We took the family here as our first time eating there, and we have never been more disappointed or embarrassed with the food - especially after hyping it up to the parents just how good this place is supposed to be. We all began with a sharer starter which consisted of Glamorgan sausages, olives, chorizo, dipping bread, and (I forgot the name) bacon wrapped around prunes/dates. Most of this was pretty tasty in all fairness, besides the olives which for some reason seemed to be pickled, or at least heavily doused in something acidic - these were not nice at all and not what we expected when ordered. This was all fairly tame and not much of an issue. The mains however... Two of us, including myself, had the pork belly. The menu only mentioned that there was going to be pork belly, purple sprouting. cider gravy and black pudding. What arrived was a big plate of unpleasant surprises. There was a few sprigs of *regular* broccoli sprouting, which was hidden amongst all the less desirable asparagus - neither of these are substitutes for purple sprouting! The potatoes were drowned in what seemed like half a jar of mustard - even if I did like mustard, this would have been way too much and killed whatever other flavour was there; having some with the pork still tasted overpowering. The gravy was very sparse and didn't give add much moisture or flavour to the pork. The pork skin/crackling was really thin and chewy instead of being crunchy. To give credit where it's due, the pork was quite nice, it just needed some gravy and more attention to its crackling. The flavours on this plate just generally did not mingle well at all. Also we didn't realise that we were not given black pudding until 2 thirds of the way through our meal. Cobbles did compensate us with free cake as desert so I will not knock them for the black pudding. Unfortunately this doesn't make up for the rest of this disastrous meal. One of us had the 'white' (why not just say the fish?) fish and chips. This was largely fine apart from the triple cooked chips. These chips looked like beastly wedges of quartered potatoes, and go figure, they were really under cooked and firm in their centres and the skins were not very crisp. Triple fried chips done wrong is quite an impressive feat for the Welsh Restaurant of the Year... My partner had the vegan to-fish which we all agreed was the most miserable dish out of all of us. The chips were the same as previously mentioned, but the 'to-fish' was just a huge slab of tasteless, un-marinated, unpressed tofu wrapped in a sheet of seaweed (forgive the lack of proper name for the seaweed, my memory can't recall). Granted, the seaweed tasted kind of fishy, but it did not cut through and balance well with the big watery sponge of tofu. It seemed like a really poor effort on what was an attempt at a vegan fish and chips. We appreciate the inclusiveness of vegan items on the menu, but please do not put something so slap-dash and tasteless on there. As feedback we suggest battering or frying the tofu, or perhaps do a battered mushy pea fritter instead which we have known some chippies to do. But as it is, it is just an expensive and tasteless insult. Just an additional note, we were sat right next to the kitchen's music speaker. It was quite deafening for my partner who was sat there, and couldn't make out the conversation we were having after being blasted with Linkin Park in one ear, and Ed Sheeran in the other. Not all bad though! The service was lovely, and the cakes were delicious. Including the vegan Oreo cake (you really wouldn't know it was vegan). I will always credit a restaurant for sourcing their meat locally and free range too. If this restaurant becomes honest with their customers by coming clean with what is out of stock and what will be on the plate when the food arrives, then maybe this could have been a 3 star review. Tweaks to the vegan menu is much needed also.

The fruit and vegetables are always beautiful and fresh, the meats are produced there on site and are delicious and nicely priced. The speciality sausages are lovely and there is stacks of other produce too, all local. Things like bread, cheese, eggs, icecream, cakes, preserves and much more. Not only is it a farm shop but also the best carvery in the area. The carvery is also a cafe and they do breakfasts and light lunches as well as hot food on non-carvery days. Get there early though (half eleven) if planning a carvery as the queues are huge!

