I wouldn't call it a cooking school, for the class we attended was more of an interactive culinary experience. The class isn't designed to ensure that everyone get equal instruction/ demo or time interacting with each dish. Many components were already prepped, so I did a lot of asking to get caught up to speed as to what the ingredients were and how they were prepared. Tim, the head chef was fantastic - friendly, accommodating, and an overall great host. Snacks and beverages were available upon arrival, which was nice because we waited at least 20 minutes after the start time to actually get started. Tim then gave a brief introduction and some cooking tips. We then dispersed to different stations. For the next hour or so, we bounced from station to station to learn about different dishes and participate in making them. Sometimes there was chef instruction, sometimes not. I wish there was a chef at each station to get our money's worth. I noticed a lot of people wandering aimlessly and looking a little lost. I was sad to miss out on learning a couple dishes. Overall, for the price, I wish it was more organized/efficient. If you're looking for a casual cooking experience, then this is a lovely place to go if it doesn't break the bank. For me, it was too expensive for me to confidently recommend to others. read more

FANTASTIC cooking experience at Cavallo Point Cooking School! The theme of our cooking session was "New Orleans Crawl." The menu consisted of: Jalapeno Biscuits Eggs Sardou Crab Cheesecake Shrimp & Grits Chicken Gumbo Beignets Max is 18 students in a session; a cozy fit around the dining table. Tim was our main chef and a wonderful host as were his two assistants. This class is interactive as much as you want it to be. If you're intimidated to participate or not comfortable being around the kitchen, that's ok. Feel free to listen and watch but these classes aren't cheap. It wouldn't hurt to get your hands dirty. Realistically, you won't be able to participate in preparing every dish; choose the dishes you're most interested in. When all is done, the students sit around the dining table to share the meal. There was plenty to go around more than once. My favorite was the Shrimp & Grits, Jalapeno Biscuits, and Beignets. YUM! The room is HUGE, clean, and beautiful. They offered a delicious charcuterie board but the drinks were extra to my surprise. I highly recommend arriving half hour early to find parking. Valet parking is available. The location is GORGEOUS. After class, you can sit outside on their porch and enjoy the sun, have a picnic on the grass, or walk around the area and take pictures of the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate. It is stunning when the sun is out! A wonderful experience! read more

Wonderful experience with delicious food! The chefs were all super knowledgeable and kind. A lot of class participation and learning some great techniques. Only downside was for the price you would expect wine/beer to be included but it was all extra. Most cooking classes I have done have included that and it would have been a nice addition. read more

If I had to rate their communication, I'd give it a -10. I recently tried to book a class for me and 3 other friends 3 weeks before the class. Unfortunately only 1 ticket was purchased and my 3 other friends aren't able to join before it was sold out. I've been trying to call and email them for the last 2 weeks to see if there is a waiting list or if I can cancel my reservation, but I have heard absolutely NOTHING. There is no communication through email or by phone. Their website says "for the fastest response please email us", but its about a week out and still haven't heard anything. I tried calling them but the people in charge of the cooking school do not pick up their phone. My last resort was to call concierge to pass along my message and include my email and phone number. I was told that I would receive a call back or email within 24 hours. It's been 48 hours and I have heard nothing back still. In the end, I have to cancel my spot in the class but that's also impossible. I can't reach anyone to cancel the class and now I have to hope I get a refund by passing along the message to another concierge. read more

This was my first cooking class and I wasn't sure what to expect, but Cavallo Point and Tim (the chef) made it exceptional! Tim welcomed us into the big beautiful kitchen and dining area, offered us drinks and snacks all nicely set up. We met the other students and Tim explained the Japanese cooking class, then we all went to different areas to help with various dishes - there was an area for frying tempura, making sushi rolls, grilling chicken, cutting veggies, etc. You could stay at one station enjoying & perfecting that particular task or rotate around when you wanted - it was the perfect ways to be hands on but also feel free to focus on what you wanted. I ended up working with one sous chef on a beautiful sashimi platter and feel reasonably confident that I could recreated something as beautiful myself (without giving anyone food poisoning!). Tim and his sous chefs were incredibly friendly and helpful. Maybe it was the wine but by the end I felt like some kind of culinary genius even though I was just following instructions! Then we all sat down together to share a HUGE meal - there was more than enough for everyone (so if someone had screwed up a dish - which no one did - you wouldn't have missed it). You could tell we were all so proud and pleased with our creations. I can't think Tim and his staff enough, we can't wait to return for another class soon!!! read more

