I want to write an update because I've had some sus experiences with the owner since my last review. The pieces at this consignment store are expensive, and I would rather support Wildlife Thrift Store or The Rag Machine. I'm not sure how this place stays open. It's still definitely an interesting place to look through, but I don't shop here, and I haven't visited it in over two years (even though I worked at the hair salon down the street). Main Street is renown for its funky second-hand stores and C'est La Vie is at the top of my list when it comes to consignment shopping. C'est La Vie presents very well and when you walk in you know there's a hidden gem just waiting for you to find. I've found many such jewels in this consumer wardrobe. Fluffy pullovers, velvet jackets, tweed pants, cute tops, even bags, hats, and shoes are up for grabs. As like all second-hand clothing stores you have to dig deep to find something you like but at C'est La Vie it's definitely worth the forage. Unfortunately, I have to warn you that the owner (a French lady) comes across very rude. She's so nasty that it's sometimes intimidating walking into the shop. Although I am a bit biased when writing this review (I'm a loyal "Front & Co" consignor/customer), I've got to agree with some of the other yelpers on here. The owner of this establishment has brought a wee bit too much of that French snottiness with her. I don't know WHAT her deal is but every time I've spoken to her (either over the phone or in person) she's abrupt, rude and never seems to be very interested in establishing good rapport with her customers. It took a really long time to sell any of my items and I only suggest this store if you've exhausted other consignment shops first. The store is cute, has some decent vintage pieces and I think gets decent foot traffic for its location - but not as much as bigger places like front & co up the street. read more

They often have nice looking things, if you're buying. A little expensive, perhaps, but stylish. The staff always looks good, too. However, I agree with all the users who recommend against consigning here. The shop never called me as promised, explicitly told me not to stop in the shop to follow up, and after several tries only answered the phone when it was too late: my clothes had already been donated to charity(!). The owner was a bit rude about the whole thing, too. I told her I wished she would be a little more apologetic about it, but she never changed her defensive tone. Tip: If you do choose to try to consign here, note the limited hours of business and keep calling and calling on that 6th day after drop off or your stuff will be toast, too. I am so remiss, I can't believe I haven't posted a review for this place, yet! I've been coming to C'est La Vie for years (maybe 6 years, now?). Main Street is one of my favourite shopping spots and this pretty little gem is always on my list of places to visit. I would say C'est La Vie specializes in vintage wear with a chic bohemian vibe, which is very much the style of the owner. Just like any shopping in any consignment store, you have to have a keen eye and be willing to dig a bit deeper - it's part of the fun. But there are many a lovely treasures. Most of my favourite vintage dresses are from C'est La Vie and I enjoy bumping into Faustine because we chat about music, fashion, scooters and hair. As a consignor, she always remembers my consignment number, and will make sure to keep my stuff on the shop floor a bit longer to give it another chance before returning it to me. It doesn't hurt that I always have money waiting for me and I get a 10% discount for being a consignor. I think that one of the things that the shop owner is happy to share with you is her knowledge of vintage wares and if you're looking for something special, don't be afraid to ask her, she will keep you in mind and call you when it comes in. And if you haven't found anything, just keep browsing - her music selection is always on point. read more

I found C'est La Vie to be very empty and cold. Not the most welcoming place and it doesn't have a lot of treasure to discover. It was ok, but it wouldn't be a place I would eagerly come back to. There is some really great finds in here for decent prices, but it's sort of hit and miss in my opinion. However, what turns me off of going here is the owner. There seems to be an air about her. - She doesn't come across as friendly. I walked in and she didn't even acknowledge me or look in my direction. However, when a regular customer (?) came in after me, she devoted all of her time to her and totally ignored me. If she wasn't with that customer, she would be on the phone or eating. From reading the other reviews about the owner, I now see what users mean.I also don't find her staff overly helpful either. read more

This store is part of the reason I got into thrifting and vintage shopping. Though the owner doesn't give award winning customer service off the top, she does warm up and become such a treat to interact with. I love her keen eye for bohemian flare. The items she has in store are quite stylish and can spice up any outfit. I also like how the consignment split is 50/50 instead of 40/60 for most other places. I have never had a problem with the turn around when I drop off items for consignment. I will admit that they are very strict on making sure people can provide their consignment number. So a word of advice for C'est La Vie is perhaps updating your database so you can also look people up by name? Other wise, I love this store, I have found many pieces of treasure their and started my unhealth obsession of cowboy boots. read more

