We were without reservations and showed up in town unexpectedly on our road trip through the Yucatan. My husband had some questions about the room (whether or not the included bedding/sheets and a kitchenette) and Juan-Antonio gladly offered to show us the room. The room we had (#5) was simple and efficient, very clean and stocked with the basics of what we needed. There was a small hot plate and a kitchenette sink with two plates, two bowls, forks, a pan, and nothing else. There is, however, a communal kitchen downstairs with a larger stove, sink, more dishware, and a communal fridge, water kettle, and anything else one might need to cook a meal. We stayed here for two nights, and we loved our stay. Every time we had a question Juan-Antonio was eager to assist us with such a happy attitude, he was incredibly patient of my badly-spoken Spanish and had conversations with me about local life, explaining the religious ceremony taking place at the church/park next door. He also happily offered us explanations of some events and had maps painted on his walls to show where popular places are in Valladolid. If we end up coming back through town we will absolutely stay at Santa Maria Guesthouse again. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Valladolid as well. This place is more than a hostel, it really is more of a guest house!

The town is safe, friendly, and full of things to do. Paul and Beate's bed and breakfast is like home away from home with people who really care about you. They know a lot about where to go and what to do. Their cooking is amazing. I for one am a very picky eater and not Vegan. My wife is Vegan and Casa Axis Muni's cuisine is wooooooooowwww!!! Reminds me of being a child and eating with my grandpa in the morning. Always a yummy papaya, fresh local fruit, fresh juices, and today we even had a treat with roasted baby banana topped with hemp hearts and roasted nuts. We will miss you guys !!! Beate may all your family be great upon your visit to Germany and you are here with us too and we are with you in your heart. Bless all your loved ones. Thank you all for everything ! My partner and I stayed here earlier in July. This is a very quiet little guesthouse tucked away…read moretoward the very end of a main road (that turns residential and dead ends right before the docks). If you're going to stay here, make sure you let them know when you're going to arrive as there doesn't seem to be a front desk. I called when we got there and we waited for about 10 minutes until Genevieve got there. Not a problem though because I do understand it's not really a traditional hotel. The grounds themselves are beautiful. There's lots of green space, and there's also a little pond with two turtles in it. Hopefully someone is feeding the turtles because when we were there we gave them like 2 whole avocados over the span of 3 or 4 days - them seemed famished. The pool is OUTSTANDING. It's not a traditional pool, there's not really much space to sunbathe, but it felt SO good after a long, hot day at the beach or walking around town. Plus it overlooks the ocean. Our favorite part of the place was the rooftop. Stunning views. Unfortunately the room we stayed in had window that overlooked a tree and a wall. There was a little window at the top of that wall, and no curtains on it, which made for a daily wake up time of whenever the sun came up. BUT, their neighbors started building a wall right outside that window. The stairs they were using to get to their roof were right outside that window, and any of the workers could've looked in our room, and directly down into the bathroom/toilet. I let management know and they came not more than two hours later to measure the window and make a mesh curtain for it. I was VERY pleased with how quickly they reacted to my email. It's unfortunate (and not Layla's fault) that there was a wall built, but I suppose that solved the sunrise wake up every morning. Other than that the room (selva) was nice. It had a little cooktop, sink, microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker. The refrigerator froze almost everything we put in there, and we were unable to mess with the temperature. They had dish soap, hand soap, and I think body wash as well. Beach towels were provided though they're old and stained. The pillows were mish mash as were the pillow cases. I thought they had a restaurant and yoga classes and a salon, but everything was closed. Overall I'd recommend this place. It's a wonderfully affordable option and the entire staff is nice (I think we interacted with 5 of them; they'd come during the daytime). The views can't be beat, and the quietness of the location really amplified the charm that is Puerto Morelos!!!!

We love this place and consider it our mothership in Puerto Morelos. They serve Bibimbap which is the best we've ever had! This says a lot as we live in San Francisco where there are lots of Korean restaurants. Massages by Marcos are the greatest! Noemi and Steve provide great haircuts and salon services. Jime and Lucio, who are the managers, come up with various music and night activities. Brunch with Jime and Gloria Casanova is very entertaining! Thank you to all the staff of Layla Guesthouse.

