Even though their pricing was at the high end of the estimates we received, i chose them because of: their great reviews here and elsewhere; affiliation with WBUR public radio and Historic New England; their estimate was extremely detailed; and they work on a lot of old houses. I expected their attention to detail and customer service to be just as detailed as their estimate but they fell far short of meeting our expectations. If it weren't for me directing the painters each day, we would've had a number of areas that were either not painted at all, not properly prepped, or painted the wrong color. I gave one star because their painters did an acceptable job...but only because I had to manage them by myself. They needed direction, which the project manager Pete did not provide. And when he was here he never gave me a heads up; if I happened to notice Pete was here he would disappear before I could get outside to look at things with him. At the end of the job, even on the last day, he did not meet with us when punch list items should have been reviewed. They also refused to do the last bit of work we planned on. It was estimated separately because they were still discussing with us which floor sealer to use and another contractor had to install the gutters first before they came back to paint them. Pete, backed up by Nigel (the owner) decided they didn't want to work with us anymore because they "did not meet our expectations." Normally if a business admits to not meeting the expectations of their customer, they try to correct the problem to make the customer happy. In this case, apparently because we complained about the above issues as well as some damage to our antique hardware and floor, they dumped us with 1-2 days work left to do. (They didn't have to honor the second estimate because we hadn't paid a deposit yet - they hadn't billed us yet, though we technically had a verbal and written agreement via email). Lesson learned, if you arrange work on a separate estimate, be sure to pay the deposit so they are locked into finishing your job! When invoiced, they tried to charge us for work not done (I knew this because I was here everyday managing the job) so i had to ask them to reduce the bill by that amount. When I received the adjusted invoice, I asked for a discount due to our dismal experience, the amount of personal time I had to spend managing this project, as well as the damage that they did not address. The owner responded by threatening to have his lawyer put a lien on our house instead of first trying to make this right, which is the number one tenet of customer service. Incredibly disappointing and confusingly awful customer service. DO NOT HIRE THEM. read more

The initial assessment of our house painting job was very thorough. This was done by Nigel, who inspired confidence. We picked Catchlight over other painters because of our perception that there was a lot of attention to detail. The house painting was done by some men who drove up from Rhode Island each day. They did good work. Catchlight was unable to do certain aspects of the job, however, since these aspects required a carpenter that was not available. I previously wrote a negative Yelp review. This was related to my mistake regarding missed communication, and also my surprise regarding 30 hours of additional work done. Nigel was kind enough, and professional enough, however, to meet with me and review everything in detail. He was able to restore the trust. I am reassured and am looking forward to Catchlight finishing the carpentry and other painting when the carpenter is available in the spring. read more

Nigel, the owner, did a thorough walk-thru and examination of our house before the job began - his knowledge of historical building practices and materials was impressive -- and he explained how they affect the way the house ages, how it should be painted, etc. The painting crew thorough, organized and hardworking. My 122 year old home needs a paint job, and I want it done right. I was doing my own research online about best practices and materials after receiving conflicting ideas from several contractors. I stumbled upone Catchlight's website, and spent nearly an our reading over their very informative articles. I would love to hire these guys, the only reason I can't, is because I live in Chicago. On a whim, I emailed them to see if they could answer a couple of questions for me. Nigel wrote me back immediately and told me to call him. I bid on a Catchlight Painting certificate at a fundraiser for My Life My Choice. I booked an appointment with Jessica Sargent through e-mail. I took a day off work, made arrangements for my kids to go elsewhere, and boarded my dog. They never showed up. I e-mailed, called, and FB messaged. When I received a call, I was told the job from the previous day ran into my appointment time. I inquired why I never got a courtesy call as a heads up and then I was told my appointment was never in the book. Obviously one of those statements was a lie. I was really upset because I made arrangements-not to mention I spent some time patching holes and getting my house "paint ready". I also cleaned the rooms that needed painting (that included unplugging everything as well as moving all the furniture around). I did get an e-mail from Jessica apologizing; however I was not offered anything for my wasted time. I responded to her e-mail and asked if I could have an additional 1-2 hours of painting for our inconvenience, but received no response. In the end, the painter agreed to come the following day...another day taken off work, another day of daycare costs, another dog boarding fee. I never write reviews regardless of the ranking, but my experience with Catchlight Painting was exceptional. It is safe to say Catchlight Painting is catching. I have