I went with my sister for a girls weekend at the hotel and included a cooking class the last day. Not knowing what to expect, i was a bit hesitate due to a less than satisfactory prior experience at a cooking class in San Francisco. I was pleasantly surprised by the greetings from the head chef Tony and two sous chefs. Tony was very outgoing and delightful by spending time greeting each guest. We where then surprised to see freshly made pastries, coffee, water, and drinks for us to enjoy while others arrive. The kitchen was amazing, clean and beautifully designed. The ingredients presentation on the front table was stunning. The whole experience was wonderful I would recommend this as a great activity to all my friends in family. read more

The cooking class on 10/12/2013 was a lot of fun!! Everyone's fun to cook with. Here's a list of what we made: - Japanese rice balls with tuna salad filling and salmon filling - chicken skewers with shiso leaves and freshly-made plum/sake sauce - Kombucha croquets - spicy prawns - Seafood egg custards (seafood steamed egg soup) - Pork tonkasu - Seared Ahi Tuna - sashimi rice salad with wasabi aioli Everything's delicious and fun to make! We drank lots of wine and sake as well! I would recommend this place to family and friends and I would definitely go back again when the menu looks good to me! p.s. The chef instructor and her assistants were all very friendly and fun to cook with! read more

We attended Sicilian Summer cooking class today with Chef Tony Adams. We have been to several cooking classes at Cavallo Point over the years and enjoy them. This one today was beyond excellent as Chef Tony makes it fun while imparting lots of practical tips. Clearly he has expertise and loves teaching and cooking. There were two other chefs present and sadly I don't recall their names but each one were knowledgeable and patient, friendly and helpful. And each dish we made was excellent. I am looking forward to making the Arancini and Swordfish Pignoli Breadcrumb Involtini. read more

Attended a class here and had a fantastic time. Chef Jayne and her staff were very professional and focused on really educating us on how and why they use certain cooking methods and its impact on the food. Atmosphere was perfect for a date night/ a girls' night out/ birthday gift to a parent and all the attendees were very social. I'd say this class would be appropriate for beginner/ intermediate students. The food was ACTUALLY really good. Chef Jayne was in charge of cooking the main entree protein but I really didn't mind since it would have been unfeasible to complete a slow braised pork shoulder in a 4 hour class (only about 1 of which is used to actually cook- the rest of the time is dedicated to listening to Chef Jayne's lecture and eating/drinking). Special shoutout to Enriquez wines who provided the wine to pair with our meals. I didn't really expect much since it seemed like a marketing ploy but the wines were also well conceptualized and complemented the dishes. Would purchase again! read more

We had a office offsite at cavallo point and the cooking class was part of our team building exercise. Had an absolute blast!! My wife bought tickets to this cooking school as a gift. We attended the class that focuses on locally sourced produce. First, the staff is terrific. The head chef is knowledgeable, funny and engaging. Absolutely no complaints about the staff - all worth 5 stars. But the program leaves much to be desired. The class started at 6:30pm. We sit down at long tables, order a drink/wine and the chef begins his talk which takes almost an hour - very entertaining, but we didn't learn much outside of how to hold a knife and how large a "pinch of salt" should be and the advantages of purchasing from farmers markets. There were at least 7 or 8 items on the menu that evening and he had previously divided all of us into groups with each group assigned 1 dish. That's when the wheels came off the wagon. Every group was assigned a space - some big and some small and began to prepare their dish. We were NOT given lessons on how each should be prepared - just a recipe. There was a large table with all the produce on it, but some items were hidden away in cabinets. It was like the mad dash at the Quick Fire portion of Top Chef. We could ask questions of the staff, but it was chaos. Somehow all the dishes were finished and all were OK, but it was about 9:30 when we finally ate - much too late. Some observations: 1. Far too many people in the class and too many dishes to be prepared. I would have prefered if we all made the same 2-3 dishes and were tought the special skills to make them great. As it is, I learned nothing since I already knew how to hold a knife. 2. They make an attempt to accommodate special dietary requirements, which is good, but the head chef believes that the more salt that's added, the better the dish. Some dishes ended up being very salty. Same thing for butter - the more the better. So we were cooking heart-attack on a plate dishes. Bottom line: It was a frenetic evening. Not to say we didn't have fun, but, we really didn't enhance our cooking skills. I added a star because it was entertaining, otherwise, this would have been a 2 star experience. read more

