Working central was a very frustrating experience. I submitted my application and fee while a unit was "still available", but they did not disclose they had already accepted a deposit from another tenant. They would not refund my application fee due to their error. They never followed up to my questions about application status, and I had to repeatedly call to find morsels of information. I did not sign up for an apartment with Centra, but I deeply appreciated how KIND and PERSONABLE Priscilla and William were when helping me with an opening at 1018 Clinton. Whoever the owner is of Centra, I hope you salute them. Priscilla helped me over the phone, and she understood that I needed the person in the unit above my possible unit to be there and walk around so that I could hear the sound from above. I called back a day or two later, and Priscilla said, "Is this Mills? We are still trying to connect with the tenant in the unit above." I really appreciated the effort she made. William showed me the unit and was very helpful with getting the tenant in the unit above me to be there and to walk around. He listened to my concerns about my overall search and gave me his candid opinion about what might be best for me. He was on time in showing me the unit and very knowledgeable about the building. We've had mice and cockroaches since day one and the problem has persisted no matter how many holes in the walls they filled. We recently gave our notice that we would not be extending our lease and now we have people entering our apartment with no warning Complained to the office of unfair (also illegal in PA) notice to enter the premises and no changes have been made. My son was moving from Kentucky to attend Uof PA. My ex was shown a really nice apartment for him. I was cosigning on the lease. When the paperwork was done the apartment that was shown turned out to not be the same apartment that was on the lease. A true bait and switch operation! The security deposit was returned. When a called to have my charge for being a cosigner returned I was told that they do not return it. I said that is ridiculous ....BS. The woman hung up on me. I can only speak to my experience searching for apartments with them, as I did not end up renting with them. I emailed about a unit I was interested in, and they were very responsive initially. However, once I requested a specific day and time, they stopped responding. After a few days, I called the office to try to confirm the showing time. They said they could not show at my requested time as they need to give tenants 24 hour notice before showing the apartment. Frustrating, as I asked for the date a week in advance and never heard back, but I understood and rescheduled. When I finally got to the apartment, the realtor was there, but she frantically told me she did not bring the keys to the apartment. She said we could knock on the door and hope the tenants were home to let us in. She then received a phone call, and informed me that the unit had already been rented. She was then trying to scramble to find other places to show me. She said she had another "better" apartment around the corner that I could see, but did not tell me any information about it. I decided to go while I had already rearranged my schedule and traveled to see an apartment. I get to the second apartment and start asking questions about it (pricing, features, etc.) and find it does not fit any of my search criteria, so I leave. No apologies from her about the time I wasted traveling to see an apartment that was already rented. She had even called an hour before the showing to confirm that I would be there, but evidently did not confirm that it was still on the market. I lived at their S 12th St location for 2.5 years and loved it. The building itself was older and required some love but was great. Overall very good experience, with minor hiccups resulting in 4 stars. Communication - I never had any issues with them, they were usually pretty quick to respond to any queries I had. Maintenance - Whenever there was an issue, someone was able to come over quickly to fix the issue. Other - Online portal for maintenance and rent payment is fire. Paint jobs are meh. While I loved the character of the old one bedroom, I would never rent another apartment from Centra. Starting with the day I moved in, I had to wait hours outside their office because no one was there to give me my keys at the time they had set. When I finally did get into my apartment, after paying 3 months worth of rent up front, it truly appeared as if they had kicked out squatters earlier that day. I mean the apartment was DISGUSTING. There was dust and grime an inch thick covering every surface and so much trash left from the previous tenant. Before I could actually move in I had to spend two days cleaning. Once settled in I had to ask Centra for the key to access my fire escape which was very sketchy. Also they up the prices of their laundry machines so much it was 10x cheaper to go to the laundry mat down the street. Not to mention the extreme construction and renovations they would do in the building with absolutely no notice which would make it loud, dusty, and impossible to WFH. Anyway, as I am finally moving out they sent me the list of cleaning requirements to get my deposit back and some of the stuff on it is completely unrealistic unless done by professionals. Ditto what Kasia G. said in her review. Maintenance was usually responsive to problems. I also had to break my lease early. Centra allowed me to find new tenants and have them take over when I moved. Had no problem getting my deposit back, and there were no penalty fees since new tenants immediately took over. My unit was nice and seemed to have been remodeled in recent years. However, mice were an issue at times. I didn't see many -- maybe three or four during a year of living there -- but it was unnerving, to say the least. Terminix came by, after I pressed Centra, and maintenance helped shore up holes where the mice could be entering. That seemed to do the trick. (Also, having a cat helps. The neighbor below me had one and never saw a mouse). The people in the main office can be a little snarky at times. But when I caught them on a good day, they were usually fine. read more

