One of the displays in that area was a group of children's books about self-care, so charming and very needed! The only drawback, in my book, was that the restrooms are under lock-and-key, and a staff member has to unlock/open the bathroom door for you. The staff member was very nice about it, but it still felt a little awkward to me. I assume there's a reason for the policy, and I still love a community library. :-)

Hill was 1st superintendent; used as Confederate hospital; public school, 1883-1950. Stood near here." The institute was established in 1858 and Daniel Harvey Hill (who was later a Confederate general during the Civil War) was the first superintendent. The school was later used by the Charlotte Military Academy, which architect Herbert B. Hunter attended. The North Carolina Fallen Fire Fighter's Memorial is a nice tribute to the men and women who lost…read moretheir lives in the line of duty. The Memorial is in Nash Square in Downtown Raleigh and across the street from a fire station. The large memorial is a bronze statue with four firefighters. Three firefighters are rescuing a fourth that was under a steel beam. The names of the fallen heroes who have died since 1902 had to be redone as they ran out of room as unfortunately more names needed to be added. They also include those who have died of heart attacks and car accidents. If you are near Nash Square make sure to stop by this memorial.

This location outside the Chamber has ample parking and the vendors fit in around the parking lot. It's just that YouTube and the like have made us more aware of it, and yes, it's getting worse. But anyway. My one and only experience with the Durham Police was a negative one. I got thrown out of a Harris Teeter just for using my computer in there, which I've done at a dozen other Harris Teeters (all of which right after shopping there, and totally legally). Some other people were not thrown out, and they were also hanging out and being loud in the same part of the store. It was quite surreal and bizarre and hardly ever happens to me. Naturally I gave the store and the security people a one-star. Then the cop they apparently called or alerted was in the parking lot watching me and looking me up on his computer and shining a light in my car window while I was looking up directions. I was one of 40 cars in the lot, but the only one that just got wrongly told to leave the store, and the only one with NY plates. I noticed that he was acting like he was going to follow me. Checked out my license plate and whatnot. I did absolutely nothing to warrant calling the police and I wanted to complain about the treatment they had afforded me, but he gave me seriously creepy vibe - like he was looking for a reason to bust me, and very bored - definitely not your friendly officer on the Block, so I just got the hell out of town, didn't notice him follow, and will be careful when coming back to Durham.

"John Chavis, born around 1763 in Virginia, was a prominent free black preacher and educator in and around the Raleigh area from 1810 onwards. Chavis was raised in Virginia and had an extensive education for the time period, likely the best education of any African American of his day in North Carolina. He is best known for his classical teaching in Raleigh, educating children of all races and from all different backgrounds. In 1832 free blacks lost many of their rights in North Carolina, and Chavis lost his freedom to preach and to teach. He died in 1838, having lived and worked as a respected member of society amongst all races of people. I recently heard about this organization who is sponsoring major concert events and benefiting…read morewonderful causes. This organization has raised over $330,000.00 for non-profit organizations such as Hurricane Katrina victims ans Tsunami victims. Their next venture is a concert to benefit SafeChild, an organization against child abuse. This a a 1st class organization, who could really help invoke the type of changes that we need in today's society. They started after the 9/11 attacks. Young business leaders around the triangle came together and organized a 4-band event that raised over $60,000.00 to aid NYC and DC relief efforts. Since 2003 Band Together NC is a unit design to help non-profit organizations on local, national, and global scales. An approximate $108,000.000 was raised by this committee to aid The Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle and The Boys & Girls Club of Wake county in May of 2007 with two separate events both within 7 days of each other. Since researching them, I not only approve of them but I am interested in joining them and challenge others from the triangle to do so as well.