Really bad experience. I've heard good things about this school and have been trying to get in for a while but the way their scheduling works, makes it tough. They don't have a set time when they advertise upcoming classes - it could be 6 weeks or 2 weeks so you really have to keep an eye on the site. And if you contact them after it's been advertised it may be full (this was my experience a few times in the past year). For my birthday this year, my mom planned a visit from So. Cal and wanted to take me to a cooking class. She contacted Cavallo Point a few months in advance and was told about their scheduling policy and also notified that it could be cancelled for ANY reason (? weird). Kind of difficult to plan a weekend around especially when you have flights involved. Anyway, after mom stalked the site (quite a feat for someone with mom's computer skills) and called every few days we finally got a class and were beyond exited and so looking forward to our special day. Wednesday, before my moms flight Thurs. She called Cavallo to confirm. They verified class was ON- YAY! Thursday she received an Eventbrite notification instructing her to print her tickets which we did. Friday afternoon at 2:15 (outside their 24 hour cancellation) she received an email saying class was cancelled AND we would not get refunded for 48 hours. Incredibly disappointing. My poor mom worked so hard to make this a perfect birthday celebration for me and was completely let down and disappointed. Very sad. Especially the service and lack of compensation - they offered no alternative and as mentioned keep the $200....here it is Monday and still no refund. Very upsetting. The lack of care & concern was disheartening to say the least. I've been to Cavallo point many times and do not think the cooking school is representative of the restaurant or spa. I will continue to recommend that our friends and family visit CP but will NOT suggest the cooking school. read more

If the experience we went through is indicative of their general business practices, I would STRONGLY encourage you to spend your money elsewhere. My husband and I forked over $250 for the cooking school. Day of the event, his back went out and we wound up in the emergency room. I called and asked if we could possibly carryover the reservation, this was a birthday gift and we really can't afford to throw away $250. The woman on the reservation line told me no (very rudely, I might add). I said that while I understand their 72 hour cancellation policy, I was hoping that in a unique situation like ours they could extend some consideration and a bit more flexibility. The woman's response (and this is verbatim) "That's simply too bad. We don't DO flexibilty". Gee - in this economy it must be nice to be so well off that you can afford to treat your potential customers like crap. read more

I had a major geek out moment here last night. We were lucky enough to be one of the first groups to come through this cooking school/teambuilding location/event space. Sixth in fact! Hosted and taught by three amazingly kind and friendly people - January, Jane and (geek alert) Kelsie Kerr. Yes, the Kelsie Kerr that cowrote Alice Waters' latest book. Yes, the Kelsie Kerr that worked with Alice for ages. Yes, the Kelsie Kerr from Cafe Rouge (http://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-rouge-berkeley). Yes, THIS Kelsie Kerr: http://www.foodandwine.com/bestnewchefs/?year=1997&chef=8197E227-8D04-4053-9EDA9C500DB08AB7 So yeah, I geeked out a little. I seriously felt like I was living in Ruth Reichl's books when she was describing these amazing home cooked dinners she'd have in this area; the "cooks" of which went on to be world renowned chefs or foodies in their own rights. I felt so lucky to be learning from, cooking with, getting compliments from, and then sitting down and eating with a person who could cook circles around me. The entire team was incredibly down to earth, warm, knowledgeable and fun. The location can host cooking demos for 30 or so, classes for 20ish and they do tastings for hotel guests and other customers. Not surprising at all - the school focuses on local, sustainable meals given that we live in the best pantry ever. Kelsie picked up the ingredients for our dinner at the Ferry Plaza that day, and could tell us about every vendor, every item - they all had a story. THIS is cooking. THIS is learning. I have notes scribbled all over my recipes, I took a gabillion photos with my iPhone, and I had at least one too many glasses of wine. For a foodie, this was a night I will never forget. For people new to cooking who may not be that into it, I have a feeling it was still a night they'll never forget. We all got hands on, we all took ownership, we all contributed to this amazing meal. I would eat here every night if I could. Especially since Jane wouldn't let me do the dishes. I hate dishes. read more

