They have extensive exhibits of farming, ranching, industry, business, family life, military, and wildlife. We learned that all these were donated by local residents! Some include a fully equipped early dentist office, a doctor's office, replica of a 1920's home, and even yearbook pictures of Dumas High School. We also got to meet the painter who creates all the wonderful art on display for sale at the Art Center inside the museum. If you're ever in Dumas, definitely check it out! Surprised that admission is free too.

We took our dog and a walk and noticed the outside area was free and had a walking path. It is various large items on display. Some items have more details than other but a nice area to walk. We didn't go inside the museum as we had our dog and with Covid we are staying outside. I hope someday to go inside but good to know the outside is free. So many years we assumed it was closed as the museum was closed. It appears you could walk around it at any time.

Supposedly there are over 2000 patents for it, so depending on how interested you are, the visit time varies. The building also houses the Texas Route 66 Museum, which is small or fairly-sized, but still has plenty of memorabilia to check out. There is also a wall that has the pictures of Texas Route 66 Hall of Fame inductees. If you're traveling on the Mother Road, don't skip out on this museum! One last thing to note: they have a cool gift shop so it is very likely you'll find something you collect here.

Wow, what a cool little museum for the area!…read more It had been probably a good 20 years since I last visited Borger and this little museum, but I still remembered bits and pieces and it still stands! It's really thorough in it's exhibits, and has a little bit of everything that made up this Texas Oil Boom-town. It starts with geology, archaeology, and works up through the height of the Oil Boom town where you could see Oil rigs for miles. The pictures are pretty cool and interesting. They also have some preserved newspaper articles about some of the well known outlaws some of the TX rangers were looking for. My great-grandfather was constable of Borger for a couple years, so it's cool to see some of the history in front of us while walking around. There's also some exhibits upstairs on the 2nd floor about local life, the community organizations, etc. All pretty cool and fascinating stuff and a different perspective of life in the Texas Oil Boom-towns. All exhibits are complete with creepy mannequins displaying collections. I was actually impressed with how well taken care of this collection is. My only qualm was the older desk volunteer seemed bored to tears, and was not very helpful when we had some questions. Overall, it's a nice little museum featured in the historic oil boom town in Texas.

I would say it has three parts; the building housing a detailed model railroad, an outdoor garden railroad, and the historic train engine and cars outdoors - including a Dept of Energy nuclear weapons transport train previously used for the nearby Pantex plant. The indoor train has representative modeling of the cities and rail lines east-west across the TX panhandle. The two level circuit route fills up much of the inside of the building. At this writing, it's pretty bare bones, the track is laid out, but lots of bare plywood and spaces for filling in the cities, buildings and features. Sky and clouds backdrops are looking good. Got a guided tour of the guard cars and engine of the "white train" used for nuclear weapons transport. Very interesting to see the security measures surrounding warhead transport. The garden railroad in front of the building is also still under construction. Currently has the brick foundation and dirt landscaping, and track is laid, but is not fully operational at this time. The staff on site were friendly and knowledgeable. Admission is free. Website amarillorailmuseum.com is spotty, but lists hours as: Our regular meeting nights are Thursday, from 7:00 p.m. until about 10:00. We are also open the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
