Nicolas David from the Voice has played here numerous times...and this tavern consistently draws acts from the Twin Cities. The best part of the whole deal is that I have never been charged a cover to get in and see good music. Sometimes, during shows, they serve free beer in the back from a keg...most likely PBR. Free music, and free beer? Is this heaven? Looking around the bar, enjoy the years and years of graffiti on the walls in the back of the bar. There are some really great artists in this town...and some fancy poets. The bathrooms are so full of markered writing, you could stand in there for a number of minutes just to take it in. I was impressed with the selection of crappy and not-so-crappy beer, and the service was great. The sound from the stage was great, and there was a little area where people would dance. I found the people watching here to be second to none...such an eclectic mix of society in here.

We had so much fun at the Saturday night dinner, talking and enjoying delicious homemade wine and food. The owners are knowledgeable about what they are making, where it is coming from, and the way they grow and prepare the majority of the food they make! My only real caution is to say that WHEN you stay here, "(because you should!) do your best to drive up during the day. The B&B is a bit remote for this Chicago gal, and the roads at night are dark and twisty. We are looking forward to coming back!

Retired to our room (Shepherd's Loft) with a very tasty bottle of wine, complimentary treats, and a movie. Our room was perfect for us, the smallest one I think, but plenty of room and a very nice bathroom. Even though the part of the house was built in the 20's, everything seemed new. Got wifi in our room. The bed and linens were super comfy. Breakfast was at a not-too-early 9:00am and was delicious. I was glad I didn't make lunch plans, we were barely hungry by dinner time. We got a fun little tour of the winery operations downstairs by Chris. We couldn't get the sheep or donkeys to come to the fence to be pet, but they are friendly. Sadly we had to head onto the next leg of our trip, otherwise we would have done some of the trails. Sherry and Chris were really nice, personable, and funny. We absolutely loved our short stay and plan to come back next year. After its start 15 years ago, Great River Shakespeare Festival still delivers! Admittedly, I…read moredoubted that the festival and company would survive, as I doubted the community's commitment to the Bard year after year. But, quality begets loyalty and there is no limit on the quality theater provided by GRSF each year! This year I caught Venus in Fur, a black box production not written by Shakespeare but with many elements that Shakespeare often employed (mythology, a play within a play, mistaken identity, etc). It also covered themes exceptionally apropos of current events - gender roles, sexual harassment, the male gaze, power, sexuality. A brilliantly written play, performed excellently by the two leads. With material as heavy as Venus in Fur, I can imagine a poorly acted and directed version would be painful to watch. This production certainly had moments where the audience cringed with discomfort, but we were meant to. In addition to providing an extremely enjoyable evening, the play left myself and my parents contemplating and thinking on it for days. The other productions I've seen over the years have always impressed me - I always wonder, how is this amazing company in Winona and not a larger, more metropolitan location?! Winona is super lucky to have the GRSF, and I hope to continue to catch them for years to come when I'm in town in the summer.

This year are 2 true Shakespeare shows on the main stage and Shakespeare in Love (adapted from the movie). This is a small one-room museum on Main Street, which opened in Nov. 2020. (Don't go to the address…read moreon West Street unless you're planning to do research in the archives.) $5 is a bit steep, though perhaps I was spoiled by an excellent museum I'd visited earlier today for the same price. There is a collection of buttons from Oktoberfest, with two costumes from the 1960s; a small but interesting exhibit on the Ho-Chunk (Hoocak), which focused on arts and crafts; some artifacts from the War Eagle shipwreck (the only underwater location on the National Register of Historic Places that I'm aware of), and a few other odds and ends, including an exhibit on "pearl" buttons made from shells, a "combination" a lady would wear under her corset (they were made locally), and a few Hmong items, including a beautiful detailed aluminum necklace. I didn't really come away feeling I'd learned about the history of La Crosse, but this certainly painted in some details.
