I'd been curious about what lies within Casa Iberica's colourful walls for years, but not being much of a cook I never had need to visit. So when a friend announced we were having a taco-making day, I jumped at the chance to go and find authentic Mexican ingredients... I found many, many strange and wonderful things in Casa Iberica. I have no idea what half of them were, but I loved the colourful labels. They stock food from Spain, Portugal and all over South and Central America. I told the lady I was looking for authentic Mexican things for tacos and she was very helpful - I ended up leaving with pickled jalapenos, frijoles, refried beans, multiple unidentifiable sauces of varying levels of spiciness and some Colombian coffee, just for good measure... The result of this haul was the best home made tacos I've ever had! Of course, I've never had tacos in a Mexican home, but that doesn't count. Anyway, even if you're not in the market for weird and wonderful Spanish foods, Casa Iberica is worth a visit - it's way more fun than a regular deli.

On Johnston street you will find a place called the Spanish Club. Truth be told this is not where the Spanish really is. A few doors down you come across a food store of low light and maddening scents permeating from it. THIS is where the Spanish really is. Casa Iberica is where I come for all my Spanish spices and herbs. Smoked Paprika in wicked little tin cans yes yes. Custard Tarts yes yes. Herbal Teas ye yes yes. Everything else is also of the Spanish bend. Cooking pots and equipment to make all the delicacies you've heard about. The prices for all these bits is cheap in terms of the spices, though the equipment is the quality you'd expect to use for more than a week, so are a little on the investment side. The people found behind the counters are helpful to all the unsure cookers of food like myself, and will help with recipes when they can.

Chillies from Casa Iberica-perfect for mole

This place is a gem! It has everything you could possibly want or need for Latin inspired cooking and then some. They have huge bags of dried chillies-anchos, pasillas, chipotle...which is one of my favourite things about the store. They also have an incredible range of hot sauces that you can't find elsewhere. The deli is pared back but has all the key cheeses and salamis, and a great selection of olives. They also have a chiller with local cheeses, including Meredith feta. You can pick up something for lunch too, with beautiful empanadas on offer. In the freezer cabinet, they have a selection of frozen seafood perfect for paella and you can also pick up huge paella pans while you're there. We really love this deli and recommend it to everyone-and you absolutely must try the Portuguese custard tarts-you won't get better!

Love it. You can…read morenot walk past this place and miss it. Because it looks so out of place on a Melbourne corner, like it came here straight from America's dirty south. Mel P., explained it all. Their downstairs is for the daytime deli, upstairs is dinner at Longhorn Saloon. Being the sister of Le Bon Ton, you see lots of meaty options from Le Bon Ton itself. Came here for a Good Beer Week event with Sixpoints Brewery and had a dreamy time. (Sixpoints Brews at 5 Point Deli! I just got that.) The special was a Sixpoint brew accompanied by a jerk chicken burger for $20. How could I resist? The burger was so good, the chicken wasn't overcooked and was jerk seasoned to juicy perfection. Their appetizer of fried chicken tenders was so yummy, and came with a cheesy biscuit and cracked pepper white gravy. This was my first time seeing southern-style gravy at a restaurant in Australia, so obviously, I was stoked, that biscuit and gravy combo took me straight back home, and I loved it. I already prefer this venue over Le Bon Ton. Not too compare siblings or anything, because Le Bon Ton has a lot to offer, but I thought this menu was more intriguing. Love the setting, it's not dark and voodoo-ish, like Le Bon Ton. There's a sunroof portion letting in natural light, with wood everything. Staff was hands down, amazing. Every single host/waiter/waitress/manager was friendly and so welcoming. Seriously, even the barman greeted us with hello. I couldn't tell you the last time I had such a good customer service experience like that. Can't wait to come back to explore this menu further.

