Nightcat True Crime Tours - City-County building

Nightcat True Crime Tours

Downtown

Morbid curiosity got the best of me when Facebook recommended an event for a walking tour of true…read morecrimes in the downtown Salt Lake City area. I don't consider myself a true crime expert, but I am drawn to folklore and mystery. So I snagged my friend to join me and we were signed up for later that evening. The price is a little steep-$30 per person, plus (ugh) online fees. But when I learned that this is a one-man show founded by a charismatic ex-radio personality (thanks, Covid), I was happy to support him. Its obvious he has put in a lot of time and effort to get this endeavor up and running. Or, um, walking. He plans to expand to a van in the future to allow tours in all weather. The pace of the tour is very comfortable. We walked about a mile and a half but it was very doable. Bring water, especially when it's hot outside and wear proper shoes. He sends an email with parking and meet up directions-they are easy to follow. Plan to pay five bucks to park, unless you find street parking during free hours. Anyway, I won't give away all the details of the stops, but we visited five locations where crimes have occurred-one as recent as 2016. Jackson, or Nightcat as he calls himself, told us the stories and sprinkled in just the right amount of eeriness with facts to make it both intriguing and educational. He did not exaggerate or try to make the stories more unbelievable than they were on their own. He also shared tidbits of information on other buildings around the area-leaving me wanting to learn more. I would love to listen to him talk more about the history of our town-he has done his research. I hope that he expands his tour offerings-I could see him doing lots of cool routes.

Very well done! Heard he has another tour he offers and hope to do that as well!

Ice Castles - Fire show

Ice Castles

We had a great time!…read more First and foremost dress for the weather and most definitely wear snow boots. The ground is icy and slushy and uneven. I even suggest wool socks to keep your toes warm. Snow pants are also ideal too if have them. We went at 4:30pm so we got to see the ice castles both during the day and at night as the sun went down around 5:45/6pm. By 6pm it was getting very crowded and hard to walk through but it was so fun seeing it all lit up. We did the sleigh ride. Our driver was excellent! He was very informative and told funny jokes. I forgot his name but he made the freezing cold sleigh ride a lot more fun! I didn't realize that the sleigh ride had lights throughout so we barely got to see those since it was still light out. But it was still neat. We paid for the souvenir photo and you get one printed out, and the others emailed to you. They have a small gift shop at the end and to be honest I wish they had one at the front selling the hand warmers because I would have bought some! But having them available for purchase at the end wasn't helpful in my opinion. They had a small stand for hot cocoa and bite sized goodies to snack on, but because it was the only place to purchase the lines were awfully long. I would suggest opening another food truck up or something to encourage more people to purchase. I would have loved a hot cocoa to stay warm. They had a few small propane fire pits throughout to stand and warm up. They had a few ice slides for the kids to go on and one for adults too. That was neat. There were several ice tunnels to walk through and they get crowded. It would be nice if they had them going one way routes because they tended to get backed up with people trying to get through in the opposite direction. There were ice sculptures like a unicorn and a throne. There are trivial facts throughout that inform you of how the ice castles are made, how many artisans it takes to make them, how many pounds of ice, etc. Overall we really enjoyed the experience. I'd love to go again, but I also think it could be a do once experience.

I've wanted to go to the Ice Castles for years and so glad I finally did! My boyfriend and I went…read moreon an off-peak day and it was totally worth it. There were pretty much no lines and the amount of people there and parking was super manageable. Be sure to bundle up and wear good shoes with traction. We loved watching the fire show and going down their ice slide.

Grimm Ghost Tours - Meet me by the Kissing Tree... haunted site downtown SLC

Downtown

This was a fun tour with an unexpected scary element toward the end...even scared our guide!…read moreThe downtown tour, which -bonus- started just walking distance from my hotel! Takes you on an informative ride through downtown with step off points, and a trip to the cemetary. They provide ghost detector devices that do go off and show activity in different areas. They warn you at the beginning that you probably won't see a ghost, but they remind you to check your photos, as sometimes you will see them in your photos. It's possible someone on our tour got something as the guide was telling the guest to submit her photo. Now for the scary part! As we were riding along a narrow road with sharp turns, listening to our guide tell us of a newly wed couple that haunts the area after a horrific crash on this very road! Suddenly the van scraped roadside bushes and swerved slightly, making us all gasp!!! Pretty sure the guide who was facing backward had to change his shorts! The driver apologized saying she was trying to avoid rough areas. It was PERFECT!! And incredibly timed!!

Grimm Ghost Stories does a good job of taking you around the city. It's a short tour of getting in and out of their van. You will then walk to the "Grimm" site, and the host will then tell you about the tragedy that took place at that very spot. There were only a handful of stops and I didn't I think they were ghostly just sad.
