The new building is spacious, but it seems to be the only thing that got an update. I was really disappointed. The clerks are friendly but unenthusiastic, and give the impression of wanting to do the least they can get by with. When someone asks for help, they point them in a general direction most of the time, rather than the typical library experience of taking them to what they're looking for. The gray-haired man and one clerk from the children's room are the only ones I've seen willingly leave the desk or converse with patrons. They don't have a lot of popular books you would expect to find, and can find, at libraries in surrounding counties, and the ones they do have are rarely in the proper place. The children's area, which consists of a carpeted stage, some stuffed animals and a few computers, is especially disorganized, even taking into account that kids pull out books and don't put them back correctly. The activities offered are toddler story time, monthly Lego club, no-frills movie nights and teen game nights. I appreciate what they do offer and don't mean to seem ungrateful, but I'm originally from a town with a population of 937 versus Mount Sterling's 7,209 and that library, which is older than me with the same clerks from when I was a child, has interactive children's toys, a better selection of books and WAY better activities happening more frequently. My wife and I love visiting Libraries. My wife is an avid reader and encourages our children to be…read morethe same. This location is great. Their Story Time is great and our kids love it! The staff is very friendly and takes the time to get to know each customer. They are very helpful with book reservations as well as suggestions. They help you with book transfers as well. I highly recommend this Library for any Cabell County patron and I can't wait until they are able to build the new Library. Finally, they have a number of programs for kids and this location isn't too far from a couple of the schools.

Though I no longer live in Jackson, I am a frequent visitor, and today the Jackson Public Library saved me with their free wifi! I was pleasantly surprised to find a fully open and free broadband network that would let me finish my work without the frustration of dialup or satellite internet. For the area, the library is well stocked and can usually order books if you ask. It has a very pleasant feel, though a bit on the warm side for me. The help desk was true it its name when I had asked about free wifi. Not only can you borrow books, but you're also able to send faxes, browse an amazing selection of local history, newspapers, and other periodicals, and hop one of the many computers available. If you find yourself in Jackson looking for a free network or wanting to bone up on your southern Ohio history, come to the public library! It's a great place to work for a few hours!
