One thing people underestimate New York on (among many) is the tight knit nature of their neighborhoods. Casa boasts miles of stacks of exotic and imported magazines, as well as fan favorites. Tons of travel mags, science mags, LGBTQ mags. Science fiction, architecture, design/vintage/antiques. Magazines from other countries and other continents. Other languages. Tons of gorgeous photos and brilliant colors. Magazines that aren't just for the recycling bin . . . magazines that you keep around for the beauty, or for your coffee table, or to keep in your guest room to wow your guests. Things I had never heard of before, yet couldn't wait to read. Would also be a great place to find Is Casa expensive? By the everyday standard, yes. Do they carry exotic and imported magazines that you might not find elsewhere? Yes. Do they have that neighborhood vibe, where you feel like the owners are going to invest in you and get to know you? Where, if you have a special request, they will try to accommodate? Yes. Another thing people don't realize about New York is how capitalism and investment firms are ruining small businesses, attempting to wipe all of the character and grittiness from Manhattan. Casa Magazines is a well-known village magazine Mecca, most recently sold by its owner of 30 years, thankfully to what appears to be local people. I am glad they are helping keep that local flavor. I automatically felt at home upon entering Casa Magazines. The owners made sure to help me throughout my shopping spree. In fact, I got so carried away and spent so much money that they asked that I take a free pack of gum of my choice upon checkout haha. They also interacted with other patrons as if they were old friends. They knew what magazines each person was looking for and could tell them if any new volumes had arrived. I had been meaning to get to Casa for a long while, partially because I was interested and partially because in New York, you shouldn't procrastinate doing or seeing something that matters to you . . . you never know when it will suddenly be gone. I am glad I made it out here. I will gladly spend my money to keep this business alive and hopefully thriving and will definitely be back. read more

Idk why this store has changed so radically, but it's sad to see. I used to make a point to shop here every time I visited NYC. Not anymore. The store now promotes a huge number of soft porn magazines that try to hide as nouveau art. Spoiler: they're just soft porn. The selection of fashion & health focused magazines has dwindled down to maybe a dozen. The wall of magazines still exists, but they're not the current issues. Don't waste your time or money here. Barnes & Noble now has a better selection! read more

Amazing magazines, but one of the employee's there was making a rude comment to another possible employee or customer, i couldn't tell, and it really ruined the experience for me. His name was Ali. Every other employee was very kind and it was a lovely store, but that experience will sadly ruin any future stops into that establishment. read more

I went to Casa Magazines for a special event that was hosted here. The whole storefront was decorated for Pat McGrath Labs' Divine Rose giveaway. It was the perfect place for the runway and beauty trailblazer that is Pat McGrath to host a giveaway. The store was filled with magazines which made the perfect back drop for the event. We got to take a picture with Pat McGrath inside the store and was given some items to take home including the sought after Mothership VII: Divine Rose. The owner handed us the palettes himself which was pretty cool. I cannot wait to visit this year and check out the store during a regular business day. read more

Most recent purchases included No Man's Land (The Wing's new mag), Gentlewoman, CR Fashion Book, and August. It is cramped, with all shelves packed tight. It only adds to the charm. As an added bonus, it's only a few blocks away from Barbuto! This is the one thing that I miss about NY the most. Besides Taim in the West Village!! This magazine store is packed and stacked with all obscure, hard to find glossy's from all over the world, literally. Multiple languages, check. The only substitute I have in San Francisco is Smoke Signals....and you can't compare it to Casa! If you can't find it on the floor, it is bound to be buried somewhere. This is my favorite newsstand in the city. Despite the small shop's sense of clutter, Casa -- also known as Global News -- has an amazing selection. And when new issues come in, the middle of the floor is a pile of boxes as the staff shelves new issues. Just now, I dropped about $50 -- it's been awhile since I've gone on a magazine jag; forgive me -- on titles like Comic Art, Success, Publishers Weekly, Filmfax, and Strategy+Business. And the fellow working there is going to set aside the first issue of Good for me to pick up later today. They got in five issues of the premiere issue and have already sold out. So. Many. Magazines! Update: They still don't have any more copies of Good. That magazine is hot! read more

Hands down the absolute best magazine shop in town. Any and all magazines you could ever want are sold here. They will also ship them to you if you live out of town. It is so small in there that you can barely move if there are more than 3 people in there and I love it. They have so many phenomenal magazines that you can hardly walk around.. it is heaven for a fashion magazine junky like myself. Every morning, Mohammad and Ali have been extremely helpful as they've quickly navigated me through an ocean of magazines to find what it is I need. By the way, even if you don't find what it is you're looking for, they will order it and contact you when it arrives. Oh and probably the most amazing aspect of this business is that they have issues that aren't slated to come out on regular newsstands for at least a few more days or weeks. Nice, right? read more

When I told him he was the king, he introduced himself and his colleague, shook my hand and told me he could order things for me, too. So: not only do they have mags hanging from the ceilings - they are friendly and don't mind if you ask questions or take too long browsing. The gentleman working there today dug up the previous month's issue of The Rake for me, which pleased me immensely as I had missed it last month. My only complaint would be the size of the shop. Not much space to maneuver, and you really need assistance finding your favorite rag, should it be buried somewhere. Overall, it was a great experience. read more

Horrible service and blatant discrimination by the workers. I just left the store a few moments ago and I am scathing. I've never had to physically scream at a store worker in my life before today. I work in the publishing industry and make it a point to shop at these token stores still in the area to give the business, and you would think I was some hoodlum in there flipping tables by the way I was treated. There were several other (older white) patrons in the place, who were able to peruse as they chose unbothered. I, on the other hand, was told by the younger indian guy working the register I was "ruining" everything. I confronted him at the ridiculousness of the comment, it's a store, am I not allowed to flip through the magazines? He goes over and points at ONE magazine I did not place back in the original position it was in, and commented on how he had to come out from behind the counter to fix everytime this happened. One magazine. Mind you, it's not my job, and the store is a wopping 20 feet big. I immediately walked out of the store (after giving him a piece of my mind). While I truely hope this wasn't a racial thing, being a young and a person of color... but, if the older white clientele are able to freely walk around and touch things, open wrapped magazines, and put things back unscathed -- why am I the sole person confronted and pointed out? I wish there had been other people in the store besides us two when this happened, the absurdity was unreal. read more

They have all types of magazines in multiple languages--Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, etc. The shop was much smaller than I imagined, I wish it could be bigger with a little more selection, but it seems in general this kind of shop is quite unique and rare. Magazines are around $16/$20 with some very expensive ones mixed in, so be sure to ask the owner the price if you are not sure.