If I could give no stars I would. Lived on 18th and pine for less than a year. Nothing but issues when it comes to getting things repaired or getting pest control. Frequently found cockroaches in the apartment and building. They said they would send some one out and it's been two weeks with nothing. This is the second time since October. When I call the office they say "they will check on it and then call me back" no one ever calls back. Maintenance workers randomly showed up for repairs I didn't request. No warning when people will be painting inside the building. Upon move in there was still trash on deck from previous tenants when I asked the company to remove the trash they put it over the fence so now it's just in between the two decks. One of the air conditioning units was broken upon move in. Mind you I moved In in august in 94 degree weather. Old tenants kept showing up to collect mail. I Informed the company of this and got no response. The list goes on. I cannot wait to move out. The apartment is out of date and over priced. This was the condition upon move in. Up until the past month or so I would have given Centra Associates maybe 3 or 4 stars. We have been living near Pennsylvania Hospital with Centra for about 2 years now. We moved into an apartment they had just completely renovated. We have had a few pressing maintenance issues related to old plumbing in the building, and maintenance has always come within two hours, even once on a Saturday night. Centra has changed Property Management multiple times since we have lived here and in the past month we have noticed that the quality of care of the building has increased substantially. Our building has a shared outdoor space that was always barely maintained until a month ago when we have had the pleasure of witnessing frequent cleanings that leave the space feeling much more welcoming and usable. The person who maintains the outdoor space takes great pride in his work and is extremely friendly. They have done a great job of bringing in regular cleaners throughout the pandemic. Everyone in maintenance has always been pleasant and respectful. New property management seems to be a big improvement so far! read more

I have been a Centra tenant for 2 years and I can't speak highly enough of my experiences with them. They are incredibly responsive to any maintenance issues and anything needing replacement - no questions asked. There is a human being available to be reached via phone during the daytime with questions, and they are also very responsive via email. Everyone, from the people at the office to all of the maintenance guys, is friendly, polite and super helpful. In applying for the apartment, I felt that the application process was unnecessarily bureaucratic and complex, with a lot of various small fees and documents to assemble. Recently had a disappointing experience with Centra. My wife and I made an appointment to see a few units in the Fitler Square area, and I received a call to reschedule a few hours before our appointment. We wanted to see the apartments sooner than later, but didn't mind (things happen, right?). Unfortunately, the realtor left us hanging during our second appointment, meaning we drove into the city, paid for parking and waited outside for 20 minutes. We were surprised to never receive a call, email or any other form of communication. I lived in a Centra apartment for two years. Overall, they were always reachable on the phone and answered emails in a reasonable amount of time. They were great at fixing problems in a reasonable amount of time, even things such as replacing light bulbs. The apartment had a mice problems and Centra did provide traps (which worked for the most part). I understand that extermination is not really an option since unfortunately it's an older building problem and if your neighbors have them, they will make their way over. The guys they used for minor repairs are not always top notch however. They were messy and would leave doors open and place my herbs on a wall where I couldn't reach them and then they would tell you that they don't have time to come back and fix the problems they created. Our heater also went out in the dead of a winter storm and although it's not their fault, Centra was not keen on paying for a hotel so I had to crash on a friend's couch. The problem was solved the next day, not due to Centra, but mostly because the guy working for the company they outsource to for heating just felt bad for me. We kept the place in great shape and even cleaned up the small yard area and had no problem getting our deposit back. read more

