The gym itself and the pools are in great shape, but the main entrance area is very uninviting, and doesn't inspire anyone who walks through the door. Firstly, it is a very expensive place to join, and quite simply it is no longer worth the money. I used to be a member, but left due to facilities not being maintained. for long stretches the outdoor pool was unavailable, likewise with the jacuzzi and when speaking to staff it seemed like it was not particularly to get it sorted as quick as possible. Also air conditioning was a problem for the whole time i was there, with it not working in the gym for some time and never working well in the badminton courts, why this hasn't been sorted is beyond me? Recently went back after being offered a free weekend to try it out again, and i wasn't impressed. This was a time where they could have won back my support, but instead i found that the staff could barely be bothered to talk to me about their offers and still many facilities were unstable. The only redeeming feature is the bar, which is really nicely lighted and offers excellent food, however, even this is overpriced.

With the new, large lesuire center now built across the road this center offers a cheaper alternative (although still not that cheap!). Beware however I got caught out with being tied into having to pay membership for a year when I moved away- Im not sure if this is still the case now but you should check this. The gym has the usual range of equipment but there is no swimming pool. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the place is clean and tidy.

The prices are very reasonable and the staff are absolutely lovely. Swimming at MarJons is good, there are always Lifeguards at the pool and they always appear attentive and professional. The pool is a good size and rarely gets overly busy, especially during the summer (non term time) months when the students are away. All the changing rooms and the pool itself are usually clean and lockers are provided (for 20p, which you unfortunately don't get back) Other sports facilities are also good and well priced, badminton is easy to book (you can book in advance, but i personally have never done this) as they have a nice amount of courts. Also, the squash facilities are fine, though they are completely enclosed by solid walls (as opposed to having a glass wall at the back) which is a shame and can sometimes get slightly claustrophobic. Generally though, it's a lovely place and well worth the money, only misses out on 5 stars because it's starting to look slightly dated, it could do with a nice make-over.