Bait and Switch. We were given a gift for a cooking class at Cavallo Point. We were unable to attend the original course/date and cancelled (well in advance). Cavallo Point (1) lost our course pre-payment record, (2) demanded that I repurchase tickets for the class we chose until they reviewed their records and (3) once we presented our pre-payment records, it still took a special review by the GM. I had over 10 calls and emails to try to remedy a simple situtation. The Cavallo Point staff was generally not helpful and often rude. Not only bad business practices -- probably not legal either. To pour salt int he wound, we had signed up for a specifically for a demonstration class on asian cooking, as we wanted to relax, watch and learn some asian techniques. I also have a bad back and am not supposed to stand for extended time. I confirmed when I made the reservation that it was a demonstration (not hands on) course. When we arrived the day of the class, they had changed it to a hands on class and assigned each of us to a course, regardless of what we preferred. My vegetarian guest was required to do skewered chicken hears and I had to do fried chicken (I don't make or eat fried food). Our instructor was snippy, even rude and clearly did not get along with the main instructor. Even after the very negative business experience, this class was not the demonstration class we signed up for. It might be a fine course for those who wanted a hands on course, but it was not what was advertized or even confirmed when we made our reservation. I am still waiting for my refund of their required re-payment in advance of the course, when they couldn't find their own records of our initial payment. We are also still waiting for the recipies which were supposed to be emailed the next day to all participants. There are much better cooking classes in Marin, San Francisco and Napa, with much better attitudes toward their clients. read more

I took my mom here for a shellfish-themed cooking class for her birthday and we had an absolute blast. The class was taught by Jayne, who had clearly spent the entire day exploring the greater North Bay to get exactly the right ingredients for the class. She was assisted by Chef Jen and Chef Rosalyn (probably spelled wrong), who were incredibly patient with their clumsy students and incredibly generous in sharing their knowledge. The school itself is an amazing room, with a huge island in the middle with HD cameras and screens set up so you get a birds-eye view of the what the chefs are doing at two different cooking stations. We began with a quick review of the recipes (printed out for you to take home) and some tips for buying and cleaning shellfish. We split up into groups to prepare different dishes for the evening, with a chef from the Cooking School leading each group. As you prepare each dish you learn some of the basic techniques - from how to properly hold a knife to cooking stock. One of the best things about the evening was the other students. Everyone was so friendly and jovial, it made for a fun atmosphere and by the end of three short hours we were all friends. They even sang happy birthday to my mom, who has since said it was her best birthday ever. This would be a great thing to do as a girls' weekend, a romantic away-from-the-kids anniversary gift, or even as a corporate retreat (PLEASE someone send me on a corporate retreat here). The classes are all different, with varying degrees of hands-on experience, so you may want to call or email the school for details about the class you are interested in. The Cooking School classes are filling up quickly these days, so make your reservation early. You get a discount on rooms (our discount was $40/night) when you enroll in a class, so spend a little extra $ and stay the night at Cavallo Point Lodge. read more

Within ten minutes of starting this class, my friend and I (both completely clueless cooks) managed to drop sharp knives dangerously close to toes, mispronounce carpaccio, and ask insultingly simple questions about how to sprinkle salt without getting it all over the floor. Any sane instructor would have let us slice our own fingertips off with the vegetable grater, but not here. All the teachers were incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and full of useful and memorable advice. The cooking room itself was warmly lit in a fabulous location overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, and the people in the class were friendly. The dozen or so people in the class (mostly in couples) broke into three groups to prepare appetizers, a main course, and dessert. At the end we all sat down at a long table to enjoy our creations and drink more wine. Excellent all around. read more

