I took the Willa Cather walking tour in Red Cloud with a high school student. The tour was to her childhood home and around Red Cloud. The town is a little out of the way, but can be combined with a visit to the National Parks Homestead Memorial further South. We did this as a cutoff trip going between two interstates.

But seeing the town on foot with homes and downtown typical of that time was still interesting to a suburbanite without prior exposure midwest small town life..
The Willa Cather tie in is the main reason to visit Red Cloud. Even it you are not a Cather fan, the Pioneer Memorial natural prairie areas outside of town are well worth a stop. Just to see the restored prairie of the pioneers in this part of "fllyover" America is an experience, visualizing it stretching endlessly before you in all directions. We saw it lush and flowering due to previous months heavy rain. The tall and beautiful grasses and wildflowers are wild and untamed compared to the tidy farms that replaced it. read more
