We've been to Catalina a few times and we're looking for something new to do so we booked tickets for Falconry on the lawns of the Descanso Beach Club and ended up having a blast! We learned a ton about man's oldest sport and got the chance to not only have a hawk fly and land on our arms but we also got to see a falcon up close (the fastest animal on the planet) and see and take pictures with Ruby the owl. Dave was our instructor and you could tell he really loves the birds and was very knowledgable and explained how birds came to the island and how the birds protect visitors from pesky seagulls! I can't speak highly enough for this experience and really made this visit unique. As one of only 30 licensed falconry places in the US, it was a treat to experience this.

This hawk was lighter than I thought.

This was an excellent experience! You got to be up close and personal with the birds. There were three different birds they presented- falcon, hawk, and an owl. All of them were amazing! My 2 kids (8 and 10 years old) really enjoyed this experience. There was a part where they had the participations put on a glove, and the hawk would fly to your glove. The trainer was really knowledgeable and I learned a lot about these animals . If you love birds of prey, this is definitely an experience you shouldn't miss. This experience was actually the reason we visited Catalina Island (first time going) and it did not disappoint! My kids want to do this again the next time we visit the island.

Let me start from the beginning, I've been going to Catalina Islands for many many years and have enjoyed Avalon tremendously. In my time on the island, I've noticed a falconer, keeping the area free of seagulls and nuisance birds. I have spoke to the falconer many times his name is Dave, very nice dude and very willing for any conversation about his job. Well, while we are walking around in the afternoon Friday, we found him and talked to him briefly again and he explained to us that he had a class on Saturday at 9:45 and to go online and sign up, with myself and two of my friends, I did and I can't tell you what very cool and satisfying experience and educational to boot Dave and his co-worker Kristy were awesome! We got to see and hang out with 4 different birds of prey First was a GYR hawk, very cool, second was a Harris Hawk, with this Hawk, "willow" we were treated to a fly on and landing on each of own hands, with a glove....we were clearly informed on how to handle our portion of the experience...totally professional. The third bird was a perigon falcon and the last was an Eurasian Eagle owl....huge!!! Very impressive. Our host was Dave, very personal and very well versed in his business. Can't say enough nice things about Dave. The way he explained everything and his personal interactions with each of us class people was very helpful. Once again thanks again for the experience

This is a must see experience! Jerry and Dave are fantastic teachers of the history of falconry. The best part is the up close inaction you get by going here. You actually have a raptor land on your gloved hand, surprisingly, the bird was much lighter than I expected. If you love nature and animals, this is the one stop to make on any visit to Catalina island.

And incredible interactive experience with amazing birds. Husband and wife team working to educate about the birds and how they function in the world. This is a must when on Catalina Island

What an amazing experience! Our falconer Dave shared his love for raptors with us and we enjoyed every moment. It was a mix of education and entertainment as we learned about the birds background and benefit to humans over thousands of years of history. I'm going to take my kids when next time we visit the island.

What an incredible experience from start to finish. Dave and his team are so professional and full of knowledge. Their birds are all fascinating and our group walked away amazed at all we learned. Getting to get a taste of being a falconer for a day was awesome! Got some great photos and highly recommend this not to miss experience.

My son chose this experience and while I was excited for it--I didn't know how much our whole group would love it! Everything about the experience was top-notch. We met at a beautiful grassy area that overlooked the water and the harbor. From the moment we arrived, Dave and Gina were welcoming and kind. We got to meet and interact with 5 different birds. They gave us an overview about the animal and the history of the animal in the context of human history (like the role of falconry in the Middle East). You also get to have the chance for the hawk to land on your arm and watch the birds feed. We got lucky and a bald eagle also flew over during our experience. We were part of a Disney Cruise group excursion--but the group was small and we really felt like we had an "exclusive" and "behind the scenes" experiences. Many thanks for Dave and Gina for a wonderful morning getting to see Ruby and the other birds!

Dave was an amazing falconry, educated us about the species of birds they currently have. He respected his birds very well and handle them properly. Healthy beautiful birds. From the eagle Owl to the Gyrfalcon. Love them all definitely worth the experience and to do again as an activity on the island 10 stars

An unforgettable and educational experience! Dave went out of his way to make sure everyone in our group had a meaningful interaction with the birds. My 10-year-old son had an absolute blast, he even made a point to find Dave again later in town! I highly recommend doing this at least once. Not only is it incredibly fun, but it also supports a great cause. A solid 10/10, would absolutely do it again!

