The layout is a little interesting- you start at the middle, then head downstairs and then go back upstairs to get seated. Odd but it worked. The only tricky part is parking, make sure to park directly behind the building and not other adjacent lots as those seem to be $$$.

Additionally, it tasks you with one thing each week as your "Artist's Date." That could be anything from rummaging through an estate sale, going to a funky shop by yourself.. basically any new experience. This venture into the tabernacle served as my artist's date for the week. Honestly I was more into exploring downtown Salt Lake than planning to head to the temple grounds, but as I got closer I grew intrigued to see it. I also had someone following me and shouting obscenities, so when I saw the green space here (and security officers and crowds), I thought, sure, why not head that way?! The tabernacle has a presence, for sure. It was quiet, with some people pulling up seats in the pews and just kicking back. There was no live choir, but at one point a recording of choir went off and added a nice ambiance. Someone got up to do an acoustic display; they dropped a pencil without a mic and I could hear it clear as day in the back. The domed roof allows for that, similar to many cathedrals I've been in across Europe. I enjoyed the energy here. I heard lots of Mormons connecting as many had traveled from various cities and continents, and while not Mormon myself, I caught glimpses of their community and belonging that were nice to observe. Sometimes the unplanned discoveries when out and about, or on the artist's date in this case, are some of the more fun elements of day to day living. This one definitely snuck up on me, and I'm grateful for the brief experience.

It's a great theater but surely needs a few updates to keep with the times. The movie screen was sharp and clear, no interferences. Just wish it was a bit more comfortable for me while i was sitting. :/

The wood reminds me of Lincoln Center (but I'm not too fond of the gold hue). We were on our way to FamilySearch, but when passing by the symphony hall, we found a Mozart concert! And they still have tickets. Lucky me. The program: 1. Mozart, Symphony #35 2. Saint-Saëns, piano concerto #2, with Alessio Bax (1977-, Bari, Italy) 3. Bartók, concerto for orchestra Conductor Christoph Koncz (1987-, Konstanz, West Germany) gave a briefing on the background, which is excellent. The latecomers are let in during the piece that is being played. Errrhhhh... I thoroughly enjoy Saint-Saëns' piano concerto; the pianist received a prolonged standing ovation. The thundering enthusiasm is rewarded with an encore: he plays with his left hand only. Couldn't remember the name of the piece. The third piece is bit too hard, so we left.

This was my first time at a concert at the Maverick Center and their acoustics are not as good as other indoor arenas I have been to. I don't know if it was the band or just the way the sound is set up in the building. There was so much base that it made it really difficult to hear the singing. The venue is decent. I would come back if there is a band I'm interested in seeing.

It felt more intimate than a huge stadium, and I loved that it was close to our hotel. The area around it was cute too, and there's a whole floor inside with different stadium-style food options. A couple things to know before going...it gets REALLY hot inside. I was sweating like I was in hot yoga even while drinking plenty of cold water. I really wish there had been better air circulation, especially with a packed crowd. Also, we grabbed tacos from one of the concession stands and unfortunately they were cold, including the meat, which was disappointing. The biggest issue was actually leaving the venue. Getting in was easy, but getting out was a completely different story. It took somewhere around 1 1/2-2 hours before traffic was properly coordinated and we could finally get moving. It seemed like the surrounding streets may have needed to be blocked off or better managed to help everyone leave. Hopefully that's something they can improve for future events. Aside from those things, we had an amazing time. Olivia Dean was incredible, and the Utah crowd was honestly one of my favorite parts. Everyone was singing, dancing, and completely immersed in the concert. Utah, I love you guys! You were such a beautiful audience to experience this with.

November 11, I saw Jay Leno (free tix, forced by my wife:), the next night, I saw Morrissey (my much-wanted birthday present). So, yeah, the Live! At the Eccles series has something for everyone. It's interesting ... I've sat in different areas: Tier 3, Tier 2, and four rows from the front in Tier 1. I've never felt too far away. Also, you can hear the music well anywhere in the house: Everybody's ears were ringing (including me) near the back of the epic Morrissey concert, but up front for Bob Dylan, it was a little more forgiving on the ears. And stand up comedy? Yes, it's perfect for that. The Live! Series seems more to the over-50 crowd. While this means some stand-up comedy (Leno, Tim Allen, John Cleese) and old-timer bands like Huey Lewis & The News, but also cool legends like Morrissey, Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples, and Ani DiFranco. A few months back, I saw U2 in Twickenham Stadium in the UK. Like most concerts, there's mess, belligerent drunks, bathroom lines (even for the dudes), and it takes forever to get home. These sort of arena concert problems won't be found at the Eccles Theater. The vibe at the Eccles is a little more Theatre-like: A five-story "Grand" lobby, terrazzo art flooring, baluster and glass for miles, lounges, indoor and outdoor seating, a cafe area, and suited ushers at every door. That doesn't mean the crowds can't get raucous: Morrissey had a mosh pit and the usual fanatics who jump onstage to meet the legend. The seats are a bit butt-numbing. I didn't notice at Morrissey or Bob Dylan, as we were standing a lot. I couldn't feel my backside after the first half-hour of Jay Leno. Also, the attendants are a bit too authoritarian. They were VERY distracting at Bob Dylan trying to stop people from filming the concert. Still, long story short, it's a great series with a diversity of artists every year.