I scored some major hubby points on this one. My wife's birthday - what to do? She loves to cook. She loves to learn new things. Hmm... but will she take it as an insult that I'm sending her to cooking school? Aw heck, I'm going for it... Wow, what a blast. Arriving at Cavallo Point one is immediately struck by how beautiful and prime this location is. It's worth a visit to see. http://www.yelp.com/biz/cavallo-point-lodge-sausalito Entering the classroom you are greeted warmly with a chilled glass of wine. Some snacks are laid out; bread, cheese, olives, etc. tasty stuff. The evening's menu/recipe list is handed out and everything gets a quick rundown. We break into teams and each team takes on a course. I made Crème Fraîche Ice Cream with a Cara Cara Orange Caramel sauce. Maybe I should mention that it's my job at home to make the salad and it's good night when it doesn't get burned... To make a long story short, the evening was incredible. The staff was amazing. Jane - you rock. The ingredients were all fresh and tasted like heaven. I asked one of the staff for seconds and she immediately beamed a huge smile and said, "nothing makes me happier than to feed a healthy appetite!". I think I fell in love right then... So whether you already know how to cook or are a complete novice, the Cooking School can handle you; whatever your level. The menu changes often, and the dishes, while semi-complicated and something you'd expect to see in a restaurant, were actually pretty easy to put together. Just watch the caramel. You turn your head for just a few minutes... Oh and by the way, they offer discounted rates if you want to stay the night at Cavallo Point. VERY reasonable for VERY nice accommodations. I went with a group of friends to a Tapas cooking class at Cavallo Point cooking school, hoping to learn how to make some Spanish appetizers for upcoming holiday parties. First, this should have NEVER have been called a TAPAS cooking class. The definition of Tapas is small bites or appetizers. The menu was a pomegranate salad, a skewer of pork, a rice dish, a squash and leek dish, a stuffed pepper and an almond cookie, hardly small bites Forgetting the menu when you attend a cooking class the usual expectations is to learn how to make the I dishes that are on the menu. We were divided in groups of 3 or 4 participants to prepare one item. We never were taught or shown how to make any of the other dishes. So much for it being a cooking class. We were given the recipes to take home to make but we could have saved money and just bought a cook book. The class was suppose to be from 6:39 to 9:30. We started promptly at 6:30 and was finished cooking before 7:45. We ate what was prepared and were ready to go by 8:15 None of the dishes, with the exception of the skewered pork would I serve at a cocktail party and the other dishes I wouldn't even make for a dinner party. The almond cookies were made out of potatoes (yes potatoes). Save your money and buy a cookbook of dishes you would really like to serve or better yet try another cooking school read more

We were taking pictures of Kelsie Kerr, the culinary arts program developer for a magazine. We started with her shopping in San Rafael's farmers market. Getting local produce for cooking in the school, my what amazing vegetables, some I've never seen before. The bay area growers showing their proud vegetables, cheese, grains. If I was vegetarian again I would think I died and gone to heaven. OK, bay area is heaven to me. But back to the cooking school, the atmosphere was fun in a big kitchen area with many tables so we could sample the local cheese and vegetable she bought that day. If you couldn't see what was going on with the wine and just listen to the voices and the talk about local foods, you would think it was a holiday party, not a cooking class. The pork roast season with lemon slices and herbs went perfect with the wine. The upside down pear, yes local pear cake flipped by Kelsie from heavy iron skillet to cutting board to my mouth was the grand finally that said cooking school is the next big vacation. Don't miss out. Never the less, it was an informative and fun class in beautiful Cavallo Point in Sausalito. AWESOME EXPERIENCE AND AMAZING FOOD!!! This was a really cool thing my gf and I did with one of her friends. It wasn't too hard (they did most of the prep before we got there and already had cooked the ribs - we just threw them on the grill to warm up). To the negative reviews complaining that they couldn't take food away (or couldn't eat outside food there): they don't have the license you need to be a restaurant. Too bad I wasn't paying attention to our instructor's name, but the main reason I am giving a 4 star review is because of him! My husband and I came to a knife skills class just before Thanksgiving. It was relatively inexpensive ($70 for the two of us) and it was a short, 2 hour class. We learned really practical skills about how to most effectively and efficiently cut veggies and fruits, and equally important, how to care for our knives. Everyone practiced with their own knives and food items, and the instructor came around to anyone needing assistance. He was a younger guy, maybe late twenties, but extremely knowledgeable, fun, and good at teaching. Not every great chef can explain how and why to do something! Given that Thanksgiving was two days later, we were a little surprised that we only got to watch him cut the turkey properly (we did not get to try on our own). I suppose it was because there was only one turkey and 20 people, but it would have been helpful if we could have been involved somehow in doing some of the cutting. Overall a great learning experience, very useful, and we can't wait to go back for a cooking class! read more