What an exhilarating, beautiful experience it was taking part in the Catalina Falconry Experience recently with my best friend! Dave and Gina were both incredibly knowledgeable, humorous and full of compassion & respect for these incredible birds. We enjoyed meeting and interacting with Willow, Ruby, Paxson and Tess who were all amazing sports & stars of the show. We learned so much & are grateful for this epic experience. We would highly recommend!! Book this now!!! Thank you again, Dave & Gina!! Lory & Tova

We spent a good two hours meeting and learning about these beautiful birds. It was an honor to get up close and personal with a Gyr Falcon, a Peregrine Falcon, a Harris Hawk and a Eurasian Eagle Owl, and to delve into Dave's knowledge about these and other birds of prey. It's clear that this is a passion as well as a career for Dave. He speaks about his charges with fondness and humor, and was willing to share information with anyone within earshot. Having participated in a previous falconry experience, we thought we knew what to expect, but were wowed by the variety of birds and the time we could spend close to them. Still feeling the awe and excitement hours later! Side note: the Harris Hawks have a side gig in the community, working as seagull mitigation. Look for them if you're in downtown Avalon!

Hummer Tour Review If you only see Avalon, you've only…read moreexperienced one chapter of Catalina. I think Catalina is one of those places where many visitors never venture beyond Avalon and the beaches. This tour completely broadened my perspective. Our guide, Christian, made the experience exceptional. I love when someone's personal experience complements their professional expertise. He lived off the grid in Hawaii for nearly a decade, and it showed. His knowledge of the terrain, wildlife, plants, and even how to read the landscape came from years of living it, not just memorizing facts. Experience is the best tour guide, and Christian has a lifetime of it. As a hiking enthusiast, the mountains were calling my name. Exploring Catalina's rugged backcountry was the highlight of my visit. My teenager was fascinated to discover the island is so much more than beaches, and my mom found the peacefulness that only nature can provide. Three generations experienced the same tour in completely different ways, and each of us walked away impressed. The 2 1/2-hour tour takes place in an open-air Hummer-style vehicle that seats about nine people. We never got out during the tour, but honestly, I never felt like I was missing anything. The off-roading was exciting, and the time flew by because Christian kept us engaged from beginning to end. We learned so much, not only about the island's wildlife and landscape, but also about the people who have shaped Catalina's history. And that no so good takeover. I won't spoil the stories because discovering them yourself is part of what makes this tour so memorable. Booking was incredibly easy. Reservations were completed online, payment was seamless with a credit card, and when you arrive you'll simply check in and sign a waiver before heading out. The tour starts with a digital reservation but ends with memories that can't be captured on a screen. TIPS: I wouldn't wear white because of the dust. I recommend closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, and comfortable clothing. In July 2026, it was about 75 degrees. The moving vehicle creates plenty of airflow, so a light layer is optional but not necessary. For families, I think children who are naturally curious, enjoy wildlife, and like learning will have a wonderful time. Because it's a small group, it's best suited for kids who enjoy listening, asking questions, and exploring. We saw plentiful bison, horses, and even a dwarf mule. The only thing I didn't get to see was the Airport in the Sky, which had been on my wish list, because our group chose to spend more time exploring the backcountry and searching for wildlife. I have no regrets. The views are so spectacular that words become inefficient. Some places simply have to be experienced. This is one of those tours that might sound ordinary when you read the description, but it's anything but. If you only see Avalon, you've only experienced one chapter of the island. The wild heart of Catalina is waiting just beyond the pavement, and this tour is the best way to discover. BTW, the conservancy offers guided hiking tours and backpacking tours. In October you can have the chance to hike the Trans Catalina Trail 35 miles. Are you in?

They also have a lot of merchandise for sale. Some of the proceeds help support the conservancy and other parks. My wife liked a book on bison that she saw. Unfortunately we didn't purchase it and later she regretted doing so. I contacted the conservancy and spoke to Yesi. She was very nice and helped me to purchase and mail the book to our address. My wife was very surprised and happy to receive it. Yesi took ownership of the purchase and followed through to make it happen. If you are on a cruise or just taking the ferry over to the island, stop by the Catalina Conservancy. It's only a couple of blocks from the docks where the tenders are. Not only is it a worthy cause to support, but they have some great information and merchandise. You won't be disappointed.

There is also a replica of a machine gun placed around the perimeter front entrance. This weapon is a captured German machine gun that was presented to the city of Avalon by the Catalina Island Post 137 of the American Legion. This patch of green grass is called "City Park" in Avalon but is also colloquially referred to as "Machine Gun Park. " Apparently. the history of this island does include quite a bit of war craft, especially during WW II. A story on KCET.org mentioned the intrigue. "Catalina Island nimbly reinvented itself as a training camp for spies, commandos, merchant marines, Coast Guard recruits, and other uniformed service members. Vacant hotels became barracks. Empty marinas, yacht clubs, and even the Chicago Cubs' spring training ballpark were transformed into simulated wa rzones. Engineered by the Wrigley family, which controlled much of the island, the tactic saved Catalina from economic disaster."
