Actually ended up wandering the area and hubby pulled over to put a new address in his GPS. As he pulled over, I couldn't help but be drawn to the house we were parked next to. For some reason, the story in my mind was taken place in San Francisco so I thought- let's check where is Charmed Halliwell Manor located. Had no clue that I was staring at it! Was a bit confused as I did not see the round window that was famous in the attic. Turns out, it was across the street! As a Charmed fan, I all but forgot to snap a pic of the round window ‍ Pretty cool to be a tourist in LA though I live 30 mins away. read more

What does Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video and Aaron Spelling's hit TV show "Charmed" have in common? Why, the Victorian homes, of course, nestled on the same block of Carroll Avenue in Echo Park! In honor of Halloween, I decided to do a quick, Halloween sightseeing tour (with earlier trips to The Spadena House aka The Witch's House in Beverly Hills, and to The Jim Henson Company in Hollywood. A few years back, I visited the "Murder House" from American Horror Story in Koreatown). Now, ending the Halloween sightseeing trip at the 1300 Block of Carroll Avenue. Who knew, both the "Thriller" and "Charmed" homes were just a couple of blocks up the hill behind my Mom's old hairstylist's place, hehe! That's so cool! Being able to see the homes up close (as far as the sidewalks to be exact) that were once film locations and picturing Michael Jackson (RIP), Shannon Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan running up and down the steps during film productions - ahhh, nostalgic memories! Bummer though, the homes were taped off (not just for the Halloween effects, but to also keep the properties from being vandalized and viewed at a proper distance). Of course, residents actually do live there, and so, NO inside tours available. I also checked out the other Victorian homes and they were lovely as well. The ones nicely decorated for Halloween were also taped off too. The preservation of these homes and its stunning architecture and old-world charms are definitely a sight to be seen! Worth checking out for tourists and locals alike! read more

Let me take you back in the past. Are You Ready? In 3...2...1. Carroll Ave is a historical landmark street famous for having the largest concentration of Victorian-era homes in the city, and the highest concentration of Eastlake and Queen Anne residences in Southern California. A dozen or so of the houses appear on the historic sites register. Located just a mile from downtown, Carroll Avenue also features a few homes that have been featured on television and music videos, including the Charmed house and the abode shown in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. These victorian houses are LA's version of the Painted Ladies of SFO. I drove by to spent a few minutes to see these beautiful houses. Overall, it's a great historical landmark for tourists or locals to visit. read more

So what's so special about Carroll Ave? Well the entire 1300 block of Carroll Avenue (between Douglas St & E Edgeware Rd) was declared as historic-cultural monuments by City of Los Angeles as well as listed as the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. 1300 block of Carroll Ave has highest concentration of Victorian Era residences and anyone can check out exterior of these fancy houses for free; however, these houses are private properties and they are not opened to the public for indoor tours. The most famous house is probably the one at 1345 Carroll Avenue where a portion of Michael Jackson's Thriller MV was filmed. Expect a short 5 - 15 minutes stroll and it doesn't hurt that street parking is also free. read more

What can I say... "Charmed" the original show back in the 2000s, it was my absolute favorite show. I have all 8 seasons. When I was younger, and I found out that this house wasn't in San Francisco, I was so disappointed. LOL I had to learn that the story was just based in San Francisco. I also was disappointed, because San Francisco Bay area is my home, born and raised & there was a chance that I could've visited the house in San Francisco, if there was such thing! Turns out, no such thing. LOL Finally 10+ years later, my husband and I got to visit the Charmed Manor in LA. It was a dream to be standing there, taking videos and photos. :) something that I'll never forget. Luckily, before my trip, I had learned also, that the attic that they used in the show, wasn't actually at this house. It was actually at the house across the street, that I have a photo of. Also, standing in front of this house, and the many Victorian houses on this block, it was absolutely beautiful! This is a must see, even if it has nothing to do with the TV series. LOL A very nice tourist attraction. read more

