An appointment for cataract surgery was booked and I was ready to go! THEN, two days prior to surgery, during the pre-op reminder call, Carissa mentioned that we would be paying $700+ for the procedure. When I asked if this was a deductible, she replied that it was a fee for the surgical center in Lake Mary. A fee?? Turns out, the surgical center is NOT in our "network". Why weren't we informed of this earlier? Our insurance was accepted for all office visits--yet, NO ONE mentioned that our insurance was NOT accepted at the surgical center! Bad business practice. If you plan to see Dr. Scruggs, dont expect any good bedside manner. And plan on allocating alot of your free time attempting to follow up on your care. Upon their insistence. I went and had my bloodwork drawn. That was over a month ago, and after my endless calls to his office, I am still in the dark. You can never reach a staff member and always promised a return call which NEVER happens. I initially booked a consultation to speak with Dr. Scruggs about a former eye surgery that seemed to need addressed again. Dr. Scruggs was quite abrupt with me and then left the room. I didnt even understand what had just happened. I left my consultation not knowing how or if or any details about whether my problem could be addressed or not. On the way out, his assistant gave me a referral to go have some bloodwork drawn. Then when I was trying to find out the results of my bloodwork, a staff member advised Dr. Scruggs wanted me referred to another specialist. It felt like my simple problem was turning into a big fiasco, without a clear path to being resolved. By the way, I am not an unhealthy person and take no prescription medications. Folks, just save your nerves, and go see Dr. Michael Warner in Lake Mary, FL for any eye issues. He has a great reputation, personal service, and has an outpatient surgical facility next to his office as part of his practice. He was pleasant and his consultation addressed all my questions. He will be taking care of my issue without a lot of extra nonsense. read more

I had the worst medical experience of my life here - as a nurse i wouldn't post a negative comment unless I could offer concrete examples of why id never recommend her for cataract surgery. When I first met her I liked her very much. She did my first eye - I had zero improvement for 2 weeks and then my vision worsened (worse floaters, unable to focus or read - even distance. The week before my 2nd cataract procedure was terrible - bad floaters with no vision. I called the office 3 x to explain worsening vision but was said it was normal and I should show up for the 2nd surgery as planned. When a nurse told her my complaints she said she cancelled since I had an active complaint (I was already prepped and ready - had she checked she would have known id complained foe 1 week prior. She barely spoke to me and told me to come see her in "2 or 3 days for an exam" on the eye she completed 3 weeks earlier (that had a terrible result). She also said I could see her partner that same day if I did not want to wait days to see her. Thank God I did since I developed a torn retina that was bleeding a d need immediate Lazer treatment to halt bleeding. If I waited to see her in 2 or3 days - id have suffered permanent vision loss - per her Partner Dr Jones (grea guy who sent me immediately to a retina specialist. Funny - never heard a word from her again. She truly didnt care at all! Now i get bills that see to chage monthly. Not sure if my torn retina was her fault but even an iota of concern would have gone far with me. I wouldnnt let hertrim my dogs nails now........be careful please read more

Dr Moses in Deland was so rude to me. She was curt and nasty. I never have been so poorly treated by opthamologist in 60 yrs. I was referred for vision lost for MS. 9:00am appointment & was told to be 15mins early. I arrived & checked in a good 15 mins early. 25 people sitting in the waiting room already. Payed a $80 co pay that I have never had to pay anywhere else ever. Finally got called back at 10:35. Almost 2 hours after arriving. Went through all the testing that took another 1.5 hours. Most of that tome was sitting waiting for someone else. Went to buy new glasses from them & they wanted $35 more to give me the prescription to walk 5' away & buy glasses from them none the less. I have always been given my script for free & told to buy glasses wherever I want. This place is a absolute rip off & they do not care about patients or their time. My experience was great , my appointment was at 4, they reception staff was very friendly , as soon as I signed in 5 minuets later I was called back, I was nervous because I was having a minor surgery , the staff made me feel very comfortable, the procedure only lasted 15-20 minuets and Dr Scruggs was awesome, I was told in the morning I would wake with bruising and that did not happen, just a little swelling that an ice pack took care of, 5 Star service from start to finish read more

