Redwood City Public Library - Schaberg Branch - Packed storytime on Saturdays

Redwood City Public Library - Schaberg Branch

Half of the library is dedicated to kids so there are a ton of kids and some young adult books. There is a decent selection of fiction and non fiction here, more than I was expecting for such a small branch library. I did find some interesting books and I was able to use the self checkout with no issues since I already had a Redwood City library card. They also had a small selection of newspapers and magazines as well!

The rest are all weekday mornings and probably geared towards the stay-at-home-mom crowd. The location is also local for us so we walk here when the weather is good. It's in the middle of a residential neighborhood (West Roosevelt) and near a few businesses (a shopping center with one of our favorite Sushi places, Oh Baby Sushi, a mediocre Rite Aid and Key Market, a neighborhood grocery store that has very good bbq tri-tip sandwiches on the weekends). Parking is usually not a problem, even if you have to walk a little from parking near houses. Compared to the congested nightmare that is downtown, the parking situation here is easy peasy and best of all, free. Overall, the library is decent but small, as expected with a branch building. That said, there's a pretty big baby / kids section with tons of picture books on display and pretty good selections. The storytime lasts until the kids are tired of listening and they go through lots of books in one sitting. There is also a reading program here that logs books read (storytime readings count) and you get incentives for # of books read, such as meals at local businesses like the Old Spaghetti Factory. The downside to having a big children's section is loud children running around if you're trying to get quiet work done. Young adult novels are also plenty. If you have kids this would be a good place to bring them to kill some time and get hooked on reading. Adult / regular bookshelves are less plentiful here so if that's what you're looking for, you're better off at the downtown library or at the San Mateo city library -- both are huge in comparison and have way more seating / workspace.

In these modern times you would have thought that Libraries would be a bit of an anachronism. Books…read moreseem so dated these days that the need for these depositories of knowledge are at risk from becoming a relic of the past. However, many communities have come to realize how important these centers are and have taken steps to not only modernize, but keep them relevant int his day and age. The City of Palo Alto is one such community. In 2008 a bond $76 million dollar measure was passed to prepare the library system for the future. The Rinconada Library is one of the older ones that has benefited greatly from the modernization push. Designed and built in the 50's, the remodel kept that mid century modern feel and look. The center of the main stack are is dominated by a vaulted ceiling as well as a huge floor to ceiling fireplace in the center. Colorful mid century modern style furniture are scattered about and the whole area is bathed in natural light from the multitude of glass that makes up the walls. In addition to the traditional shelves there are book store style racks highlighting different genres or topics. They also have an extensive CD and DVD collection. While they hardly stock new releases, the CD selection is pretty good and it often allows you to back fill older releases from your favorite groups (Itunes will rip them into to library with hardly any effort) Gone are the old card catalogs and they have been replaced by computer terminals. IF this branch does not have the book you need its a few clicks to order it for pickup at a later date. Internet access and WiFi are also available. Checking out books is as simple as scanning your card, entering your pin, and then placing your items on the scanner. An RFID reader scans the books and you are on your way. The rest of the center has class and meeting rooms, and there are an endless number of classes and events going on. The library is an awesome stop for kids and the surrounding area has alot to see and do. There are no less than 7 art installations located within 100 yards of the library, a community garden, and the art center. In addition the Children's Library, and Rinconada are literately across the road.

This place maintains convenient daily hours, opening at 10:00 am every day except for Thursdays, when they open at 12:00 pm; they close at 6:00 pm sharp throughout the week. The atmosphere is charmingly old-school, offering a serene environment that is ideal for deep focus or quiet reading. There is plenty of parking available, and the floor plan provides numerous seating options for those who prefer to work in silence. We found the staff to be exceptionally helpful and responsive. If you are working as a group, you can easily request a private study room at the front desk. It is worth noting that these rooms are managed digitally by the staff, meaning they must unlock and lock the doors for you rather than you having open access. This extra layer of management ensures the space remains quiet and controlled. Also there are no cafes nearby. Overall, it is a nice, well-maintained facility for anyone looking to be productive in a peaceful setting.

Note that I said Taiwanese Chinese not Taiwanese because they were the type of food that when Chinese soldiers would cook/eat when they first retreated to Taiwan so they don't have the same ingredients they had. The new location is now next to Starbucks instead of the other end of the plaza. The place is clean but slightly smaller. They also changed their menu slightly and they are definitely competing with Duan Chun Zhen across the street. They both offer beef noodle soup so I'll mostly commenting on the difference. Liang definitely gives you more beef (meat, tendon, tripe) but it's also about 50% more expensive. They also added Chinese sauerkraut which makes the soup base very different. I personally prefer the 13 spices used in Duan. The noodles are also different. The texture of Duan is more consistent but Liang feels more handmade. Overall I'd prefer Duan over Liang but Liang has more choices such as beef pancake. In other words if you just want noodles Duan is a better choice but if you want more types of food this is an ok choice. There are also more choices for tea here. Service is alright and it's weird that you cannot order directly using the QR code which only offers the menu. The location is clean and bright which

These wonderful people saved me time and money…read more I was executor to my mother's estate. She left some college money for my niece who was a minor but now an adult. I was in need of help filling out the proper forms requesting a court blocked account be dissolved and funds transferred. I was very lucky to find the Law Library. Someone answered the phone on my first attempt and was pleasant, professional and helpful. She (with the director) discussed my need, helped me with the forms and walked me through the procedure. They reviewed my documents -in person- before I filled. To be honest, I do not know how they exist because they did not charge me for their service. I will now gladly recommend them any time I can.
