Went here this weekend for the first time in a few years. Holy smokes am I happy I did. They have a nice selection of items for ALL sizes and I felt the prices were reasonable. There were several employees on the sales floor who offered assistance but did not pressure sell. If I could give more than five stars I would! I have purchased many (way too many) hats in my lifetime so one might say that I know hats. So when I decided I needed a new black felt I already knew that I wanted a Resistol Black Gold 20x (not a cheap hat). The person who sold me the hat was Jeff (he might be the owner) and I received the kind of service that is lacking in most retail establishments today. Jeff LISTENED to what I had to say and what I wanted. First he showed me exactly the hat I was looking for but also showed me less expensive ones and a few more expensive ones Just so I would know what my options were AND explained the difference in each one. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable which I appreciate it very much. We settled on the Resistal. Then it needed it to be shaped and Jeff turned it over to the fella (I wish I could remember his name,I posted a picture). Again the level of service was exceptional! He really took the time to listen to me and understand what I wanted while talking to me about the hat what he was doing and the best way to take care of my new hat. He did a perfect job when all he had to go by was my description and a photo I happened to have of me wearing my brown felt. We went there over the Christmas holiday to look around and help my father-in-law find something interesting to take back to Michigan. They have a nice selection of authentic western clothing and furniture. They had reasonable prices and it was very clean inside. I would shop there again if it wasn't for what happened at the checkout counter. They wanted to fingerprint my wife for a credit card transaction. This is completely unreasonable. The checkout person said that it was put into place to deal with credit card fraud. Apparently, neither she, nor the store manager, nor the owners have read the credit card merchant agreements. For instance, Section 9.11.2 of the Mastercard Merchant Agreement regarding Cardholder Identification explicitly states the following: "A merchant must not refuse to complete a MasterCard card transaction solely because a cardholder who has complied with the conditions for presentment of a card at the POI refuses to provide additional identification information, except as specifically permitted or required by the Standards." That means NO licenses, NO passports, and definitely NO Fingerprints! The only exceptions in the Standards are for situations such as requiring an address for mail order items, and entering a zip code for point-of-sale transactions such as a pay-at-the-pump gas stations where there is no attendant and no signature. What merchants are supposed to do is compare the signature on the back of the card to the signature on the sales agreement. That's all. That's what they signed up for when they decided to take credit cards. Until they remove this policy, I won't be shopping there. What will they want next, a retina scan and a blood sample? I'm sorry to hear about the guy in the previous review having the issue with the fingerprint request, as I would be very upset about that also. That is definitely WAY too big brother, and not in keeping with our Texan values. However a request to provide a valid Driver's License in conjunction with a credit card purchase is always responded to by me with a "thank you for asking", as I have experienced credit card fraud before and it is a horrendous experience. That being said, I've shopped at Cattleman's for 20 years and never experienced that ... including as recently as this 2016 Christmas season. I'm saddened to hear that one of our visitors from out of State left with a bad impression of our town and Cattleman's. I don't know what prompted them to do that, maybe the customer being from out of State, but I agree that fingerprints are a really bad approach in this case and I hope that practice has been discontinued. I've never had that happen to me, but I'm sorry it did to them. Beyond that dust up, Cattleman's is an AWESOME family owned store, with great merchandise and wonderful and truly kind and caring employees. They are an absolute cherished gem in Alvin, being one of the few generations-long held merchants remaining in Alvin, besides our beloved Stanton's, that still has the old world "ma & pa" atmosphere remaining with the great values of really good service and "can't find it anywhere else" merchandise. I've purchased every one of my best and favorite boots from Cattleman's and I have an extremely odd boot size of 9 1/2 Narrow. They have the best of the best, and many TRULY unique pairs of boots, especially those with "riding heels" that seem to be getting harder to find at the BIG boot stores like Cavender's and such. So, I hope that Cattleman's has abandoned this practice AND I hope that anyone reading these reviews knows that Cattleman's is a treasure from days gone past and takes the time to experience this awesome merchant. Bought my first pair ok justin work boots turned out it was half a size too big so after maybe 24 hours I went back to return them and they asked if I put them on i told them yes not wanting to lie they told me that because I wore them they can't return them. This was not told when bought all they said was I had 30 days to return them very upset turns out you can't use anything or even try it on outside the store if not they aren't accepting it worst place I've been to for a small business makes me not want to support local stores any more if they all want to be like that read more
