We have had nothing but great experiences at this little shop! Charlene always has a variety of wine tastings from new winemakers that has been fun for us to try over the past few years (at a reasonable price!). She offered a selection of cheese and charcuterie to BYO cheese board. This is nice if you want to come in and cork a bottle or want to snack while you attend a tasting. We recently had a private birthday party here for my mom and sister. They allowed us to bring in our own food, and they did a wine tasting experience for each guest. We started with a nice and light rose and worked our way up to a bold cab. Every guest got to go at their own pace, and she was patient enough to re-explain each tasting the different guests wanted. Cellar 406 is a lovely wine shop. Charlene is a certified sommelier, and is therefore knowledgable about wines across a wide variety of regions, grapes and cultures. She carries only the best quality varietals, cares about ethical sourcing, and there is something for everyone with regard to both price point and personal taste. She keeps her business clean, safe, welcoming, and relaxing. Her staff, Marinda, Alyssa, and Elena, are also highly knowledgeable, professional, and considerate. They are always willing to lend a helping hand and share their vast knowledge of wines. She keeps a wonderful menu that features meats and cheeses, and someone is always present to help you decide what best pairs with the food of your choice. The wine tastings at 406 are fantastic, and she often brings representatives from wineries (domestic and international) to educate attendees. I also love that she periodically hosts a trivia night. I highly recommend the wine club. We have been members for years, have never had a problem with billing, and the wines she chooses are always fantastic. I appreciate that they are in sync with the seasons, holidays, and special occasions. So I was waiting for a Pizza to be ready from an order I placed in the same strip mall at Lou Malnati's. I had 35 minutes to dispatch, so I walked the length of the strip mall. I arrived at the end and hooked a right and took one look from the outside and thought "lemme see here." So I walked in and the lady of the place smiles, approaches, and asks me if I need help and proceeds to give me a basic layout of what wines are where (i.e. whites here, reds there, higher dollar wines here, etc.). I know humans make mistakes = me going to Binny's. But those are big-box stores and, quite honestly, just sell alcohol in massive quantities. But Cellar 406 is old school in customer service; this could not be a more complimentary comment. I loved the personal attention from the lady there. You can tell she is listening to what you say as you look into her eyes, she is thinking, and taking it all in before she recommends something to you = a real professional. I can tell she is smart and has that emotional intelligence/connection with customers. I told her the toppings ordered on my pizza and she took me to several wines and let me peruse the wine stacks. I'm not giving 100% of my alcohol money to Binny's anymore; Cellar406 deserves it. The business is tucked away on the side of the strip mall, so keep looking on the side for it. I also walked out with a list of restaurants in need to try. FORGET GOOGLE! Ask people in your real life interactions about food, then write about it on Yelp. While this business does not always have an open bottle for you to sample, i understand this as it is a small business. There are also some beers and other items in the cooler there. There are places to sit and they are kind if you want to bring food it; but i would ask them to make sure it is o.k. Fine people, fine atmosphere. Whenever I am near I will be rolling in here for a kind smile and word, and a fine bottle of wine to take home or enjoy with friends in this cozy atmosphere. Thank God for simple finery. This is a little gem outside of Chicago. Come here and enjoy living! Fine people. read more
