We made a reservation for a 1.5 hour vineyard and winery tour. Getting to the winery, as well as other wineries in this region was tough, because of the winding and bumpy roads. As we drove by a condemned house, we were wondering if we were going the right way. Up ahead, we approach a gate, which is the entrance to Clos Mogador, where we were let in by our guide. While at first 1.5 hrs might seem long, time flew by. The tour was informative, engaging, fun, and you pretty much learn everything there is to know about Priorat. Our guide, Josep is extremely knowledgable and nice. He drove us in Clos Mogador's own van and gave us the best wine tour we have ever experienced. During the drive, Josep points out different plants and herbs and had us smell/taste them. These flavor characteristics are what you taste in the wines, as they reflect the notes of the terroir. Priorat is also known for its olive oil and almond production, so naturally Josep points out olive and almond trees to us and even cracks open a few almonds from an almond tree for us to taste. Back at the winery, the wine making and tasting parts of the tour continues. During the wine tasting portion, Josep prepares some cheese, guava jam, and bread for us to have with the wines. And we got to taste the Clos Mogador olive oil! Just like its wines, Clos Mogador's olive oil is incredible and worth the buy. Clos Mogador's wines are truly sophisticated and well made. Keep in mind, due to the climate, the small scale production as well as the human labor that goes into making these great wines, Priorat wines in general aren't going to be cheap. Nonetheless, Clos Mogador wines are very reasonably priced, and a great buy.