For a self-professed designer jeans whore, this is the best consignement shop I have been to. My wife got a pair of 7s for $60 and there was a fairly good selection of guys' jeans. This is definitely trendy/upscale consignment with non-pushy sales people and a zany style. Highly recommended (based on my single visit)! read more

The owner gets a bad rap, but I actually have always appreciated the staff's hands-off approach when going into C'est La Vie to hunt through a pretty terrific selection of pieces that range from functional to unique, at prices that are very affordable especially for Vancouver. I don't like being pandered too and hovered over when I shop, and also appreciate the aesthetics and vibe of the store, not to mention the music they play! As a consignor, aside being a bit fearful when I lost my number, which was largely unfounded as it turns out, I have been very happy with the 50/50 split and with the convenience of consigning here. Unlike the Front, Faustine doesn't send you packing if you bring items in that aren't in season; she gives clothes a chance and for me it has payed off. read more

"There is nothing they can do without a customer #", she explained. The store never gave me a customer number. She went on to explain that I would not be reimbursed, as they take no responsibility for situations like mine. I brought clothes here a year ago and I just phoned and had some of the most unprofessional phone service ever. I could not remember my consignment number and she made me feel very uncomfortable and she ended our conversation VERY quickly. I have therefore lost out on any funds from the sale of my clothing. I'm sympathetic to what needs to be done to keep a business like this going. I also appreciate the unique style the owner has. There are some really interesting pieces in this shop that you wouldn't see in traditional consignment stores, and this makes for fun browsing. But as other reviewers have mentioned, the quality of the pieces are usually fair to poor. If you want to shop for short-term second-hand clothes, this place might be worth a visit. But if you're looking to consign, I'd say proceed with caution. I was told by the owner on the phone that she didn't want any of the pieces I brought in. I came in later to pick up my bag (admittedly well beyond the date due) and was told my bag of clothes had already gone to charity. I accepted that. That was my fault. Looking around though, I found two of the six items I had dropped off for consideration. The owner apologized and hastily ripped the tags off the items and gave them back to me. She didn't even question really that these items would be mine. I was understanding in the moment, but judging by the owner's demeanour and the quality of pieces I'd dropped off, I got to thinking what if the other four pieces were also put up for sale and already sold. Whatever the case, this experience was unpleasant. And the shop overall isn't good enough to make up for this kind of mistake or discrepancy, in my opinion. This place is pretty small, not just size but selection. They have some hip stuff but mostly its modern clothing a few years out of date. Kind of boring when you consider all the different options to thrift on main st. When I went in I wasn't greeted, and never have been there. The woman is always on the phone, god forbid I wanna try something on. The women who shop there are all about size 0 - 2 so no luck finding jeans that fit me. The prices are decent for what they are selling with a few exceptions to this rule. I go elsewhere for great finds. read more