I'd call them a step above a slumlord. I lived in two different properties with Centra for 6 years. The first apartment that I lived in for 4 years was much better. However, by the time I moved to the second apartment the property management staff quality declined terribly. Linda seemed to leave and someone named Jessica who took over is probably the most unprofessional, immature, and incompetent person I ever spoke with. She literally once called me back to ask if I had to Corona virus by not even saying who she was and simply beginning the conversation with, "So do you have it?" Firstly, can't ask that dummy. Secondly, try introducing yourself, I don't have your number saved, idiot. This company will put no money into maintaining these buildings unless you hound them about a serious issue. Even then, I was left without any heat for 3 weeks in 30 degree weather in the winter and was initially told my heating was working fine. Jessica told me she inspected it herself, but I came home to find no air blowing at all when put on full blast. Once I point this out I'm told the delay is due to ordering a part. Really? Worse than that, after someone tried to break into my bedroom window from the fire escape they never put a real lock on the back gate to prevent this from happening again, even though I asked multiple times. They also do yearly inspections to see if the apartment needs any "improvements" (lol they don't actually do improvements). I told them almost immediately my toilet ran and leaked constantly. It was never repaired or replaced in the 2 years I lived there and I even urged them during these yearly inspections for "improvements." The one saving grace is the maintenance guys who work here. They're usually pretty quick to respond, friendly, and efficient. If you don't mind living in a terribly maintained old building for okay prices with laughably bad property management (sorry if you have to deal with Jessica) you might like living here. read more

Someone was pretty much always available to speak, whether it was for a maintenance request or if I had accidentally locked myself out of my house. The two problems that I did have was a slight mouse problem during the winter, as well as a slightly drafty apartment, but I suppose these are both things to expect in older buildings. read more

I rented from Centra for two years. I had a wonderful experience. My apartment was very reasonably priced, spacious, and exactly what I needed. Whenever I had problems and needed maintenance, Centra responded and typically had someone out within 24 hours. Their maintenance technicians were friendly, efficient, and respectful (my cat also loved them, and like most cats she likes nobody). Having dealth with a very dishonest and rude leasing company in the past (WPRG), I can say that Centra has been a breath of fresh air. From apartment viewing to leasing, they were very friendly, very forthcoming, and very understanding of individual needs. Every building we looked at, including ours and our individual apartment, had been kept in good condition as well. They're also easy to get in touch with, and the online system makes it easy to pay rent, make maintenance requests (which they're pretty prompt about), and buy laundry credit. Absolute terrible experience with this group. Apartment was dirty and the roof leaks. No access to fire escape. Multiple leaks from roof and first time they used a tarp to repair. Tarp leaked and maintenance told us they legally had a year to fix it. Personal property damaged because of roof leak. No access to leave apt in case of a fire- no fire escape. It's an old building with no fire escape. Locked front door to building. UPS and Mail Cartier have difficulty getting packages in and if they do they are stolen because front door lock broken. Our intercom to front door has been broken for a year at least. Office staff. Extremely rude and unprofessional. Stay away from this group. Once they get your contract, they treat you like the garbage in the hallways of their building! read more

I lived in one of Centra's many properties for just under two years. Though I loved living in Center City, I must say that I did not love living in Centra's building. I discovered that they allowed dogs, shortly after signing a contract that expressly prohibited it. Additionally, they are truly awful when it comes to maintaining the properties. My apartment was flooded due to a water heater that had split in half in the unit above. My experience with this company was very unprofessional. I payed the security deposit and first months rent then finally a WEEK later I get a phone call from Amy saying that "unfortunately" another deposit came in and now the place isnt mine.(My boyfriend and I called them several times and either got their message system or amy was not there) Over the weekend we have moved back home, which is a 3 hour drive from Philadelphia, and now im expected to come pick up my checks. Very inconvenient now because we have to find a new place to live and cannot exactly make special trips to see apartments. Update: Today I was finally able to find out what happened. Apparently we dont have enough money/bad credit. Excuse me, we are students with summer jobs/loans/ no credit. My parent co-signed for my place last year and no other students i know have ran into this sort of problem. I tried calling Amy 5 times today. She was either "out" or "on the phone". I tried talking to Dina, who was supposed to call me when she got back...and of corse that didnt happen. These people avoid you and never get back to you about anything. Great landlords. Rented from them for 3 years and had few problems. I was in their building on 30 S 22nd Street. Not sure why other reviewers say "I lived there for five years and the landlord was terrible", why didn't they move out? At the termination of my lease I received my full deposit back. I was also able to get out of my lease early after finding them a tenant and they did not charge me extra. They now have an online maintenance request system which is nice. Do not under any circumstances rent from these people. They will scam you, take your deposit money, and make you feel awful. They are out to make a buck however they can. I hear the Temple University housing offices (and other schools) have been trying to crack down on their more egregious illegal practices, but they're still awful to deal with. I'd recommend staying away at all costs. Maintenance is bad, units are unreliable, pests are present, and management is totally unresponsive, over fax, email, phone - everything. While nothing has made us happier than the physical apartment that Centra had provided, in the near 4 years we have lived