As a former student of Cesar Chavez, I feel it is important to provide a candid and thoughtful account of my experience in hopes that it may help families make informed decisions and encourage improvements within the school.
One of the most distressing aspects of my time there was the lack of effective supervision and response to bullying. In third grade, I was assaulted by a younger student during lunch recess. The student punched me in the stomach and forced me to the ground. When a lunch supervisor attempted to intervene, they were physically shoved aside by the student, who then walked away without any apparent consequence. This incident left me feeling unsafe and unsupported, and it still stands out as a clear example of how serious behavioral issues were not handled appropriately.
Unfortunately, this was not an isolated event. Throughout my time at the school, I observed a pattern of inaction from faculty and staff when it came to student conflicts or reports of bullying. In many cases, concerns were dismissed or not followed up on, which allowed harmful behavior to continue unchecked. For students who are struggling or in distress, this kind of environment can be deeply damaging, emotionally and academically.
Another concern was the consistently poor quality of the school-provided meals. The lunches were often cold, unappetizing, and in some cases nearly inedible. Considering that many students rely on school lunches as their primary meal of the day, this issue deserves urgent attention. Proper nutrition is vital for learning, concentration, and general well-being.
To be clear, I am not writing this review out of resentment but from a genuine desire to see the school do better for future students. Children deserve to feel safe, respected, and cared for while at school. I truly hope that the administration at Cesar Chavez reflects on the concerns shared by students and parents and works toward meaningful change, particularly in areas of campus safety, student support, and meal quality.
I am thankful to now be transferring to Nellie N. Coffman Middle School, where I look forward to learning in an environment that places greater value on student well-being. read more
