If I could give negative stars, I would. I've booked multiple trips on this boat & they all got canceled with very little notice. The have poor management & organizational skills. CeeRay is a great vessel with a very reliable crew. They know all the great dive spots, and they will make you feel right at home. I dove the CeeRay twice, once in 2001 and again in 2013 and let me tell you that this vessel has weathered the storm! Both dives were through sport chalet charters, but I believe the owners are always looking for more private charters. If you get some friends together, you could charter the boat for a day, and sell the surplus spots to a local dive club or something! The food is great, the ships cook is a local chef and amount of delicious food he can whip up in a galley the size of a phone booth is absolutely astounding. Last trip they had pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, orange juice, coffee, soda, fresh fruit, chips and salsa, salad, mashed potatoes, vegetables, barbecue chicken, monkey bread, ice cream, brownies, and sugar cookies. This was NOT cafeteria food, it was well seasoned, well prepared, and quite original. Everything was included, and I believe alcohol is available for sale. I recommend going to San Clemente Island if you get the chance. It is an overnight trip (about twice as far as catalina), but it's well worth it. The ship has bunks below deck, and they are plenty cozy so you will sleep fine. There is lots of room on deck at the bow and stern, and a nice sun deck up top. It's a great place to catch some zz's after a dive. Parking is easy, and loading/unloading is not an issue. The crew is super friendly and will help you carry your gear if you desire. I've know Captain Mike and Kim for almost 20 yrs and I've always had a very good and fun relationship with them. Because of this, I've done business with them for most of that time. I own a dive business in SoCal and to be quite honest, I've had very few issues with this operation. The crew is above par and safety is their primary concern. Unlike another operation, they do diver check-ins after every dive and they have never left anyone at sea. Food has never been bad. Kim plans above average meals for their customers. Again remember it's dive food and divers are hungry and picky. The dive sites are always descent. If conditions change the crew will move the boat to a more enjoyable location. There are many dive boat operators in SoCal, I would venture to say the crew of the CeeRay is one of the best. read more

AMAZING crew, great plentiful food, solid boat overall. The crew: I dove from CeeRay while doing my Rescue Diver cert. I was super anxious, as my instructors had told me that "emergencies" were going to pop up throughout the day and I would have to handle them. Every member of the crew-- Capt Mike, the DM, and especially Mikey and Jensen-- was super helpful. I had a million questions and they all took time to answer them thoroughly, even though I know there is always work to be done. They also gave me valuable feedback when I asked for their assessment of me (not their job) after a skill. Aside from my training, they were very helpful with all the divers as they got geared up, and were safe and thorough in all of their practices. The food: Great food, and plentiful! I get seasick, and while I was on meds, I also need to keep a full stomach to keep it settled. Kim ALWAYS had food available. We had breakfast, and then between every dive was either a snack or another meal. Great variety of food available, and beverages as well. Misc: Prep area was a little tight-- gear spots where not spread apart enough for adjacent divers to be getting ready at the same time. Not a dealbreaker - or even worth removing a star - but worth a mention. The boat was very clean, the heads were clean, and the hot water for showers was plentiful. The bunk areas were great, and you can stay the night on the boat the night before if you want to avoid a crack-of-dawn wakeup and drive. read more

Very good boat. Chill without being slackers. Had a great day. Solid lp fills. Good food. Nice bunks with curtains and good ventilation. Bring a light of some kind. They need a new dive flag. They have a good system for cups and mugs that does not waste. They are the masters of pvc pipe but it seems to work. They handle a minor non dive health issue effectively yet with out drama. read more

Update: Trip of Nov. 22, 2015 was great. Crew was caring and competent. We hours of laughing together. Outstanding crew with a very welcoming attitude. They went way out their way to be helpful to the divers. Divers were never rushed, like on some boats. The boat was clean and in good order. Fills were very prompt. Bunk was cozy, especially because I got smart and brought my little headlamp so I could snuggle up with my book at night and after diving. One tank fell down and broke the 2nd stage, snapped it right off. Divemaster lent a new second stage and fixed it immediately. Saved a day of diving for a guy. Not every crew would do that. Pretty cool. Very good food, that's important. Hats are off to Captain Kim for her culinary efforts. Very much appreciated. Only one little drawback: The boat is a little crowded at full capacity. Of course this is no longer the case once people are in the water. On balance, an outstanding bargain for a day or more of diving. I will be back. read more