The pain is unbearable and I am tearing a flood. it is over two months to get an appointment. I've been dealing with this practice in Deland for over 6 months now over a $400 overcharge to my 90 year old mother's checking acct. NO ONE has followed through or done a thing to get this back to my mom STILL. I've spoken to numerous personnel over the past few months and am STILL getting the run around. My advice, NEVER pay them a dime until you talk with your ins co. for your own good. This was a $400 overcharge that they told my mom she owed them. They called and asked for payment so she set up an autopay of $100 @ month . Not only did Mom not owe them a dime but they even CONTINUED to pull $100 out of her checking acct after they received what they quoted was owed until I caught it on her bank statement. I've kept all the records and banking info and will be pursuing this further now outside of their office, done with the miscommunication and run around. read more

I was going to wait for Medicare to have them fixed but when I went to the office he told me it could be done for approximately $2,400 per eye I decided for under $5,000 it was worth paying for it out of pocket and getting them done now! I have paid $7,184.39 to date and have received yet another bill for $947.88?? When contacted for routine yearly eye check up appointment with insurance details, front office confirmed that they checked my insurance details and I am good for appointment. To my surprise, they sent bill of $245 after 7 months of visit saying that my insurance did not work ! In spite of raising concerns & their mistake, First time in US, I had to pay bill with proper vision and health insurances. Every year I have free eye check up with insurance company. When I confronted him about wasting three-hours of my time he was very clear that he did not care. I think he has competent skills but a really bad attitude. Thinks he is a primadonna. I have been using this service for 34 years; however my most recent visits have not been handled professionally. My doctor was planning to retire; so he gave me a card for the physician you would be replacing him. I made an appointment with his replacement. This "Doctor" was very pleasant. Gave me the eye exam and checked for eye diseases. Also gave me a prescription or antibiotic eyedrops when I had pain in my eye. The billing department overcharged me for the co-payment on both occasions. I notified my insurance provider & they paid it as an out of network provider. It took a lot of time for me to uncover these errors. As it turns our my new "Doctor" is an optometrist; NOT AN OPTHAMOLOGIST. Also was not in my network, even though practicing in the office which is in my network. read more

f I could give them a minus I would. I moved my 92 year old mother to Deland. She had had cataract surgery in the past , had a lot of visual problems due to age. After she moved here it was time for a check up, we wanted someone closer. I thought the " eye specialists" would be perfect, since there are 5 doctors and one optometrist on staff. It was around 2014 . I took my mom in, she had her refraction for glasses, and was checked out, or so I thought. Since I did not go in the exam room with her, I actually din't know until later, that she was " examined" by an incompetent technician , and not only did not see the docotr, she did not see the optometrist either. After we got her new glasses, I noticed after a couple of weeks she could not see well with them . She complained and wanted to use her old glasses, not her new ones. I called for a recheck, and this time I went in with her. Now there is a different technician, who checks her vision with her new glasses on , and she CAN NOT SEE THE LARGE " E" on the top of the chart!!! I almost fell off my chair! The technician said the guy who did the last check no longer worked there. So I said where is the doctor? So they take me back to the optometrist, and introduce him as " Dr" MacKinder. He nevr examines my mom. I tell him what happened, that we had paid $400 for a pair of glasses that she could not see the large E with. He said well they would not charge us for today's visit ( about 30 bucks) . The new prescription was better and after we went to Sakowitz Eye Center they said it was close to what they tested, but not quite as good. This place Is a complete rip off. We continued with Sakowitz Eye Center in Orange City and what a difference. You get multiple tests, and then are actually examined by an M. D. I did not write this for so long because I spent years taking care of my mom, she passed away in 2016. It's a shame she spent some of the last hours of her life in this " doctor's " office, being charged for being seen by a "docotr" , never being seen by a docotr, and then having to spend hours getting glasses that she couldn't see out of, and finally having to do it all over again. read more
