CeeRay is a great vessel with a very reliable crew. They know all the great dive spots, and they will make you feel right at home. I dove the CeeRay twice, once in 2001 and again in 2013 and let me tell you that this vessel has weathered the storm! Both dives were through sport chalet charters, but I believe the owners are always looking for more private charters. If you get some friends together, you could charter the boat for a day, and sell the surplus spots to a local dive club or something! The food is great, the ships cook is a local chef and amount of delicious food he can whip up in a galley the size of a phone booth is absolutely astounding. Last trip they had pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, orange juice, coffee, soda, fresh fruit, chips and salsa, salad, mashed potatoes, vegetables, barbecue chicken, monkey bread, ice cream, brownies, and sugar cookies. This was NOT cafeteria food, it was well seasoned, well prepared, and quite original. Everything was included, and I believe alcohol is available for sale. I recommend going to San Clemente Island if you get the chance. It is an overnight trip (about twice as far as catalina), but it's well worth it. The ship has bunks below deck, and they are plenty cozy so you will sleep fine. There is lots of room on deck at the bow and stern, and a nice sun deck up top. It's a great place to catch some zz's after a dive. Parking is easy, and loading/unloading is not an issue. The crew is super friendly and will help you carry your gear if you desire. Don't forget to tip!

Very good boat. Chill without being slackers. Had a great day. Solid lp fills. Good food. Nice bunks with curtains and good ventilation. Bring a light of some kind. They need a new dive flag. They have a good system for cups and mugs that does not waste. They are the masters of pvc pipe but it seems to work. They handle a minor non dive health issue effectively yet with out drama.

Unfortunately the patch, zofran, Dramamine, and even Sudafed didn't help, which was a really drag. Nonetheless the drop off and boarding were extremely easy. They delivered our luggage within a few hours of boarding. Our Stateroom 8th Floor and center of the ship was small but we had lots of storage, king size bed, and balcony. Only one plug with two extra usb ports, however there is a second plug for the TV and if you're like me and don't watch it just unplug it for extra electronics. Everyone on board (employees) were extremely happy and always offered a good morning or good evening comment when you passed by. Lots of different entertainment from concerts to comedy shows they definitely kept you busy. The food situation was hit or miss. Guys burgers are fantastic but some of the other places not so good it just depends on what you like they definitely have allot to choose from. Our first destination was Cabo San Lucas which aside from the beach was absolutely terrible. Town was very trashy with not many choices for restaurants or shopping, and Ensenada wasn't much different just a sad place with the same shops. Two places I hope to never visit again. The ship offers so much more!

That means if you order a specialty code you can't also have a water for yourself at the same time.. you have to wait 10 minutes. Fresh juices are not included in the nonalcoholic beverage plan. Also their WiFi has major limitations. I couldn't get any SMS messages. No phone calls unless it was through WiFi of course. Plus a lot of folks don't remember to put their phone on airplane mode and get hit with extra charges for unintentionally using a normal feature of their phone. Food on the Radiance was better at the buffet than the dining room during breakfast. Most of my food was extremely dry. Dinner was better but they sure had a funny interpretation of "medium rare" my prime rib was barely cooked except for the outside edge.

As it was a convention, there were a lot of informational brochures and swag to be had. And the gear- wow! I didn't buy any major pieces of kit, just accessories but it totaled over $300! It took an event like this to make me realize that I've been diving for quite a while now (8 years & 855 dives). Out of the 10 international dive trips I've been on, 8 of the resorts/liveaboards had an exhibit here, and the other 2 destinations had neighboring resorts with exhibits here. The free seminars have actually been useful with more underwater photography and safety related sessions lately. Overall good for new and returning divers alike.

After 9 hours of classroom and 9 hours of private pool lessons at Sports Chalet, it was time for the boat dive. Three boat dives to be precise. We got hooked up with the Magician to take us to Catalina for our first open water dives. We were grouped with 2 or 3 other classes on this boat. 28 divers and a crew of about 8. We pulled in at 5:30am and took off at 7am. The layout was like other fishing charters I have been on. The crew was terrific, all friendly, experienced and willing to help us newbies. All you could eat hot breakfast, unlimited drinks, fajita burrito lunch, cake and ice-cream. We got to Rippers Cove for our first two dives then, during lunch, we moved on to Lulu's Cove. My son and I dove with one of our instructors. We had a great experience, saw tons of critters in the kelp forest and made some new friends. We got back to the dock at about 4:30. An awesome way to spend a Sunday. One more beach dive in Laguna and we are certified open water divers. I highly recommend this outfit for your day boat diving.

Anyhow, dive day comes round I arrive to find The Magician in bad shape, very dated and in need of some refurbishment and suffering from severe rust on the bow. There are also 22 people crammed onboard. When it was time to dive we were told aggressively that there was only 20 minutes to get in the water, yet due to the cramped conditions (and a lot of new divers) it's impossible to gear up. You have to wait for other divers to get ready which takes an absolute age. The crew then gets agitated when the reality is they've clearly overbooked the trip versus the time constraints. Critically, when they give the dive briefing the dive masters just point and say 'you can dive somewhere over there or around there or maybe there' and do not guide the dives or even get into the water. You are not anchored at the dive site either. You are expected to swim to a dive site they simply half heartedly gesture at and seem unsure about. To my absolute horror the majority of the divers on the boat had a single digit number of dives under their belt and were expected to dive without any guidance. Yes, they're certified but it's dangerous to have new divers out without an experienced guide, especially as this area witnesses strong currents, poor visibility, kelp that can entangle, boating and kayak traffic and low temperatures. As a solo diver I was buddied up with a much older gentleman who had only 8 certified dives. You then become responsible for a new diver's safety without knowing the area, depth and currents due to the fact no staff members enter the water. I've never seen such behaviour globally. It's absolutely shocking. I witnessed 5 divers get into severe difficulties and get swept away by the currents, even out of sight, who then spent the best part of an hour trying to battle their way to the boat, without any assistance whatsoever from the staff apart from being yelled at via a megaphone. My dive buddy suffered from fatigue early in the first dive and we had to abandon and I pulled him to the boat. We did not dive for the rest of the day because we did not feel safe. The skipper and the staff member who is of short stature with a gap in his teeth were informed about the other struggling divers (they were inside talking and had to be notified) and I heard the skipper say "shall we leave them there?" without any kind of humorous tone. The attitude of these two people was truly abhorrent with all manner of things said when they thought no one was in ear shot and some comments about guests I daren't repeat. The staff even later told someone (I overheard the conversation) that on a previous trip, almost all of their divers got swept out by a current in the same location and that a competitor's dive boat had to rescue three of their divers. They seemed almost proud of this and said 'you could see the current coming in to take them out'. I have serious concerns that there will be a very preventable and tragic fatality with this outfit due to their negligence and a total lack of supervision. They have no idea which divers are where or where they plan to surface and when someone eventually disappears, they will have no idea where to even start looking.