there, the services provided by the people in the Centra office have been nothing short of confusing, nerve-inducing, and plain incorrect. Every time we communicated with this company, there was an issue or miscommunication. I have never seen such disorganization and finger-pointing at a professional business in my life. There was a new person in each position every time we called or emailed, and the new person continuously blamed the last one for the issue. Do you not have a file cabinet? Regardless of "who did it" there is still an issue. You could blame the "confusion" on trying to get more money from us, but that would imply that they had the intelligence to do that. In our lease it stated that, "Landlord agrees to give tenant reasonable notice before entering the leased premise." This was only granted to us on occasion and only when we begged. My roommates and I were mostly young women and having unknown men with our keys entering our apartment without notice on countless occasions (after ALWAYS asking for notice) was concerning to say the least. Their response to this was always "You have to ask for notice." Curious, because it says it in the lease and even more confusing when we would show our proof of exclusive request for notice and they would conveniently stop responding. I want to clarify that the maintenance workers were NEVER inappropriate, they are by far the best workers this company has in my opinion, but if they wanted to be they easily could have due to Centra's negligence. Aside from the workers themselves, we would have major issues with appliances in our apartment and they would only perform bandaid fixes. The wall unit AC provided by Centra was leaking and causing water damage everywhere. They painted over the water damage without repairing it, did not fix the AC, and called it a day. Another time, our washer/dryer kept backing up into our sink and vice versa. (Why? Couldn't tell you. Neither could they). When we requested service for the umpteenth time, they had their regular handyman come (without notice) after he told us that Centra should send a specialist. When he told me he was finished fixing it, I asked what was wrong. He pointed to some pipeage and said "I replaced it." When I asked him why he shrugged and said "I don't know." Laughed, and left. This, of course, did not fix a thing. I still had rice from last nights dinner in my dryer and on my clothes. A critter had once died in the wall by our main entrance and had a putrid smell. When I called to report it I got screamed at by the office worker and hung up on before I even got to finish one sentence. Our entire time in the apartment is clouded by our incredibly frustrating correspondence with the Centra office workers. I could name them, but by the time I post this they will have a new person in their place, blaming the last one for the disorganization. If they weren't thoroughly confused, they were extremely rude. They cause drama and financial rifts with their wildly confusing and inappropriate emails that share financial information to other people without approval. They include and exclude housemates and co-signers in correspondence without justification and then get upset when there is confusion. Our lease began with issues (Centra fighting our co-signer and threatening to give the apartment away over whether his gender-neutral name made him 2 people [I know, I'm still confused too. That's the level of intelligence there]), and ended with issues all the way through our correspondence about the security deposit. I truly cannot think of one time we had contact where there wasn't confusion and disorganization. This is only scratching the surface of the horror stories I have with this company. I could make a standup set about it but I certainly wouldn't be laughing. For lessees of nearly 4 years with minimal issues on our end, we always felt disrespected by this company, and for these reasons, I will never recommend Centra to another person unless they would like a headache and a confused office worker to accuse them of wrong-doing every few months just to straighten it out and not hear from them until the next accusation. The level of service became a running joke with my roommates and I, it was the only way to cope. We basically played rocks, papers, scissors over who would have to contact them. The level of confusion is to the point where you will actually feel crazy. For their sake, I hope they hire long term staff with higher IQ's and the ability to talk to people with basic decency. read more

If it were just Kim, I'd give an even higher rating but this rating is indicative of my holistic experience. Stay away. Have had nothing but bad experiences with maintenance and even the move-in process. The agent who deals with maintenance (Ariel McArdle) is probably the rudest and least helpful person I have ever worked with. When I broke my ankle and the buzzer to get up to my apartment was working, she told me it would get fixed. Three months later, it's not fixed (after several follow ups and her denial that I had called in the first place). That means hobbling on crutches down multiple flights of stairs every time I have a visitor or a delivery. When the cable wall plug was determined by multiple assessors to be defective, she said it is Comcast's issue and refused to look into it further. When I pushed the issue, she called me "rude." We will see what happens with that one - the issue is still pending. When I was trying to get gas changed to my name, she gave me the wrong service address and couldn't figure out the name of the previous tenant - yet made threatening voicemails and emails about not having changed the service despite the fact that I hadn't changed it because she had given me misinformation. Zero apologies. Only attitude. I'm only three months into a one year lease and will bump up my rating if service improves, but as of now, this has been a hellish experience with Centra. Pay the extra 100 dollars a month to have a reasonable landlord. You will regret it otherwise. read more