I came here every other week, however, the reason why it has never been reviewed until now is 'cause I haven't actually bought anything for the following reason. 1. Their quality is really hit and miss and they will almost take anything. 2. Their prices are hit and miss. I fell in love with a neon dress that I was thinking of wearing to Coachella, however, went a few doors down and got a better fitting dress. This place is just doors down from the record store that I hang out at, therefore, it is just one of the stops along the way. I actually tried to take some stuff down at one point, designer barely used things and the lady was hot and cold, didn't have much people skills. Really gorgeous and fashionable selection of clothing. They know great style here, no question about that. Which may be why they are so picky about buying your clothes (and by yours, I mean mine.) This is one of the few stores in Vancouver that offers decent not inflated prices on used and vintage clothing, Faustine has a well curated selection none of the junk you see at other places and great taste. I love popping by for chat with Faustine and we commiserate about the lack of well dressed people in the city who care how they look. Hard to find good unique items in a city where yoga pants rule! This is another place I've passed on the bus countless times, and finally got in there this weekend. It was quite a different vibe from Bohemia Gallery next door, but I really enjoyed it. More mainstream types of clothing, decent prices, and lovely musical ambiance. I scored a darling poodle-print silk scarf for $5 (I heart dogs), and will definitely return when I have time to look around in a more leisurely way. I never write reviews but am going to break the trend to support this quirky, stylish shop. I have been bringing my clothes and shopping here for 8 years. Faustine has a wicked eye for style and I love her window displays! her unique sense inspires me to put together some happening out fits. I am often complimented on what I am wearing and have no shame in saying that most of the time it is 90% consignment. My very best finds have been discovered here, including bottoms, tops,dresses, my BEST jacket, shoes and boots! It is a really good blend of vintage and cool contemporary. The owner, Faustine, has a wicked eye for interesting pieces and C'est la Vie is always stocked with such a great variety of vintage as well as new items. I also have been consigning at C'est La Vie for over 6 years now and I don't bother going anywhere else. Faustine prices all her items very fairly which is great for consigning and buying. I have been consigning at this store for over 5 years now and I am always so impressed with the service and staff. I have never gone into this store and not had a great conversation or experience. The owner and staff are always so friendly which is refreshing to find amoung consignment stores. I find many in the city almost judge the items I drop off and are not true consignment stores - many sell new items with limited consignment. C'est la vie is a gem!!! I shopped at C'est La Vie from 2007-2010 during my college years, would make sustantial purchases every time I went there (btw $80-120$, once every 8-9 months). Even though, client service was never that great there, I loved the store, selection and sizes so I continued shopping. The girls were not particularly friendly when I walked into the store, the owner never acknowledged me until she saw me when my way to the till and take out my wallet. Only then would she give me a hint of a smile. When I finally decided to start dropping off clothes there for consignment, I brought in a bag, which had about 6-7 pieces incl a pair of cowboy boots that could have been sold for $70-75 and a pair of Gucci sunglasses that could have sold for at least $50. After signing the handwritten and convoluted consignment contract I was presented, I missed to call the store a week later as I was instructed to do if the store didn't call me in the first place. I called in about two weeks after the drop-off only to be told that my merchandise had been given to charity. Taken aback, I attempted to get a reasonable explanation as to why I wasn't called and why my pieces were sent to charity. Long story short, Faustine (owner) basically told me to f*** off, disregarding the fact that I had been a client of the store for 3 years - I even reminded her on the phone that "I am the girl who dropped $100 there two weeks ago when I brought in the bag of clothes." That still didn't seem to matter to her. The truth of the matter is I think Faustine lies to people who bring in their pieces that stuff was sent to charity and ends up selling them in her store and pockets to the cash. Why does she get away with that, you wonder? She makes people sign her handwritten, dodgy and deceitful consignment contracts, using weird little loopholes to rip you off. Frankly, I waited 2 years to write this review and my deception was not caused by the pieces I lost (i don't actually care about those) - it is just frustrating to realize that you can do business with someone like Faustine and regardless of the fact that you could have brought $ into her hole-in-the-wall little shack and she would still try to rip you off and, worst of all, she tries to get away with it. I told Faustine on the phone, and I am saying this now 2 years later, that I would never shop there again (it goes without saying, right?) and I would tell everyone I know in Vancouver never to shop there. And if you are reading this, Faustine: unless you change your deceitful, unethical and immoral ways, you do not deserve anyone's business and clientele neither in Vancouver nor anywhere else. I'm relieved to read all these negative reviews as I thought I was alone! I also find it VERY cold every time I enter that place. Whether I'm shopping or consigning, the sales girls are always either too inept or too self absorbed and rude to exhibit any sort of common customer service. I have consigned several pieces here over the last six months, and everytime I call to check on my account, a snotty or inept girl says "Faustine will call you later"...yet she never does. I've popped in a couple times to check on my pieces, and noticed that one was no longer there. I thought, great, a few dollars in my pocket - but nope, still nothing. I bet it's been lost and there's nothing I can do about that. The difference btw this place and front and co. down the street is like night and day. I pop into front and co once a month and always have $50 or so waiting for me, and they have taken fewer pieces off my hands than c'est la vie! Rude girls, terrible service, inept business practices. The only thing that has stopped me from picking up whatever is left of my stuff there is that it's too far from home and I can't be bothered. But frankly, I would rather donate that stuff to a pet shelter than let her business get any portion of the sales. I don't even want to give this 1 rating. Negative 5 for me, thanks. read more