It was early so I was a little worried they would only be serving breakfast but I was so happy when they said I could get what I wanted. I wanted the Welsh Rarebit and the Glamorgan sausages. I had never tried either before. The Welsh Rarebit was amazing. Thick bread and the cheese mixture was so good. I could have eaten it all. I may have to try to make it when I go home. I had no idea what to expect with the Glamorgan sausages. No meat. Just cheese, leeks and breadcrumbs deep fried. I tried it and for Americans, it tasted just like Thanksgiving stuffing! Good, homemade thanksgiving stuffing. It was a surprise. Really good. My friend got scrambled eggs and toast. She liked it. She also got an iced coffee that she loved. The ladies working were wonderful and we chatted about our trip. They were on top of everything. It was such a cute place. Well worth the drive out of city center.

I'm a big fan of delis so was very excited to check this one out. They sold a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, pasta, fresh bread, and some incredibly unusual spices which we were aloud to try out. I purchased some olives which whilst weren't the best I've ever had (nothing could compete with fresh olives in Italy), were jolly good. Sticking with the French theme Snails also offers weekly French conversations, which I'm told are very popular. A Fabulous cafe and deli, Snails is a real little treat for locals and those visiting the area, oh and be sure to check out their little garden outside (very cute).

We were heading back to London the next day, and at first thought "too bad this isn't on our way home," but the next morning decided we wanted to see more of the park anyway, as well as a few other points north before our weeklong adventure adjourned... What a pleasure it was to stop here on that dreary morning! When we arrived around 10:30am, the whole place was bustling with what turned out to be a tour group of retirees, about to tour the historic adjacent mill. The setup is counter service style: order your items, take your number and choose a table (indoors or outdoors). Most of the indoor tables overlook the brook running through the mill; the outdoor tables are in the courtyard of the mill buildings. They don't have a true breakfast, per se, but they have teas, coffee/espresso drinks, breads, cakes and cookies available all day, most of which are made using grains locally harvested and milled right there. There are some gluten free options available as well. At 11:30, their lunch menu is available and features sandwiches, soup and salads, all made from locally sourced, processed and grown Welsh foods. We were still finishing up our morning coffee, enjoying the chill vibe of the place (especially after the tour group moved on - haha!) by the time lunch was available, so we decided to stick around a little longer and try it out too! After much deliberation about how to best sample their offerings (everything sounded AMAZING), we opted for a soup/sandwich combo with the ham, cheese & mustard sandwich and fresh garden pea and mint soup, along with a "board" that included salad, two cheeses, local ham, an apple, fresh cherry tomatoes, house chutney and fresh bread. So simple, but so delicious!! We ate it ALL... I can't recommend enough the sheer quality of this real, simple but delicious local food. Other items to note: Credit cards require a £10 minimum charge. Locally made gifts and gourmet food items are available for purchase. Restroom entrance is in the courtyard, but there are public toilets in the adjacent building, facing the street as well. Free Wi-Fi. Check out the Talgarth Mill Craft Shop next door if you are looking for locally made Welsh treasures to take home. Free parking (and recycling drop-off) is available a couple of short blocks away, just off the highway. The Talgarth visitor's centre across the street is there for all kinds of information about the area, or, if you'd just like to converse with the friendly locals.

I don't normally eat breakfast and got the Granola. It was fine--your typical yogurt, granola, and berries. It was tart, crunchy, and sweet--they provide a side of honey. I had half and gave the rest away because I wasn't hungry. Also ordered were the Bubble and Squeak and Fruit Pancakes. Oh my gosh, I had multiple bites of the Bubble and Squeak because it was so good! If I were hungrier I'd order this for myself. It's a delicious harmony of savory filling goodness. Great place for a bunch of girls to meet for brunch (as was most of the clientele when we arrived for brunch before we headed out to go castle hunting for the day. The food selections are limited to sandwiches and salads as it is a cafe but they do a great job with the menu. We had: - two capuccinos - one chorizo and chicken wrap: tasted mexican and was recommended by the owner - one breakfast toastie: came with a delicious salsa The total was about 13 quid and the atmosphere makes you not want to leave.