The properties are poorly maintained. The absolute minimum is done to make these apartments livable. We had leakage and other serious safety issues. The doors were broken. The fire alarm was inferior and had to be disabled to cook. The office personel care only about money. Give them your check and they will leave you alone--really, they will never bother you even if you want them to fix something. Money above all else-zero customer concern or service. We had holes in our ceiling leaking water that weren't properly fixed and continued to provide indoor rain even after being "repaired", we had rent checks they actually lost on multiple occasions, visible mouse drippings on documents in their office (imagine the property maintenance if that was the office) and I even had the pleasure of being walked in on in the shower while they were showing the bathroom of apartment! There has not been a single experience with these people and this apartment that hasnt been entirely terrible. The man who showed me apartments lied about several things, involving maintenance and how long he had worked there, unfortunately I only found this out after signing the papers. You also get barely any warning when it comes to maintenance, fire alarm tests ect. The maintenance is also shady, and if you are a young woman like myself I would not be alone when they come over. Over the summer my AC unit broke, I called and about a week later they showed up and installed a window unit, which blocked the fire escape. After making a mess and leaving wood shavings everywhere from the installation, they promised to come back and fix the actual AC units(both broke). Another week later and a woman emailed me saying they would come the next day. They never showed and I recieved no further correspondence, despite attempting to contact them several times. If that's not enough to convince you to rent from literally anyone else, they were three hours late to delivering my keys on move in day. I did not receive an apology or an explanation, just an envelope with my keys in it. When I finally got to my apartment three hours later than originally planned, the keys did not work. I called maintenance, they came and taught me how to properly jiggle my keys to make the door open. He said they would not replace my keys or the locks because then everyone in the building would need new keys and that takes too much time and money. This is not a safe practice and probably why the mail gets stolen. Centra also must have let a stranger in my apartment, because while I was traveling I recieved an email asking me to confirm that I had been let in to my apartment, with a 125 dollar lock out fee. This person was not me, so they probably dont check ID when letting people into apartments. NO EXCUSE for this kind of behavior. Worst landlords ever. Instead of making simple repairs to maintain properties, they just waste money and raise the rent. They have random inspections on holidays or weekends when you want to sleep, and maintenance staff routinely enter your apartment to use your bathroom or borrow your things. Once I was moving out (after living there for 5 years) a leak developed in the kitchen ceiling from a pipe in the apartment above mine. It destroyed the entire kitchen and it was unusable but I had nowhere else to live and they refused to make repairs before I moved out. Then they blamed me and kept my security deposit illegally and now refuse my phone calls (just like they usually did when I was a tenant). My review is based on the apartment search experience as I did not end up leasing from this company. My first appointment was on a Wednesday at 10am. (I was able to make arrangements to go in late to work (in Delaware) just to see this unit in the city.) The guy shows up and I am scheduled to see a different unit in the building then the one I emailed about and without a 24 hour notice to the tenant in the correct unit, we would have to reschedule. Of course I was disappointed. The communication was verbal (over the phone) and in email so not sure how a landlord or business screws that up since this is their only job. (And PS- I did email the manager to express my concern. I won't mention her name, but she was not empathetic and has no business being the manager of this company. Apartment searching is exhausting and emotional, she was really rude and not helpful at all throughout the whole experience) So regardless, I continue to work with them. My next experience was great! Saw 5-6 units. Wasn't excited about any of them so I continued to look. The next experience I finally get to see the unit I first set out to see and a couple others. The guy who met me was very informative and acted like he actually knew about the business (unlike his manager). So I choose a unit that I'd like to move forward with and asked if they would come down on the price. He said he would get back to me and that he thinks it would be no problem. So a couple of days go by and I don't hear from him. I text him and he says he will call the next day. He doesn't. But, the manager called and I explained the situation. She rudely and almost defensively says "we don't give discounts on rent, we don't negotiate, he had no authority to make you think that, I'm going to have to talk to him". So she basically threw him under the bus and left me sitting there like I was crazy for even asking. So unprofessional I can't even tell you. After this and the first experience I decided to not deal with these people. It's obvious the ONLY thing they are interested in this occupying their units and not WHO. And that's ok. I will never use this leasing company as long as I live in Philly. read more
