We stayed across from this fire station, apparently the oldest in Paris, for a week. As some background, my friend was obsessed with this & was hoping to check out what French firefighters were all about.
From what I can tell, they are a cool bunch. While we were in Paris, there was some commemoration in front of Hotel-Ville that had to do with firefighters. They had antique engines manned by retired firefighters, a band and an appearance by the Firefighters Gymnastic Team. You heard me - they have a gymnastic team - and they were really good.
Our last day was on the Paris Semi, which passed right down Rue St Antoine. Even though it was cold, windy and pouring rain, the whole engine company turned out to cheer on the runners. They were out there for hours, yelling "Allez!" and giving high fives. They made my friend's vacation more than memorable! read more