Save yourself some stress and please use our directions to drive to this wonderful establishment: From Cancun/Airport - Take 307 to 180 to 180D (basically follow the signs to Valladolid/Merida). Be warned, this is a toll road. It costs about 300 pesos and they do not accept foreign currency or credit cards. The cost is about $15-20 USD, but will save you about 90minutes. Since it is a toll road, there are no towns or gas stations till you hit Valladolid (about 90km). After about an hour (we drove the speed limit), take 295 South towards Valladolid. At the roundabout, follow the signs to Cancun via 180 (the Northeastern part of the "wheel" if you look at a map). At the stop sign, take a left and cross over the highway and 2 exit/entrance ramps to the Hotel (It's a huge sign/gated entrance). If you see Mayapan Traditional Agave Distillery, you've gone West instead of East. If you see the police stop in Valladolid, you've gone too far and do not use the 180 that runs through town; it will take you all the way to Tulum. Five Stars isn't enough to describe how amazing Hacienda Kaan AC. A hidden gem in the Yucatan that has set the standard for all of our future stays at any Resort/Bed & Breakfast. We were hesitant to write this review, because we thought about keeping it for ourselves and the locals that visit here often. If you are looking for a combination of rest and adventure, look no further. The Hacienda, itself, is rich in history, which is detailed in a book written in 1864. The book, "El Filibustero" described the adventure and love story of a pirate that resulted in the property that is translated from Mayan to mean "High in the Sky," hence the hotel's other name "El Olimpo." Even the main building, El Castillo, was reconstructed from the archaeological remains of a 16th century castle (large pictures of the site are located in the resorts restaurant) and contains an extensive collection of artwork from that period. Yes, you are literally staying in a museum and historical site located in the heart of the Yucatan. More on adventure: We highly recommend that you have your own transportation if you decide to stay here. The hotel is located 15minutes North of ancient city of Valladolid, a great place for strolling through its colonial-era stone streets to visit extremely tourist friendly restaurants, chapels, markets, and cenotes. Three major Mayan Ruins are located within driving distance: Chichen Itza, Ek' Balam, and Coba (the last is located in Quintana Roo half way between the hotel and the ocean), Many cenotes are located around the hotel in addition to their own private one (the mechanism used for raising and lowering people looks ancient and scary - we don't think it has been in operation for years). More on relaxation: During your stay, you can enjoy their pools, wander the grounds, or just relax in their comfortable rooms with jetted tubs and powerful AC units. You'll basically have your own private Butler that works the grounds and the restaurant. Edwardo worked two of the three nights that we visited. English was not his first language, but he was extremely patient and friendly. Helping us despite our horrid Spanish (we've gotten rusty over the last ten years since living in Juarez) and teaching us some Mayan in the process: "Ni'bo'olal!". Each stay comes with a complimentary breakfast at their restaurant too (Please see our separate review for the restaurant). I could write pages on how amazing and relaxing our stay was Hacienda Kaan AC. We'd love to return and, if your looking for an amazing hotel on your adventures in the Yucatan, we suggest you that you plan your stay here.

The staff is friendly, and willing to share the stories they know about the place. It's so nice to stay in a place so full of history, and that is keeping its charm and not becoming another touristy place changing to suit the patrons. My only complaint is that when I asked for Chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate) for breakfast, they offered me chocomilk (which is like nesquick). But I did have some great Mexican eggs and conchas. Back in 2011, we opened the doors to our very first 2-unit guesthouse, Los Alcatraces Cozumel, right on 25th Avenida. It was cozy, heartfelt, and filled with the kind of charm you can’t quite buy off a shelf. For eight years, that place brought us so much joy—and let’s be honest, a fair share of learning curves too. But eventually, we outgrew it. We knew we wanted something more: space, sunshine, and maybe a pool where folks could unwind after a day of snorkeling or just sip a cocktail and watch the world go by. So when we found a larger property tucked away on 15th Avenida, it felt right. We reimagined what a boutique stay in Cozumel could be and created Stingray Villa—a mini resort with four Airbnb units all wrapped around a central pool. Simple. Elegant. Relaxed. Fast forward to today, and we’ve had the absolute pleasure of welcoming guests from over 100 countries. It’s been quite the ride. And you know what? We’re still just as excited about every check-in, every story shared by the pool, and every sunset that reminds us why we started this journey in the first place.
