I tried in 8th grade to get her tested for dyslexia but was pushed off until school ended. Then tried at Liberty high to get her tested where again was pushed off until school ended. Now at only 2 weeks of the start of school year, Frontier high school has already been working on getting her tested. They have welcomed my child with opened arms & truly made us feel at ease. They made us feel heard & are moving quickly to get her the tools she needs to succeed. Everyone gave us a warm welcome. They are not mask Nazi's either for those who cant wear a mask. They dont hound you about, make you feel bad or treat you like a 2nd class citizen.

They recently installed new solar panels and upgraded the classrooms. The staff in the office was always helpful and cheerful when I called in with any questions or to clear absences. The school participates in many voluntary extracurricular activities and competitions like History Day and Robotics; both of these programs have a possibility of moving on to statewide or nationwide competitions! The teachers involved in the extracurriculars are very encouraging and will go above and beyond to make sure the students have the tools they need to succeed in their chosen programs. The teachers at FJH made my daughters time here enjoyable. Special recognition to Norian, Kolb, Escobar, and Chafin for being especially helpful and encouraging. I think Fruitvale is a great school and really care about the kids! (I am knocking a star because we had a lot of issues with the bus driver giving our child problems - primarily because her morning and afternoon stops were different because of my work schedule and he didn't want her getting on and off at different places)

That being said, this school is exactly what we were hoping for with our youngest. It isn't snobby or snooty. Good, hard working, normal folks bring their kids here and it doesn't feel like a country club mom clique (IYKYK). The class sizes are very small. The teachers really know your kid and hold your kid accountable. We needed something in between homeschool and public school (we tried both), and this is it for us. I feel like everyone at this school loves her, but they also don't let her get away with any shenanigans either. It's stricter than public school and for that I am so grateful. I am able to be in as much contact as I want or need with the teachers and the administrators. They do fun things (they have a junior high dance, some sports like volleyball, basketball, football) and go to Hume Lake for example. They have chapel every Friday and parents are invited to come...it's lovely. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the teachers and the staff. On top of that I love that she studies the Bible and is growing spiritually here as well. I also was shocked at how reasonable the tuition is here compared to pretty much most of the other private schools in town. The academic level is pretty rigorous - definitely beyond private school level. But with smaller class sizes there is more attention given to each kid. It's small, cozy, welcoming and we are very happy with it.

Anyway, through research from a Facebook group for Bakersfield moms, I found out about Project:Learn (PL) which has a twice a week face-to-face option for students to meet up in a campus and together, do activities for Math, Science, History, and my favorite, PBL which is short for Project Based Learning. In PBL, they had a Kindness Project last year and also basic accounting and budget-planning. On days that they are not in school, they have school work that they do at home, all linked to an online guide (and answer keys!), which us parents get to check and grade. I thought it was going to be a difficult transition for us but Kate, the founder of PL, answered all my questions and has been a very good resource especially when I was still deciding on a program. Class size is small, which I personally liked, and my daughter has established genuine friendships in her class and looks forward seeing her classmates/friends every week!

I feel like they take a genuine interest in each child. My daughter always felt safe and loved here and that's what is most important to me. I like that she also gets reinforced Christian values and at the same time this school is very accepting without judgment. It's so hard to entrust people with your children in today's world.
