artifacts, and lively celebrations. Checkout the National Slovenian Hall and Slovenian Club while you're onsite! Both are such a fun time - good people, Eastern European hospitality, and delicious foods! True taste of another culture!

However last time i went the bathroom was covered in pee from the floor to the toilet so i had to leave early. Normally i have epic peaceful experiences, so i dont hold anything against one bad experience because any other time its beautiful and amazing. Its in the middle if no where so sometimes its hard to find an uber back home, but eventually they come lol this place is addictive if you want to me surrounded by beautiful nature and enjoy haunted places . I haven't got the pleasure of seeing any ghosts yet but i hope one day to succeed! Haha

It's gorgeous year-round and one of our favorite spots for picnics, photos, and simply spending time outdoors together. There's a parking lot right by the castle, but if you're up for a little hike, you can also reach it from Strawberry Picnic Area. Whether you visit in the fall for the colorful foliage or another season, it's a lovely place to explore and enjoy a little piece of local history!

Before we came, we read that the castle is a stone ruin from the late 1800s and thought it would be interesting to explore but there was so much going on while we were there, that proved quite difficult to do. There were multiple people and families doing photo shoots in and around the castle... Like professional photo shoots. They had cameramen and lighting. There were lots of children running around and playing and people picnicking on the green space in front. There were just lots of people everywhere. We even saw a bunch of young people doing a full-on LARPing session and sword fighting just adjacent to the castle near the trees. It was really cute. Although we were just there for a short visit on our way, we did see lots of signs for trails and people walking and even though I didn't want to fight the crowds of people, my husband did go up and go inside one of the rooms in the castle and peek out the window at me. There were also benches and tables, but almost all of them were occupied. Like I said, there was a ton of people the day that we decided to stop but that didn't stop us from having a nice time. I'm glad we had a chance to stop here, but I definitely wish it had been quieter and we had had at least a moment to ourselves. I can see from other people's photos that this can be achieved by visiting at the right time, so if you can, I totally suggest stopping and enjoying this cool relic!

I've never visited here to file paperwork, so know that this review comes completely from the perspective of an event space. It was so memorable, lovely and still the best wedding I've ever been to. You can build up the space in so many ways, and if you can find the right vendors you can create a stunning atmosphere that still somehow feels intimate in all its massiveness. One fair warning if you're using it as an event space: the acoustics are a hot mess. Do a lot of pre-planning. Even at the most well-intentioned moments it was very hard to hear. You can't dispute this spot as a true Cleveland gem and a must-see on an architectural crawl of Downtown Cleveland.
