Disclaimer: Only commenting as a visitor to an inmate as I do not know first hand what goes on…read morebehind locked doors as an inmate and hope I never will. I had the opportunity to visit NNDOC as that is where you visit inmates housed at Stewart conservation camp. The sheriff in "the lobby" of the visiting room was very nice. I really did not what to expect being the first time and was quite anxious. There are a lot of rules that looked intimidating, but in fairness, they are for everyone involved and their protection. Can't beat that. I got patted down and brought in only what I could. Inmates and visitors sit across from each other at tables. I'm sure that the officers are watching your every move behind the glass, but it was nice and comfortable because you could not see them looking at you due to reflective glass. There are vending machines there and you can play board games. Visiting is 2 hours and you sign up on the NNDOC visiting website. Easy peasy. I know that some may think I'm crazy for giving a good review to a prison. My review is based on a first time visitor. Granted no one wants to go to prison. Glad I get to return home. I was treated with respect and friendliness by the officer in the waiting room. She smiled and was helpful and that made a not so positive situation less uncomfortable. I talked to other visitors which is kind of a "support group". Gotta keep an open, positive mind and look at the good of the experience.

Since our kids moved here several years back, we find ourselves traveling to this town pretty often…read morenow. They have tried to lure us to move here, but we keep reminding them we don't like snow. Accommodations are quite expensive-- especially during the high season, which is actually summer, not winter. But don't expect a deal in winter either. There is a lot to do in Truckee. For those who like mountain biking or hiking, there are tons of trails around. Naturally, there are several world-class ski resorts nearby as well. Expect to pay a lot. Truckee is one of the most beautiful places in Northern California. There's a good reason that people flock here. One of my favorite places to visit in town is the Fifty-Fifty" brewery. It is very close to Sierra Bible Church. On Sunday mornings you can get your spiritual enlightenment, and then follow it up with some liquid refreshment. If you go to the second service, the brewery will open about the time the church lets out. I'm not sure if they coordinated those times or not, but it works out well, at least for me. Truckee has so much snow, they have developed a world-class system of maintaining the roads. They actually teach other cities how to do it. There is an excellent State Park based upon the Infamous Donner party history. It's well worth taking the tour there. Now that our kids own a house here, we can avoid paying the expensive hotel bills. But I'm afraid our kids might make us shovel snow.

What more can I say then, Thank you, thank you, thank you, Town of Truckee-Truckee Donner…read moreRecreation & Parks Dept; for once again outdoing yourselves with the BEST fireworks show in California. Donner Lake was literally LIT up last night, with the MOST spectacular fireworks & finale show of all time! I can honestly write this, as I've had plenty of experiences with 4th of July firework shows, from around California (ie: numerous Bay Area locations, San Francisco Bay, North & South Lake Tahoe, boating at the Delta-fireworks put on by the Hilton Family), but none to date, have come even close to comparison, of the fireworks put on by the, Town of Truckee-Truckee Donner Recreation & Parks Dept, year after year. Because I can't personally thank each person, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my & my family's gratitude to EVERYONE; from the Town of Truckee, Town of Truckee personnel & road crew, Truckee Donner Rec & Parks Dept, Truckee Police Dept, Truckee Fire Dept, Truckee Hwy Patrol & to all those that volunteered, to make this day a special one. Thank you, for your time, patience & all of the hard work that was contributed & performed by every single person involved in making this years, 4th of July celebration at Donner Lake, amazing, fun & safe! You rock.

This building was more museum like and less active use than others we have been to. They had several other buildings on the grounds where the assembly, senate, and state supreme court are actively working. The governor's office was still in the original main building. They had some nice museum displays that we walked through on our self guided tour. We came on a weekday and were able to walk through most every area of the building. The original rooms for the assembly, senate, and supreme court were preserved to be as they may have been in their early days of use. There was a lot of wood accents throughout the foyer area on the staircases and trim. The outside grounds had some monuments and statues to see, and a lot of lush green trees around the building. We could not get a photo of the exterior of the building with the dome due to the heavy tree cover. There was a scale model in the museum that shows what the structure looks like so we got an idea of the size and configuration. If in town, I'd recommend making this stop to experience the heart of US history.

In that reception area is a very old bank vault door that used to hold some of the states treasures. The receptionist will give you a brief history of it. Upstairs, is the Lt. Governor and Treasurer along with a room of Nevada history. I found this building to be interesting and educational. On the walls are portraits of past Governors. Budget about 30 minutes to visit and the best news is that it's free. Also street parking is free for 2 hours.