We're talking melt-in-your-mouth smoky pastrami, smoky turkey breast and reubens like you've never seen. Having had the smoked meat poutine at upstairs Longhorn, it took me a fair amount of restraint not to get this (it's listed as a side but is a meal in its own unless you have enough people to share!) ...but I was here to try the sandwiches. Thankfully I brought along my partner in crime so we could go splitsies on two. We ordered the "world famous smoked pastrami" and the turkey club. Which they could also get away with calling "best club sandwich in town". Both were huge (not side-splitting ridiculous) sandwiches, served with a mound of seasoned crisps and a pickle. Come hungry though. Both were so delicious. The turkey club was my personal favourite and shouldn't be overlooked in all the excitement over the pastrami. The pastrami is thick, smokey and not like any other I've had in Melbourne. Thicker than what they use on the poutine. I love pickles, but must admit I throw a lot away when people try to offer them up at American style places. Not here though, they are perfect. I ate both of them. They also offer an All You Can Eat Buffet Breakfast here. I'm not sure if that has started yet or what's on offer (maybe call first to check!), but if it's half as good as lunch I think big breakfast eaters and buffet breakfast fans will be mighty pleased.

However, I did spend quite a bit of time perusing their selection. It is notably the first place I've seen in Australia to offer the new Ben and Jerry's dairy-free ice cream (which I had no room to try, sadly). They make a variety of fresh sandwiches and things, offer premade pastries and such, and sell a variety of hard to find goods. As with most vegan stores, it's pricey and something of a luxury, but a nice one to have. I would not, however, suggest that any non-Australian try anything with vegemite. I know I'm writing this place a positive review, but that stuff is pretty gross.

Smith and deli is no exception. The variety of sandwiches alone, and alllll vegan pointedly, is outstanding. I went with the "bacon" and "chicken" schnitzel sandwich with ranch lettuce and tomato and it was fantastic. I'm not even vegan and can tell you that if nobody had told me it was vegan, I'd have thought it was the real deal. They have a great selection of vegan products from around the globe too. You can imagine how crazy busy this place gets. Staff are lovely too. Get amongst it!

I went to cheese stores all through Melbourne and around Brisbane and this was where I found the greatest selection of cheese made in Australia. To get a sandwich, bypass the gelato out front and go inside, then bypass the groceries and head straight to the back. There's a cashier here who will take your order and bring your sandwich out to you after about a 10-15 minute wait. I love this place because of their four vegan sandwich options: a tofu salad open sandwich with sesame and lime dressing; a bagel sandwich with a tofu and corn fritter and curried cashews, cucumber, and coriander; a tempeh burger on focaccia with kimchi and ABC sauce; and an eggplant, pumpkin, spinach, white bean, and basil pesto on focaccia. If these descriptions don't have you drooling right now, I don't know what's wrong with you. All vegan sandwiches are $11.50 and come with potato chips. This is a fair price for a delicious and rather filling lunch. Their non-vegan sandwiches aren't much more expensive either. My favorite is the tempeh burger with ABC sauce -- it's like an Indonesian sweet soy sauce -- oh man. Just the right mix of unusual but awesome flavours. There's no seating here -- it's take-away only, unless you're out front having a gelato. While you wait for your sandwich, you can peruse the specialty grocery items. They have a small but impressive collection of hard-to-find and locally-made items, such as La Tortilleria tortillas, local hand-made chocolates, jars of refrigerated kimchi, and chips made from all manner of non-potato things -- kale chips, bean chips, turnip chips.... Just be prepared for some sticker shock. These specialty groceries don't come cheap. (One of the chocolate bars was $14!!! It better be chocolate CRACK, at that price.) All in all, a great place to come for an awesome take-away sandwich with fresh and often unusual ingredients at lunchtime, and a fun place to peruse if you like your exotic, organic, hand-made/hand-dipped/hand-chopped/hand-crafted/hand-tooled/hand-whatever fancy-pants specialty grocery items. You know who you are. (Note the sandwiches are a Monday-Friday lunchtime thing only. I came once on the weekend and they weren't making sandwiches. The gelato is available all the time, but I admit I haven't sampled it yet.)
