Throwing a stone in to the calm pond that is restaurants that is Bayside Restaurants is- Casa Del Moroc, run and owned by the lovely Joanna and her fabulous Moroccan head chef husband! Boy oh boy, did we need this out here!
Casa Del Moroc is authentic and rustic, it's not pretending to be anything it is not, in Black Rock no less. I have so much respect for that. Their fit out combines Arabian lush and contemporary clean, fabulous.
The service is attentive, proactive and knowledgeable, my favourite and most sort adjectives for service staff. Our waitress was cheeky and made "jokes" about secret recipes and actually offered to discuss history of our meals of we were so inclined, which at times we were. She also made some great recommendations in regards to portions and dish suggestions.
I ordered the Tribal Chicken, with couscous- you have the option of selecting rice or couscous. I really do not know how they their couscous so soft and fluffy, but it was saffron bathed and cotton kissed, perfect next to my hearty, homestyle chicken.
We ordered a vary of entrées to share amongst our table of five, meat on skewers, pastry, dips and such. I won't be to specific as I was not in definite Yelp mode, but I will tell you, every bite I was lucky enough to have was perfection and my dear four companions agreed. The tips were all made in house as we would learn later, as are the spice mixes and all sauces!
The Tribal Chicken was exactly what it claimed it would be on the menu, which ideally is what you get. The chicken still had its juice and bounce, the sauce creamy with coconut and spiced with things I'm sure I can only imagine. A delicious menu item, recommended to all coconut lovers who find themselves in Casa Del Moroc.
I had the pleasure of tasting a few other mains throughout the evening and they were all lovely. The sauces were balanced and not at all overwhelmed by herbs and spices as you sometimes find at Moroccan Restaurants.
For desert we had the Love Cake, a semolina cake doused in rose water and served with vanilla ice cream. As you would expect from a Middle Eastern desert it was quite sweet, however the portion was small and we were shared as was recommended, so it was perfect! We drank Moroccan coffee which tasted like a rich espresso, but had cinnamon, cardamom pods and other spices brewed with it. It was a gorgeous cup of coffee.
As we were the last to leave, the incredibly friendly and personable owner Joanna came out and introduced herself and chatted with us, telling us about the restaurant and her husband- the chef. It was a nice way to end evening.
She mentioned the private room out the back that is available for events for up to 28 people and advised they have an app too! Very helpful indeed! The price is appropriate to the area, the portions and the quality at about $22-$30.
