The restaurant's namesake Ermilia Galvan Sanchez (Doña Emi) started selling tamales from a cart in the 1960s; her granddaughter Carmen has taken on the lead role at the shop. Tamales Doña Emi is a window stand with seating out front under an awning. It's homey and comfortable and totally casual. And the service was friendly and lovely and quick, too. Their menu is incredible; they offer so many different tamales - sweet, savory, vegetarian... They were creative but completely delicious. We tried several: lomo con aceitunas (pork loin with olives); huitlacoche con queso de cabra (huitlacoche with goat cheese); frijol con queso y chapulines (beans, cheese, and grasshoppers with salsa morita); and higo (fig - a sweet tamal). I have eaten a lot of tamales in my life: some good and some not so good. But all of these tamales were sensational. Every single one. And as if that weren't enough - we tried some of their champurrado (a chocolate-based atole - a drink made from masa). Surprise surprise - also delicious. I'd try anything at Tamales Doña Emi. It was the Emmolada Platter that included three pieces of tortillas filled with pollo, and then it was baked with mole. Then they added crema queso with some added plátanos, onions, and elantro. My platter was prepared with care, and it looked so beautiful, I almost felt guilty to take a bite out of it. It tasted amazing for a dish that was so new to me. They offer a solid selection of mezcals, including labels like Koch and Amarás. While the food may not be the main attraction, it complements the experience perfectly. During our visit, we ordered the classic Pan de Muerto, Pan de Muerto with guava, classic flan, pina colada and fried sweet plantains. The fried plantains were absolutely delicious, and the classic Pan de Muerto was fresh and flavorful. The standout dessert, however, was the flan, which was simply out of this world. Based on the timing and day you visit there might be a wait at the short line, but its totally worth it. If you enjoy lively venues, great music, and a vibrant atmosphere, this place is definitely for you. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and attentive, while the interior is beautifully decorated and full of character.
