Armory Park Inn has a lot of potential, but unfortunately our experience left something to be…read moredesired, and I would not choose to stay here again. I really wanted to like this place. The inn itself is a charming historic home in downtown Tucson. The neighborhood felt quiet, and was a convenient location for exploring the area. We stayed in the Pennington Room, which was comfortable overall, and there were several aspects of the property we genuinely enjoyed. Unfortunately, our check-in experience overshadowed the rest of our stay. We booked and prepaid our reservation through Priceline, which is a common booking method for travelers. Before our trip (July 1-5), I called the inn on June 20 to confirm our reservation, let them know we would be arriving late, and request a breakfast basket for the following morning since we planned to sleep in. They confirmed everything, including our reservation, breakfast request, and even provided our door codes. When we arrived that evening, we were locked out. I called the owner, who answered, but told me Priceline had canceled our reservation. The next 45 minutes to an hour consisted of multiple phone calls, requests for my payment information, and confusion over whether we even had a room. Eventually, after speaking with the manager, they acknowledged the issue was on their end and let us into our room. After traveling all day in the Arizona summer heat, it was frustrating to arrive at a room that had not been prepared for our arrival. The air conditioning had not been turned on, the room was extremely warm, and the sheets had black streaks on them that looked like ink marks. The breakfast basket we had requested in advance was also missing. The following morning, I contacted Priceline directly. They confirmed my reservation had never been canceled and that everything was correct on their end. Later, the explanation from the inn changed from "Priceline canceled your reservation" to "Priceline provided us with an invalid virtual payment card." Regardless of where the payment issue originated, it was concerning that we were repeatedly asked about payment after already prepaying, and I wanted written confirmation that we would not be charged a second time at checkout. Thankfully, the inn did provide that reassurance, and we did not experience any additional billing issues. My impression is that the property struggles with third-party bookings. If you plan to stay here, I would recommend booking directly through the inn rather than through a travel site to hopefully avoid a similar experience. Once the check-in issues were resolved, our stay was generally peaceful. However, the staff continued bringing up the reservation problem during breakfast each morning and repeatedly told us they wanted to treat us like "normal guests," which unintentionally kept reminding us of the difficult start to our stay. Breakfast ended up being one of the highlights of our visit. We were told the first morning's breakfast was not up to their usual standard because they had not been expecting us due to the reservation confusion. Even so, it was delicious. Each morning included fresh pastries and a yogurt parfait topped with fresh fruit and honey. While the parfait remained consistent each day, the hot breakfast changed and gave us the opportunity to try different dishes. One morning featured chile eggs that were especially delicious. Every breakfast also included a simple arugula salad with balsamic vinaigrette, which was a nice, fresh addition. Throughout the day, guests also had access to complimentary refreshments, including Nespresso coffee, spring water, and Pepperidge Farm cookies available 24 hours a day. The breakfasts and hospitality in this regard were definitely a standout part of the experience. The property itself has its strengths. The bathrooms are nicely updated, the room was refreshed daily, the water pressure was good, and housekeeping kept everything smelling clean. Just note that the standard refresh service does not include changing the sheets each day. Because it is a historic home, the room stayed fairly warm, and while the shower had good water pressure, the temperature never became especially hot or cold. The television also only offered DirecTV, so if you're accustomed to streaming services or a smart TV, that's something to be aware of. Overall, the inn is charming, the breakfasts were excellent, and it's located in a great neighborhood. However, the disorganized check-in process and inconsistent communication made what should have been a relaxing vacation start on a stressful note.

I had an amazing pina colada mock tail & My favorite thing I ate was the omelet at the omelet station. I was so sad I couldn't finish it. I love the live music component but feel it needs to be revised so that it could be heard inside as well. The bbq portion had a good amount of options which was cool but I felt the meat was bland. The veggies and sides were better. Our server was friendly and on Top of our needs. I will say I was disappointed at the "seafood" & "dessert" section that was so small you miss it if you blink. I feel there should be more offerings and better quality the dessert. The one pictured tasted like the fruit out of a gelatin fruit cup and the chocolate chip cookies were rock hard. I'm not sure I would regularly pay $70 for this buffet offering but it's a cool thing to try since there's not too much competition for this in Tucson..

Comfortable Bed, Dusty Room, Dangerous Stairs, Dilapidated Furniture -…read moreWe stayed in 'Uncle Duke's Room'. The king bed & pillows proved to be one of the most comfortable of any of the hotels we stayed at for the 2 weeks we toured Arizona - including the luxury hotels! (topped only by the bed at Grand Canyon's Thunderbird Lodge - see our other reviews if interested) That's a big plus for this B&B. I was dismayed at the layer of fine dust over every surface - including the tops of the night stands which anyone would be bound to notice. There were a couple of dead flies on the window sills - in plain sight when we went to turn on the air conditioning - which rattled gustily but worked. I was happy to sit in the leather wing chair & prop my feet up on the ottoman with the a/c blasting away but my husband couldn't get comfortable on either side of the room due to the a/c by the chair & the wobbly table & broken lamp sitting in front of the a/c on the other side. He was also turned off by the stuffing showing through the cracked leather. The bare wall facing the bed with the wall mounted fan & large TV & cables stole some of the room's charm too. Despite us both being ~ 6' tall, the bedroom ceiling was fine. We thought our bathroom was across a private hall - ie no one else would see us but its in front of another bedroom & visible to all visitors to the floor. The sharp slant of the shower made taking a shower impossible for either of us. I tried taking a tub bath the first night & the last morning but despite letting the water run for 20 mins - there was NO hot or warm water to be had. The sink's hot water supply was almost instant. My husband's clearest memory is the difficulty navigating the corner of the staircase to our 2nd level bedroom. The staircase has a sharp turn to the left; 3 treads fan from a 2" barely there width to tippy toe only width against the wall - too big a distance to just skip over. The room had a keurig machine altho sparse supplies - which was fine - we travel with our own. The mini frig was a welcome sight. My husband went down to the exterior building that houses the kitchen both mornings for a bite to eat - which he enjoyed. The hostess was friendly & very chatty. We did have trouble finding the house when we arrived after dark - couldn't see any house numbers but a nice neighbor pointed us to the correct house. Parking is on the street right in front. The price was inexpensive at $120/night. Having a comfortable night's rest is so important but there were too many negatives that are management-oriented for us to recommend this hotel.