a recently purchased 1890 Victorian home with all the complications of horsehair plaster, calcimine ceilings, requiring significant plastering, and needing upgrades to capture the beauty of the home. Nevermind the dark green, orange and blue rooms that needed multiple coats of linen white paint. The Catchlight Painting team is exceptional all the way through. Yes, let it be said they are great painters; and they are professional, accommodating, friendly, have the highest work ethic, are perfectionist, and clean up all their work after each day. There were times my home looked like a cyclone hit it between the painting, carpentry, and electricial work, but when I returned home each day I found it clean and dust free. Amazing! While having work can be daunting, Catchlight Painting takes some of the air out of the balloon and makes it a reasonably civilized experience. Nigel gets a thank you for starting and leading a great company; Scott my foreman was the calm and steady all the way through; and Wanderson my daily paint lead was like a Brazilian army leader (and, I mean this in the kindest way. He had plan each day, led the team with efficiency, checked with me that the plan was feasible, and is a lovely person.). There are so many others on the team. And, yes this is a team and the tone is set all the way through. You will hear Catchlight Painting is expensive and they certainly charge more than individual proprietors. A few weeks ago I searched for a painter who could deliver prompt service and great attention to detail....and I found one! Catchlight Painting was a delight to work with from the first phone call and beyond the completion of the job. After reading several great Yelp reviews I called Catchlight. I received a phone call back from the owner within minutes and had a confirmation email for our appointment (which was the next day!) just moments after our phone call. Our home had pretty severe water damage from a roof leak. Catchlight's team of painters were on time (they agreed to arrive after my kids left for school), very courteous and detail oriented. They cleaned up each night and left my home neat and organized. I have a neighbor who builds homes for a living, he commented on the exactness of the paint line from ceiling to wall! We had a wonderful experience with Catchlight Painting! We had a stain in our ceiling from a water leak above our unit. Nigel and Jessica worked with us to provide a quote through the pictures we sent them. They took the time to answer all of the questions that we had. On the day of the job, Xavier and Alex showed up to paint the ceiling. They did an excellent job at making sure all of our furniture was covered and finished the job in less time than expected. They said what they would do, and did what they said and more. Our interior house painting was a disaster after the first crew we had. and Nigel's team came to the rescue. I had a fantastic experience with Catchlight Painting this week! I wanted to paint an accent wall and when I realized how much taping was involved (2 windows, moldings, fireplace, shelf and a mounted TV that swung out which he had to work behind as removing would have been too difficult) , I contacted 3 different painting companies including one I had used twice in the past. Nigel at Catchlight was the first to respond (one of the 3 never bothered to call back at all). Nigel explained that I'd be hiring a painter for the full day, so along with the accent wall; I decided to refresh the entire living room. Catchlight sent out TIM, who arrived 2 minutes early (as my Dad is fond of saying, "if you're not early, you're late"). He was friendly and professional. I explained what I wanted and that once he was done with the accent wall and living room, if he had time, could he also do the hallway leading from the first to second floor. Never could I imagine that he would actually get all of that completed in 8 hours, but he did! He was completely diligent, smoothing any uneven surfaces, filling nail holes, etc.... He gave excellent advice as well (we have a half wall that I wanted painted in the accent color but my husband did not.....once we talked to Tim about how it would blend with the accent wall, I got my half wall in the shade I wanted and my husband has to admit, it looks fantastic!). Also, I had asked Tim to use a Valspar Crystal additive to give the accent wall a subtle gold sparkle. Although he had not seen the product before, he didn't balk at the request and was happy to learn about a new product. I couldn't be happier with the work that was completed and the professionalism of the entire Catchlight operation. The price was more than fair as well! I am a real estate appraiser who is often asked for recommendations from new home owners for painters, HVAC people, roofers, etc.... This company does excellent work. I would rehire them in a minute. I appreciated it that the painters did not play their radios or other audible devices in our house. They painted several interior rooms, a bathroom and a hall. The painters did not interfere with our family life. Nigel (the owner ) carefully explained ahead of time the nature of the work that would be done. His workers were very careful not to allow lead paint chips or dust into the rest of the house as they did the surface prep. Careful, thorough, and professional, excellent work. We've used Catchlight for both indoor and outdoor work, most recently having all of the outdoor trim repainted. While they don't come cheap, we very much regretted using the painters with the cheapest estimate the last time we painted outside (and then found oil paint somehow made it onto the inside surfaces). It's never fun to have a work crew at your house for a few weeks, but they made it as easy a possible, very courteous and as low-impact as possible.
