Catheys Valley Park, Mariposa: 2026 Jul (5 of 5)
A Perfect Stop for a Respite
If you're travelling along CA-140 in western Mariposa County and needed to take a break, there's no better place to stretch your legs than at Catheys Valley. Catheys Valley is a peaceful, rural ranching community. The park offers a quiet escape with convenient traveler amenities.
It looks like a 'modern' toilet was installed. The toilet is usually clean and the rest area is well-maintained by the county. Volunteer groups, called "Friends of the Park" are ever present to care for the park. The park itself boasts of picnic tables, baseball field, and swings. Catheys Valley Park is a safe and relaxing place to get some shut-eye. I always feel safe as a lone traveler while taking my breaks here.
There is a monument at the entrance that shows a little of the early history. The plaque describes the 1879 one-room schoolhouse, which was restored by the Cathey's Valley Historical Society.
History (from Wikipedia):
Catheys Valley is in Mariposa County. Elevation: 1,325 feet (404 m). Named after Andrew Cathey, a native of North Carolina, who settled in the valley around 1850. He decided to leave North Carolina on an exploratory trip to California. Their wagons loaded with household goods - they blazed a trail westward. In 1854, Andrew D. Cathey purchased a ranch. This became Andrew and his wife Mary's first, new, real home. Cathey's Valley now bears his name. Andrew Cathey became very involved in civic and political activities. He enjoyed exhibiting his abundant produce in the Merced Fair. A few of his trees and vines are still standing, although very sparse after nearly 150 years. read more