I had the pleasure of diving the CeeRay yesterday, Sept 3, 2017. Long story short, fabulous trip! Short story long: Captain Mike put us on two reefs at the West End of Catalina, Johnson's Rock & Black Rock. Even with all of the holiday boat traffic, he was able to find two beautiful dive sites with tons of Giant Kelp and an abundance of sea life! Aboard the boat, Jenson & Mikey (the two DM's) went above and beyond. Jenson's boat and dive briefings were clear, concise and professional. There where divers from advanced (decades of diving) to one who was getting his open water cert that day, and Jenson's briefings were clear enough for the newest diver to understand and feel comfortable, while brief enough not to lose the attention of seasoned vets. Mikey's air fills were generous, bottom times for me were over 60 minutes for all three dives! The boat was kept clean throughout the day, the hot water for showers at the end of the day, accommodated all 20 something divers and then some! And the FOOD! Captain Kim, chef, DM & backup Captain for Mike, provided enough food to keep everyone satisfied. Her banana pancakes were on point, scrambled eggs were fluffy and flavorful, sausage, bagels, toast, and that was just breakfast! An after 1st dive snack of Monkey Breast (imagine cinnamon pull-apparts dropping with ooey gooey goodness, along with salty favorites of peanuts, pretzels & cheese-nips. Lunch was a huge fresh salad & meatball sandwiches and the sweetest watermelon I've had in years; she even catered to those on board who were gluten free, making special homemade gluten-free meatballs, in addition to the regular. Snacks after the second dive included fresh cut veggies and salty snacks. She even made FRESH BREWED ICED TEA! and a flavored water with slices of cucumber, blueberries, and I think mint! So wonderful for those of us who don't like soda. (Which they have several flavors of). The bunks for the nap out to the island and the trip back, were clean and comfortable. The bunk rooms were a bit warm, but that's only because the temperature outside was so warm. They do provide fans at the front of the bunks to circulate air throughout. I've spent a lot of time on dive boats, and the CEERAY has to be my favorite. The boat is clean, the crew is friendly, helpful and happy to be there, the food is top notch, (oh yeah, did I mention that Capt Kim is a culinary school graduate and owns her own catering business) and the dive spots are amazing! I HIGHLY recommend the CeeRay Dive Boat for single day and multi-day dive trips! read more

I've been on the CeeRay at least three times for diving Catalina and every outting has been a wonderful experience. The atmosphere aboard is great. The crew is extremely helpful and friendly. The air refills are very capable and quick. Delicious meals/deserts cooked onboard. I love diving from this boat xD. The boat does roll around a bit, so if you're prone to motion-sickness like I am, make sure to take an antiemetic. read more

Top notch SCUBA operation. I love the Sand Dollar and Bottom Scratcher as well, but this was my first time on the CeeRay. Things that were better than other good dive boats: Lots of space. Even though it's still a pain to move past someone and you will say "Pardon me" and "Sorry.. coming through" and "Scuse me!" a million times which is normal. You can say that while still being able to get by a group having their conversation in the galley, or on deck. Lots of bunks. I am a weenie these days and brought my own pillow case, but the bunks were plentiful and comfy although don't be surprised if you see stains etc on the mattress pad. Pillow and blanket provided were comfy and I slept about an hour both ways to Catalina. (I may be weird.. but I sleep well on boats) The business of getting in and out of the water. (*important!) The Cee Ray doesn't bottleneck you getting in and out of the water. You can jump in on both sides of the boat. Getting back aboard is as easy as it gets as they have a massive swim-on step on the back that's submerged about a foot usually and you can count on a crewmember always being on that step to help you with fins and ladder etc. Food: Ok today was amazingly good food but I would say it was one star less than the scratcher and sand dollar. The reason? one meal less. Food was just as good (SCUBA food is gooooooooood.) but I always had breakfast with eggs/bacon/sausage etc on boats, then a meal when first dive was over.. usually spaghetti with meatballs/garlic bread etc.. and a dinner after that. This trip just had one which was a good Adobo chicken/noodle/rice meal which was so good. Today the CeeRay substituted that third meal with an excellent bananas foster/ice cream desert which was amazing. No complaints on the food, but it should be noted that other boats do seem to always have a meal available. It's a minor thing but after a long day of diving, I like to have a beer or two but they were out! I use this as a not-so-subtle way of tipping usually because dropping $15-20 bucks on a few beers is a good way to end the day and increase the owners profit for the trip. Again.. they were out of beer! Crew was ALWAYS top notch courteous, friendly, helpful. My buddy had a catastrophic gear failure at the beginning of the first dive and one of the crew presented him with HIS reg/BC to use for the day. I have never seen that unless a boat has extras lying around.. this guy didn't dive that day because he gave up his personal gear. Very Very VERY cool. Thanks guys for a great day of diving at little Geiger and Lulu reef! I have never seem so many hundreds of lobster at one time. Amazing.. filled every crack in the rocks. Oh I forgot something! One of my 3 dive buddies is a real air hog and has a HP steel 100cf tank. This boat has a bit of a reputation for "light fills" around 2700 psi. For me with a LP steel 85 this boat is perfect. One of my dive buddies prefilled tank ended with the group at 1200psi+ on the first dive, but with the lighter fill --I-- ended the subsequent dives at 1200 PSI while the HP100 steel tank was at 500. This might not be the boat for you if you have a high pressure tank and need 3200-3300 air filled hp tanks. Everything else: GREAT! read more

This was my first time on the Cee Ray and I had a great time, the crew was great and extremely accommodating. The boat is an older one but I found it to be very comfortable and the food was very good. I plan to dive with them again and would definitely recommend that you give them a try. read more