We have been to two cooking classes taught by Jayne. Both times were very instructive, hands on and a lot of fun! It is truly a great value; we make things that we are able to replicate at home time and again. Jayne throws out tons of tips (like cutting your deviled eggs through the middle instead of lengthwise and cutting the top/bottom so they stand up better)...her Backyard BBQ class this past week-end was well worth the cost of the class! As a matter of fact, after taking cooking classes there with Jayne at Cavallo Point, we chose to get married there...and we will, in August! We will take more classes in the future, as well. My friend and I were fortunate enough to go to the Farmers Market with Chef Tony. I have to say the class far exceeded our expectations. Chef taught us to engage with our farmers. A hugely disappointing expenditure of $4,700. Planned a team building day and arrived happy and excited. Had paid an extra $700 to have new aprons of different colors so we could cook in teams. They weren't there, but instead they had faded old aprons piled up on a table. Finally someone found the box of aprons and plopped on the table (the left and and the right hand were NOT communicating). I ended up organizing the aprons into colors and distributing myself. No tables were set up to welcome us, and the food was haphazard (didn't make a meal). Jayne (director?) actually shoved two of us aside as we were at the sink, and shoved aside two others at the ovens. (Is this the way you treat guests?) She seemed harassed and angry. One of our group called her "mean". At the end we had paid for 36 people, and only 30 could attend. One of the group asked if she could have some boxes for the food to take back to those who were not able to attend. Jayne told us "no, that's for the staff". Really? We paid for 6 extra meals and you won't let us take a box away?? Could you be any more miserly?? Lastly, one person asked if there was going to be a dessert (again, we expected to create a full meal). Jayne said "no". I said I wold pay for a dessert if she would be able to find a cake or pie or cupcakes (it is a resort after all). Jayne came back with a huge long box and said "You'll be charged for this" (which was fine). The group gathered around and Jayne announced "You can't eat that here, you have to leave". When we got back on our transport I found out why she didn't want us to open the box. It was filled with dried up muffins and rolls from breakfast. Ugh. But this is what we had come to expect as typical for the day. Mean and miserly. I did call Cavallo Point to talk with someone that afternoon about this experience (Sophie) who said she would let the "right people know" and "would get back to me". It's been a week and no word from anyone. Why did I expect to have someone care? read more

I was so excited to be attending a cooking class tonight but got sick with a heavy, heavy cold. I didn't think it would be fair to subject the other participants to me - pretty unhygienic - so explained my situation and requested to move to another class. I got a very solid NO. Policy is policy, apparently. Tells me that Cavallo Point is only interested in protecting their profits and not their customer experience. read more

After seeing all of the amazing reviews my husband and I attended for a date night for tacos and tequila. #1 we weren't on the list and were told to wait until the chef got there...even though we had tickets and proof of purchase--- ok, fine. Then once we were cleared to sit we were immediately split into other groups not seeing each other for most of the night. In the sub groups we only each got to learn how to make two of the 10+ dishes that were served and i spent the majority of the time juicing limes not learning. The recipes weren't awesome, our assistant chef didn't know the recipe and apparently we learned it wrong. Lastly, the best dish was one the chef braised the beef for before we even got there, so we didn't get to learn that one. I've attended two other cooking classes at other locations, both were less expensive, with excellent hands on instruction and the food was amazing. I wouldn't go back to this one. read more
