I wanted to do some hiking that afternoon to take advantage of the crisp, sunny fall weather, and I found this site on Tripadvisor. We didn't really know much about it but when we got here we were totally fascinated! There are nearly 200 ovens, some in much better condition than others, but to explore them was so interesting. As you leave the parking lot and approach the main section of ovens, you cross a little bridge and going right, you will be walking down a long path lined on both sides with ovens with a huge ditch in the middle. If you go left, you will walk by about a dozen ovens as the path curves around and turns into a gravel trail. If you follow the trail "behind" the ovens, on your left just about 50 yards away is a beautifully paved hiking path. We went over there and hiked several miles in one direction before turning back. Part of the path we hiked seemed to get slightly near some homes, but you couldn't really see them much. The walk was so, so beautiful with the leaves falling and the water in the creek next to the path running - you couldn't have created a better fall day. We so enjoyed this stop, it was a great outdoor experience and just set a great mood for our weekend. Absolutely check this place out!

Trail markers , paved trails, even a bi monthly quaterly magazine, listing all sorts of events. This was my first visit to an Ohio park to explore, and will defintly check out other locations in the near future. The vistor center staff were friendly ; the center itself was marvelous with variety of things to explore,the tree exhibit, the bird feeding area, kids area , turtles and the akorn gift shop. The gift shop shaped in a Maple leaf, in my opinion was genuis , simple addition to center for kids and nature lovers. Fall will be approaching soon; be sure to hike and enjoy the beauty of nature with exercise and fresh air.

If you live in Pittsburgh or are just visiting the area, McConnells Mill is one of the best day…read moretrips around. It's only about 40 miles north up I-79, so it's an easy drive from the city, but it feels like a completely different world once you get down into the gorge. I've been going there for years with friends and family, and it became my go-to spot to take people when they would visit from out of town. Everyone always loves checking out the historic old gristmill and the red covered bridge right next to it. It's a great, classic view, and if you go during the summer, they usually open up the mill for tours so you can see how it all used to work. The hiking there is fantastic, too, with a good mix of trails depending on what you're up for. You can take a pretty easy walk back to Hell's Hollow Falls, or you can tackle the rougher, rockier trails that run right along Slippery Rock Creek. You definitely want to wear sturdy shoes because the terrain gets steep and the rocks get slick, but the scenery with the rushing whitewater and massive boulders is totally worth it. It's just a beautiful, simple place to get outdoors for a few hours. Whether you want a challenging hike or just want to sit by the water and look at the old bridge, it never disappoints.

Visited this state park for the first time earlier this month and had a blast!…read more I parked at what I think is the main lot, up above the mill itself. I didn't take a tour of the mill (which the park volunteers and staff do offer throughout the day) but I did walk through it and read the information in it about the history of the mill. Definitely enjoyed exploring and learning. That said, I was really there for the trails, so I spent most of my day hiking. I took a loop trail down from the mill and back (with a detour up a short trail to some falls) and it was great! I love being outside and I love a good challenge; these trails were not paved or even at all and I had a great workout navigating them. During hydration breaks I'd find a nice rock to sit on by the water, which was wonderful. It was noisy as heck by the mill because of the families, but the further out I got the more peaceful it got. Definitely met my goal of unplugging for a day during my trek on the trails. I want to come back in the future and begin to try to walk the Slippery Gorge Trail, as it sounds like the gorge is another beautiful part of the park. But that is definitely a long term goal, because that trail is not a short one! I loved visiting this park and I'd be back for sure. To everyone else, PLEASE remember water and wear the proper footwear - while I enjoyed my walk in the park, these trails are definitely not a walk in the park!

We stayed at Guilford Lake State Park Campground and really enjoyed it. It's a small, peaceful, and…read morevery clean campground with great shade and a friendly atmosphere. Even though the lake is currently drained for dam maintenance until 2027, the campground itself is still a solid place to stay. The bathrooms and showers were super clean, which we appreciated. The only funny/odd part was that you need a passcode to get in, which made us feel like we were entering a secret bunker. Water pressure was okay, and the hot water did come on--it just took a minute. The campground has a basketball hoop court, an outdoor dish‑washing sink, and plenty of space to walk around. Even without the lake, it's a relaxing spot with good amenities. We met several friendly campers, including a little girl who petted our dog Cooper and told us she had a cousin named Cooper. When we asked if he was as cute as our Cooper, she said, "Um... he's a human, not a dog," which made our day. We offered her a Camping With Cooper sticker, and she replied, "I can't, my damn parents are coming by," which made our day even more. One note for fellow campers: we were next to a site with two very vocal dogs who barked at everything that moved. Not every camper has dogs or wants to hear them nonstop, so hopefully their owners work on that. Otherwise, the campground was quiet and enjoyable. We're giving it 4 stars for now, only because the lake is currently gone. Once the water returns in 2027, this will easily be a 5‑star hidden gem in Ohio, and we absolutely plan to come back.
