Attend cooking class with work mates that happens to be led by the head chef of Cho Cho San. Learn how to cook fish collars. Take recipe home and begin mission to find a fish monger in Brisbane who stocks fish wings. Ask Twitter. Twitter leads me to Neil, the owner of VJ's Seafood. He says he'll put some aside for me. Eureka. Drive to Mt Gravatt and am greeted by beautiful fresh Barramundi fish wings. Also buy a few fillets of salmon, and cherry & beetroot cured salmon. (FYI: the later goes so well in an omelette). If you're new to cooking seafood or just like to learn more, each of their product shelf talkers have a guide to "how best to cook" each piece of seafood. Get talking to Neil about fish catching practices and see the difference between a fish caught via netting and that caught by tunnel netting. Suitably impressed, my fish wings and I head home to try and recreate the Cho Cho San recipe. My parents like to order their steamed fish which isn't cheap but it is so good. The "sang choy bao" or lettuce wraps are really good, very flavorful, and there usually isn't enough of it to go around. I want at least 2 cups but usually, there is only 1 for each person. The thin fried noodles (vegetarian) -- "see yau wong chow meen" -- is stellar! Perfectly dry like it should be and flavor-packed. The only thing I didn't love was the crispy skin chicken. The skin wasn't really crispy. Each time I go home, this is one of those restaurants where we will go for at least one meal. It's good to know that it's remained consistent through the years.

This place has almost anything you can think of in terms of commonly eaten seafood (diverse types of fish, clams, oysters, shrimp...). I ended up ordering the surf and turf burger and the burger was MASSIVE. Damn thing needed a streak knife to hold the beast down. They have the usual drinks fridge and ice cream freezer plus a range of fish options and takeaway chips. The prices are reasonable and on the cheap side which is perfect for fish and chips really. They have a range of crumbed fish behind the counter so you can see what you would like to purchase and what you are getting. Some of their packs and combos are quite good. I really like the crumbed fish. It is definitely a take away place though. They have a few chairs out front but it is note really a dine-in place and they do not have the benefit of a nearby waterfront within walking distance like a lot of other places. If I go, it is for the chips to take home on a Friday night.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy tuna from here and consume it sashimi-style. I tried this once and…read morebarely lived to tell the tale. This isn't necessarily the fault of the shop. To be fair, the fish I purchased was not labelled as sashimi-quality tuna. It's just that I've often purchased non sashimi quality tuna or salmon from fishmongers and had no problems serving it up as sashimi. It all depends on the freshness of the fish of course and the stoicism of your stomach. The Fish Depot doubles up as a fish and chipper and a fresh seafood supplier. I don't usually come here for fresh seafood as I find their range limited - they don't do fish heads but they do have salmon tail but who uses salmon tail to make fish stock? Plus, I just don't find their seafood as fresh as elsewhere and I don't mean just for sashimi. I do come here though for my fish and chips. They give a generous portion of chips which is never mushy and their grilled fish are perfectly cooked. So go fish elsewhere if you're after fresh seafood supplies but be prepared to get hooked on their fish and chips.
