I know a few things about engines on mowers, motorcycles and cars. Im getting up there in age and…read moreI make enough money to have others repair things for me now. I brought an older lawnboy to Gruel Bros on main street in Crown Point. The engine froze up and wouldn't start. I decided to go in and check on it because they had it for two weeks and hadnt called yet. They said "Bad news man, you are going to need a new mower. The engine seized." He rolled it out and showed me the dip stick. Well the oil was barely touching the dipstick but wasnt completely bone dry like they said. I took it home, pulled the plug and put about two table spoons of oil right into the cylinder. With the plug still out, I turned the blade, which turned extremely easily considering other engines I repaired long ago, were a little stiffer at first. I filled it with fresh 30 weight oil and put the plug in. The rope pulled with ease. I Primed it and the engine started like new on the second pull. The sign in front of Gruel Bros says they repair lawn boys. Buyer beware when you buy something from them or have something repaired there. Their service dept is terrible and they appear to have rather sold a new mower to me then fixed mine in the 10 minutes it took me to fix it. The crazy part is they were the last to service mine last year and this was the first time I used it this year so I may have had 5 cut jobs on a small lot I use it for. It really never ran properly after the first time i brought it in but i figured they would repair the issue from the last visit. The rpms were not high enough and the engine putted instead of running at a higher rpm. That is a simple fix too. Moral of the story... do not bring anything to them, do not buy their used machines and stay away from their new stuff because one day they may have to service it for you. My father used to say you can't fix stupid!

They could be the best! Could be! I brought my lawn mower in for tuneup and repair. I got it back…read moreand it ran great. But the wheels were stuck. Like gunked on. They never bothered to check to see if the wheels worked. And their attitude stinks. Yea they are old school. But I thought old school was suppose to be better then new school. The worse part is if you're a brand new customer. Which I was. Because they expect you to know things without being told. For example, I called after they had it for a week or more to inquire about the status. They barked that they hadn't gotten to it yet and would call when they did. Like ok, dude! Just checking up. Gruel - just do better!

This place is great for service and small engines. Very friendly people…read more I brought in my new Craftsman leaf blower, (as it broke down after 3 uses, that's another issue) for warranty repair. Greg, the owner of the shop said he would repair it while I waited, as I was coming from the City, he even sent me to a great restaurant down the street (Rita's). He fixed it and even dropped it off at the restaurant! I can't say enough positive things about this business!

I called Greg's about repairing a broken front-wheel drive cable on a Toro Recycler. I was told over the phone it could be repaired and that it was a simple fix. When I got the mower back nearly three weeks later, I was hit with a bill for $310 and change, more than half the cost of a new mower, same make and model. The bill included several miscellaneous charges that I never authorized. Nor was I ever contacted about whether I wanted those additional services performed. The additional charges: oil change, new spark plug, air filter, blade sharpening, and new wheels. When I take my car into be serviced for one problem and the mechanic finds an additional problem, I am contacted and asked whether I want the additional work performed, and I get a cost estimate. No assumptions are made about what I am willing to pay for. In this case, if I had known the total cost of the repairs to be done, I would've declined having them done and looked into a new mower. Granted, Greg's did reduce the bill by $50 after I expressed my displeasure with their lack of professionalism, but the repair costs are still slightly more than half the price of a new mower. When using Greg's be sure to get a cost estimate up front and spell out the work to be done.