I think I may be spoiled by all the fabulous customer service I typically receive in Canada, as I was SHOCKED by the rude, snooty, unhelpful, and unprofessional staff/owner at this store. I no longer consign here. Although the clothes are great, as the owner has a good eye and stocks it with great items. But both of my interactions with her were not good. Makes you feel like crap for forgetting your customer ID number. In a world where we have to remember dozens of passwords and IDs and numbers, one would think someone would be understanding considering our clothes help her make money and that sometimes we only visit a few times a year to check on our stuff. But no, she gets very nasty and irritated if you don't have it. A suggestion maybe to use a computer database or even filing things under customer names? Or another way to track items if God forbid we have other things to remember that took the place of that precious customer number? It's been years and I still remember her saying," you need your number! I can't find it without your number!! I do this all day." Leaves customers feeling bad about something so small. It matters the way you talk to people, regardless of culture or accent or language. People may forget you, your store, what you do or say, but they will never ever forget how you made them feel. I don't mind the customer service, it's kind of absent, but I don't need any feigned cheeriness. However, I will echo the other reviews, perhaps consider this store last when deciding where to consign your items. It took the owner 2+ weeks to go through my bag of stuff, then quickly donated what she didn't take afterward. And either my items never sold, or something, because I never did get my 50%. I like the clothes, I like Faustine. However - I'm writing this now because I needed time to fade my frustration. Over a year ago, I had organized a large garbage-bag sized amount of clothing that was quite nice, and kept especially for C'est La Vie, which is not a convenient place for me to go. There are many other places I could've taken the clothing, but I liked shopping there. I dropped off the clothes directly with Faustine, and called to check in a week later. Another girl answered the phone, told me they hadn't reviewed the clothes yet. I called back two days later and they told me to come in. I work during the week, so I went in that weekend. Faustine checked my account, and searched around but couldn't find my hundreds of dollars worth of clothing nor any notes on whether she chose any of the clothes. I have to assume they were carelessly thrown out or donated. A lot of unique vintage pieces and modern well-made quality items were lost. I was told to check back in a couple weeks later to see if anything turned up, I even phoned two more times to no avail. She never made any efforts to reconcile the situation, and barely even apologized. I was probably too polite in my personal interactions and failed to express how dissatisfied I was. read more

My wife was ripped off by this estabishment. She took a full length mink coat in perfect shape for consignment in Feb this year. She was told "it's spring I can't sell it now but leave it here I'll sell it in the fall". Today my wife was told it sold, here's $35. Mink stoles and short jackets are priced at $125 in the store's window but she claims to have sold a full lenght mink for $70? The proprietor could not produce a receipt, was terse and rude. I dropped off a bag. Called back the next week as I was instructed, and was told my bag had not been looked through yet. No big deal Later that day I saw i had a missed call from the store. When I called back I was told by a woman with a french accent that she was unable to locate my bag. She went on to say how her new employee has no idea what she is doing and has been making a lot of mistakes. She sounds frustrated. I understand, mistakes happen, she says she will keep looking and call me back. Another missed call. I call back. My bag has not been found but she sees two unmarked plastic bags. I give description of the bag i dropped off. I ask if she can peek in them to see if my items are in there but she doesn't think they are mine. She is going to keep looking. Yet again another missed call, and I call back. She opens the conversation this time saying how she wishes I would just check my messages instead of calling her. She insists she does not have my items, but I ask her again to check the plastic bags. This turns out to be mine. We hang up. The final time she calls and tells me to pick up all my stuff as she does not want any of it, as is her prerogative. Initially I dismissed her tone of voice, because I thought there was something lost in translation, but she was rude. Unprofessional to have lost my bag, as well as get upset I have returned her calls instead of checking my voicemail. Would the result not have ended in a phone call anyways, really? I was patient and polite but not impressed. When I picked my stuff up It did not come back to me in the bag I had dropped it off in. It came back to me thrown into a ripped, dirty plastic bag, as if not a single sh*t was given. Does this place have some cool stuff? Sure. Is it stuff I wouldn't be able find elsewhere? Nope. I don't really care that I did not get my bag back, but I do care about the principle. I would never trust to leave anything here again. Real lack of customer service. read more

Say what you will, but i don't know of a better vintage consignment store in Vancouver. Vintage is not clothes from the last 5 years. It's not from Topshop, Wilfred, Rag and Bone or Winners. And it shouldn't make you look like you're going to a Halloween party. If you want the real thing, one of a kind style, and quality from the 90s and earlier, Ces't la Vie will not disappoint. The owner knows vintage fashion and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. There is always lots of new stock, too. So if you want overpriced used clothes from a few seasons ago, go to all the stores I won't mention. Actual vintage? Dig through the racks of chaff at Value Village for hours, or just come here. read more

I have been shopping /consigning at C'est La Vie ever since it opened and Have had nothing but great things to say, the beautiful interior with its vibrant coulors and great music gives the atmosphere exactly what i would expect walking into a vintage clothing store. The Staff and Owner are friendly and there is no pressure to sell! sell! sell!. I have made lots of money and found many many timeless peices. I alway reccommend this store to freinds and family.
