The space is small and intimate, with photos aplenty hung all over the the walls. The staff was so welcoming and warm. We came on a Wednesday evening and it was obvious that most of the patrons were regulars. The host made sure to check in multiple times to see how we were doing as well as to provide some history about the place. You can expect a live band from 6:30-9pm with a 30 minute intermission in between. A quartet (bass, drums, saxophone, and trombone) played the night we were there, and it was great. During the intermission, dinner is provided for purchase from the kitchen in the back. They had a few options, all for $10. My friend and I shared fish and chips, and turkey chili with cornbread. I was quite impressed with how much the two chefs were able to accomplish in such a small space. TLDR: Come for great jazz and affordable food, all while supporting a neighborhood nonprofit. They do other kinds of social services in the office through the main glass doors. To make donations, drive around to the unloading area at the back right and ask for help (knock on the metal door). Here's their description: "serves TP/SS families in need with food, clothing and house ware assistance, as well as various workforce skill trainings. ACSGW will gladly take donations of clothing, shoes, accessories, linens, small appliances, kitchen/household items, toys, home décor, books, flat screens, and laptops (less than 5 years old). No furniture, child car seats, strollers, printers, and nonworking items. I liked that I did not have to purchase any supplies for this class. Now keep in mind you only come with what you brought; no brushes, paper, or paints were given away at the end. We had a small group and started off practicing watercolor techniques the first day and then jumped into small simple projects; still life, landscape, and abstract watercolors. As a beginner, I was in class with people who were professional artists who took the class as a hobby. I would have preferred to be in a class with newbies like me, so I could spend more time learning technique. But all and all I worked at my own pace and did not allow myself to be distracted by the years of experience of others. Our instructor Tye was kind, encouraging, and fun to work with. I would take another course here, they have plenty to choose from ceramics, printmaking, even a soap making course, and much more. Looking to be creative and meet some interesting people on a random weeknight, this might be your jam.

The Pyramid Atlantic Art Center is a nonprofit center specializing in papermaking, printmaking, and book arts. It was founded in 1981, but more recently it moved into the historic Arcade building in the Hyattsville Gateway Arts District. They offer artist residencies, studios for artists, workshops, instruction, artist talks, and other events, including classes for the public. They sell pieces - large and small - and they have a small shop where they sell prints, cards, and other items. If I lived nearby and had the slightest artistic talent, I'd want to spend time at Pyramid. What a great resource for people who make art and love art in the Hyattsville area! There were 42 of us all volunteering to create and pack boxes of assorted canned/packaged food for 1.5 hours, followed by a tour of the facility. The place is HUGE and feeds 1 million people annually and some 60 million meals. While I didn't stick around for the tour, I will volunteer again. It was a phenomenal and rewarding experience knowing we were preparing food to feed the food-insecure throughout the DMV.

Casey Trees is easily the most…read morewell-run nonprofit I've ever volunteered with - they make you feel valued, teach you interesting things, feed you great food and give you a chance to get your hands dirty - what else could you want?! Casey Trees holds a ton of free classes (topics include Bug Identification, Trees 101, Invasive Species) in their Brookland space and volunteer events (Planting, Tree Surveys, Nature Walks) throughout DC. Anywhere trees are, basically :) The events change seasonally to keep up with the changes in the trees needs so there's always more to learn and do - if you're in DC I highly recommend getting involved!

If you are looking to plant a tree in your yard, they're a great place to start, and can even help you find money to do it. Their volunteer events--plantings, inventories, etc.--are always well-run. Besides the actual work, my favorite thing is that they always have a great spread of food for people who come. They also have some great classes, offering general info and practical skills such as pruning.