While inquiring about the facilities and then leading-up to (and even during) our stay, Colin and Roy's communication was professional, informative and timely every time. Once we arrived, a welcome packet was waiting for us. It outlined the various amenities that were supplied, an explanation of the grounds, a breakfast menu, and their favorite local restaurants that were either vegan or catered heavily to vegans. At one point during the correspondence, my boyfriend mentioned that we would be visiting during his birthday month, and that detail was not missed. Waiting on the dining table was a fresh bouquet of flowers and a birthday card. The rooms were spotless, the shower was amazing and the living space was very comfortable, almost like home. They even supplied some vegan reading material along with information about the local sights. Also, Colin and Roy tried to make Rancho Vegano as environmentally friendly as possible (which I applaud), from the bamboo sheets to the silverware. The only "gripe" we had, was the silverware. While eco responsible, it was a bit flimsy when trying to use and I was worried that I'd break the forks. They acknowledged the feedback and they mentioned that they'll probably switch to metal silverware in the future. Each morning we were entertained by local wildlife as we had our delicious and fluffy blueberry pancakes and a breakfast burrito stuffed with veggies with chipotle sour cream and a side of fruit. Both meals were delicious and kept us full for our day's journeys. There were a few occasions where I got to talk with Roy as he was tending to their grounds. Listening to their backstory and journey to veganism, their passion and dreams for what they want Rancho Vegano to evolve to is quite infectious. I can't wait to see how they expand Rancho Vegano. On our last morning, Colin and Roy invited us to have our breakfast up on their rooftop deck. The view was amazing and was the perfect start for our journey home. They also baked us fresh banana bread for the road, which was thoroughly devoured. Our only regret was not staying there longer, but it gives us an excuse to venture back. Rancho Vegano is slice of paradise in East Tucson and we look forward to our next stay.

Looking for the royal treatment? For just a little more than it costs to stay at a standard hotel,…read moreyou can find it at the exclusive Hacienda Linda. This bed and breakfast, located next to the Saguaro Forest outside of town, has only two bedrooms. You get one, and your hosts, Dan and Linda, take the other, and do everything to make your stay pleasant. The beautifully decorated house and wonderful land is at your disposal. We rented the hacienda for our wedding and Dan and Linda went out of their way to create a special atmosphere. Not only did they re-landscape the property to accommodate our ceremony and party, painstakingly relocating dozens of penstemons and cactus and cutting back the undergrowth to prevent unintended encounters with wildlife, they even got the phone company to remove some old telephone poles they thought might spoil the view. Our guests enjoyed a heavenly vision of the moon rising over the Tucson mountains as we said our vows. Dan and Linda took care of all the rentals, getting the tables, linens, and other necessities, coordinated with the caterers, and offered valet parking to our guests. They don't host too many weddings, so count yourself lucky if they agree to do yours. Also, be pretty specific about the details. There was, at times, some confusion regarding what they had agreed to do and what we needed to hire others to do. Ultimately, however, our wedding was just perfect. You couldn't ask for a more beautiful location: it's a paragon of the Sonoran Dessert. In the morning, Linda will bring you coffee or tea, as you choose, and Dan will cook breakfast at whatever time you require, to any taste or dietary restriction. If you enjoy dogs, their lovely pets, Bella and Gomez, will clamor for your attention and make you feel special. (If you do not enjoy dogs, they will be restricted to another room.) Take your breakfast in the garden, where hundreds of birds (in season) will hop around for your delight. We saw a hummingbird during our wedding reception, and quails, cardinals, doves, and woodpeckers while we ate omelets and potatoes. Hacienda Linda offers guests a private, magical desert retreat, a short drive from the city.

It was our first time staying at a B & B instead of a hotel so we were a bit nervous. But the innkeeper, Caroline, made us feel comfortable right away. Our two nights there was like home away from home. We learned that Paca de Paja means "house of strawbale" in Spanish because that's what the house is actually made of. It makes the home eco-friendly and, of course, different. The natural landscape surrounding the house is breathtaking and the critters that inhabit around there are interesting, like the rock squirrels. The interior of the home is quite quaint. The decor reveals much thoughtfulness and creativity. It is a mixture of country living and native American culture. We felt like we were wrapped up with great comfort the whole time we were there. Caroline paid attention to us as well as to the details of our stay. She provided a healthy breakfast catered to our liking and surprised us with freshly squeezed orange juice. She's a gracious and hospitable host. Paca de Paja is an experience in itself. We planned to return as soon as we left. It's hard to believe that no one had Yelped about this place yet. I'm happy to be the first, but I can't help thinking that I just gave up a well kept secret...

The pools are nice and the gym is also very well maintained. As well, its super close to a lot of nice nearby amenities, though it's a bit of a drive to go into Tucson proper. However, there are no cameras. I did have an incident where my car was damaged on the property- intentionally- and the staff/hotel couldn't help at all. If you have any property you care about, I wouldn't bring it here. As well, since the residents and other guests are older, I admittedly get a very "conservative" vibe from them. If you're openly not that, it becomes less friendly.
