Mission San Jose is referred to as the "Queen of the Missions" as it has the most working parts of…read moreall of the 5 UNESCO World Heritage missions in San Antonio (including The Alamo). It's got a grist mill that continues to work as it did in 1794, as well as a granary, convent, and a church that continues to hold mass. The reason I mention all this stuff is because I think (to a certain extent) an opportunity is missed in really bringing home the greatness of the Mission through the items in the Gift Shop. Now, when I go to a Gift Shop named after the facility it is in, I expect more GENERAL items related to the place: Post Cards, books, and a whole bunch of somewhat basic, inclusive, even kitschy stuff that will remind us of our journey. However, the San Jose Gift Shop is really the Mission San Jose (CHURCH) gift shop, and that limits the scope. However, the Gift Shop is awesome if you're Catholic, even Christian, or just like crosses and religious items. There's literally a cross for every taste: you want one that combines your patriotism with your love of Christ? They have it. Want a cross that also gives homage to the U.S. military? They've got it. Want to get your daughter a nice cross but it needs to fit pink and upbeat motif of her room? They've got it. Want a straight up, no frills, serious, large, brass cross with Jesus on it? They've got it too. They've also got a lot of religious figurines of Mary, Joseph, a whole punch of saints, and more Angels than you'll find just about anywhere in Texas. They also have a lot of bracelets and jewelry that fit well with the southwestish, Mexicanish motif of the place in its time. In the end, a nice gift shop worth a visit.

One notable difference, in my humble opinion, is Mission Espada's El Cantico is a bit more tourist-friendly. Both stores are worth a visit, both have plenty of religious stuff ... El Cantico just has a better balance with more tourist-friendly gifts. The real set-apart are the t-shirts ... plenty of 'em, plenty of sizes, plenty of colors, all pretty subtle with the beautiful, understand Mission Espada logo on them. I was there in early February, it was nice to see a Valentine's display that focused on their signs and cups more focused on love than religion. And yes, miles and miles of crosses, plenty of Prayer cards, tons of "I love Texas" trinkets, reams of religious figures, several scenes from important religious events, many mass books, gobs of gift sets, and .... well ... you get the idea. I liked the pin map, where all visitors can put one for where they've come from. It's cool to see the scope of this tiny, beautiful, unassuming church. Don't forget to visit!
