C.A.R.A. "Citizens for Animal Rescue & Adoption" A " No Kill Animal Shelter" is totally staffed…read moreby volunteers from our community! Over the last couple of years they have taken in hundreds of stray and owner surrendered Animals. Some of them injured, sick, or abused by their owners, many thrown along the roadside or dumped in a field. The caring and dedicated volunteers give their time to care for these homeless pets till they have a second chance for adoption. The work here is performed every day, 365 days a year, chores include cleaning litter pans, providing medical care, feeding and bathing, walking dogs, scooping poop, mopping floors..you get the idea, it's hard and sometimes nasty work, but someone has to do it. The team of volunteers all love Animals many of them have adopted or rescued homeless cats & dogs themselves, still they give of themselves for this worthwhile cause. Without the support of these caring individuals, most of the hundreds of pets would have ended up being impounded, where their fate usually ends with being euthanized. C.A.R.A. "No Kill" Animal Shelter is licensed by the State of Illinois, a not for profit c503 agency that derives it's funding through the donations from friends of C.A.R.A. and the support of local businesses. Additionally funds are raised trough monthly low cost vaccination clinics as well as their low cost spay/neuter program. If you feel you would like to help our homeless friends, you can, volunteers are always welcome, contribute whatever time your available, hey they have flexible hours. Not able to volunteer? They still need YOU, perhaps you are able to donate items for the thrift store, anything in usable condition, of course there is always a need for cash for the purchase dog & cat food, cat litter, cleaning products, buy vaccines, to cover veterinary costs and the list goes on.... I cannot speak highly enough of this organization. They are a non-profit, no kill shelter for cats…read moreand dogs. I have personally adopted two dogs from HART over the past several years and these animals are two of the kindest, most gentle creatures on the planet. The description of the dogs' struggles and strengths was accurately described by staff. Both were well adjusted and people friendly. The shelter itself is clean and the dogs appear well taken care of. Staff stayed in the room with me as I met the dog to answer questions and to see the relationship between myself and the dogs. The application is available online and it can be pre-approved before you even see a dog. This really cuts down on the disappointment that the dog you were interested in might be adopted by someone else while they determine your suitability. With both dogs, we were sent home with the heartworm medication that had been started at the shelter. For one of my dogs, that was almost three months of medication. My dogs were both fixed and fully vaccinated. They were both chipped. The adoption fee was a little under $200. Some might feel that is a lot for a mutt a few years old. I'm here to tell you I actually wrote a check for my dogs that exceeded the adoption fee because I was so very grateful for the way they run their business. I want HART to continue to have the ability to to flourish and grow. PetSmart sometimes features their animals during their adoption events in store. You can also give donations to HART at PetSmart during some points in the year. Consider supporting them with your donations and adoptions. It is well worth it.

Stay away from this unprofessional dog rescue. They are clearly so busy going to farmer's markets…read moreto sell dog treats that they can't get back to the folks that want to adopt their dogs. We started the adoption process because we saw a beautiful dog on petfinder.com that we fell head over heels for. We submitted our information, and when I didn't hear anything for a week, I called to leave messages as well as emails. It took two weeks to finally have someone call me. The people that run this place, claim that the lack of professionalism in responding to simple phone calls and emails, is the fact that they run a small operation. Whatever, all I know is that they strung me along for over two weeks, and when they finally called our references (this past Saturday), the puppy that I was looking to adopt had already been adopted 4 days earlier! I found out on facebook, when I was checking out their page to see when they were having a fundraiser, when they had a great picture of somebody with the puppy I thought would be mine. I'm going to have to stop writing this review, as the tears are getting on the keyboard.

I'm 85, so you know I am extremely happy with the competence and care all our dogs (and cats) have received. I have found warm and welcoming professionals from the receptionists, vet techs, and veterinarians throughout the many years I have been coming to this vet practice. The same has been true since Dr. Davis retired and Dr. Stoerger has continued the practice. Every time I've had to make that awful decision a pet owner often faces, I have been supported and eased through euthanizing a beloved furry member of our family, this practice has supported me with their combined veterinary skills, their empathy, and their understanding for my loss. My most recent experience in dealing with my Murphy's struggle with cancer, I was able to get through it with their support and caring. Dr. Stoerger came to my home with a vet tech and told me to let her know when I was ready. (You're not ever really "ready" to lose your friend and companion, but you know it's the last caring thing you can do for them, and I was given the gift of Dr. Stoerger's understanding and empathy for my loss. She has cared for Murphy, my beagle mix, from 2012 when I adopted him until his recent euthanasia. When the mass was discovered in his lung, she told me of the cancer division at U. Of I. Veterinarian Medical School, who were wonderful as well. When I took him there, she shared his medical records with them. In his illness and euthanasia, she was so tender with him--and with me--that I felt comforted, and I know Murphy was as well.