So ye good ole trip to Carroll Ave viewing Victorian homes with buddy Sam L. had me on high alert. I wore loose clothing and running shoes laced TIGHT in case I needed to make a dash for it. It is Famous for its preservation of its Gorgeous Victorian Homes. They are BEAUTIFUL! This place has now been given 3 important designations by the government. It is now on the US National Register of Historic Places, a US Historic District, & a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument. Besides that it has been featured in many movies from the earliest days of cinema to the present day & there have been TV Shows as well. One of its most famous roles was in the Michael Jackson's Thriller Video. It was also in the TV Show Charmed about Witches. Speaking of the Charmed TV show, the Charmed home is 2 doors down from the Michael Jackson Thriller house & is also on Carroll Avenue. Most of of LA has very modern homes Carroll Ave is unlike any part of LA. It seems like it's has been plucked out of the East Coast & planted smack dab right outside of Downtown LA. The street is lined with Stunning Queen Anne and Eastlake style homes. Most of them date back to the 1800's. Even the street lights are different & reflect a Victorian Theme of the past. It is great to come here during the day but it's beautiful at night with the street lights all aglow. You can see fantastic views of Downtown LA both day & night & from several streets below there's even a clearer view. The area is idyllic & picturesque anytime but it takes on an additional layer of Spookiness during the month of October. During Halloween time it gives off the air of being haunted. Feel free to meander the street & take a picture. PLEASE DO NOT BOTHER THE RESIDENTS. THESE ARE PEOPLE'S HOMES THAT THEY LIVE IN & THEY ARE NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. A Picture on the sidewalk is as far as you should go. DO NOT DISTURB THE RESIDENTS! BE QUIET & RESPECTFUL! The entire 1300 block of Carroll Avenue is now listed on The National Reguster of Historic Places. In addition numerous individual homes in the 1300 & 1400 hundred block have been designated as monuments & listed on The Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monuments site. I have individual listings & exact locations of The Michael Jackson's House & The Charmed House. So be sure to check out my reviews as well. Have Fun walking up & down the street & exploring some very cool houses. Have a SPOOK-TACULAR TIME! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. Was Googling for certain directions then Google recommended this place. My sister was a huge fan of the show "Charmed" so I had to take a picture for her. Parking: On a Friday afternoon, I had no issue with parking. All street parking and it's surprising to see the frequency of visits. Feels: Not exactly stepping into a time machine but generally a semi-quiet neighborhood (I parked next to a Victorian house in which people that sounded like entrepreneurs were talking and listening to electric music. Overall: A nice simple pleasure to see at LA that doesn't cost a dime. It is also awesomely close to Echo Park and Filipino Town if you're into that stuff. Carroll Ave - Charmed house and Michael Jackson thriller house - Local Flavor Near Me - Los Angeles, California

I was on my way up to Hollywood and decided to stop here for a little bit and look around the area after hearing so much about it. There are so many Victorian homes in the area in varying degrees of condition (some are beautifully maintained, others need a bit of TLC) and it has a fascinating history as one of the oldest suburbs in LA! Some individual houses have gained their own notoriety by being used in popular films and television series over the years, which makes sense given the neighborhood's proximity to Hollywood. One house for example was used in the "Charmed" series while another one just down the street was used in Michael Jackson's iconic music video for "Thriller." It was a pretty short trip and I walked around for about a half hour but it is definitely worth a visit if you're into Victorian architecture! Just try to be respectful of the residents living here since it still is an actual neighborhood. read more

Other than the modern day cars parked on Carrol St, you think you stepped back in time a Century Earlier. On Carrol st,Douglas st and Kellem Ave are some of the finest Victorian Houses you might ever see. An interesting neighborhood to visit. Although it no longer looks like your typical wealthy neighborhood, it isn't hard to imagine what the area looked like 100+ years ago if you can visually remove the newer houses on the other side of the street. I had no idea this landmark even existed until it popped up on Yelp and knew instantly I had to check it out. The street is easy to find and so was parking. Walking up and down in the neighborhood and snapping photos was a surprisingly enjoyable experience for me. Overall, I think this is definitely a place worth 1 hour to visit. It was an enjoyable (and somewhat educational) experience even though I know nothing about architecture. Highly recommend! read more

Dreams do come true. I can literally die happily now that I've seen the Charmed House. By being the huge fan that I am.....made my boyfriend GPS/drive us to this 1329 Carroll Ave address THE DAY AFTER WE ARRIVED in LA. I was SOSOSSSOOSO ecstatic. There are some really gorgeous Victorian era houses in this neighborhood. I'm surprised that a lot of tourists don't come here while visiting. It really is being overlooked, but oh well - hidden gems should stay hidden to preserve the beauty of them ;) I have watched all 8 seasons of Charmed and I have a list of favorite episodes that I re-watch all the time just cause. THANK YOU NETFLIX. But seriously, if you love Charmed as much as I do or just like looking at historical landmarks/buildings, come here. It's a free attraction and there are many other houses on the street to check out. Like Michael Jackson's Thriller House. But I'm just here for Charmed. When we arrived in the morning on a weekday, there was another car parked in the front of the house. A family was taking pics and when they saw us, the children immediately hopped back into the car and the mom quickly followed - not before smiling at me and saying "The things we do as adults huh??" I was ready to fangirl with her but noticed they were in a hurry so I just exclaimed "YES BUT OF COURSE." She then drove off and I noticed the street cleaning signs. So just be wary of that. Me and my boyfriend tried to be as quick as possible in taking pictures. Maybe I'm asking for too much, but is it strange if I wanted to see the inside too? Lol wish I could live/stay in there for a day. Anyway, I could have sworn as we were taking pics, the car that was parked at the garage turned on its lights and there were crows flying above. Maybe it was due to some magical force... that IS what Charmed is all about - my boyfriend was creeped out but I loved it. If you have time and are in the area, highly recommend checking out this avenue. Who knows, maybe you'll get some sort of feels too! read more

I died and went to heaven! Oh god! Victorian homes are one of my weaknesses and quite honestly, may very well may be my biggest weakness, so when the lovely Val, mentioned that we check this place out on a Saturday day trip, I was beyond excited! It's really in Echo Park, right on the border of Angelino Heights. It was pretty easy to get to from the 2 and right by the newly renovated Echo Park Park (okay - I am sure there must be another name for this park... but oh well), complete with couples paddling in those little boats. Awww! Now, we pulled up on the side street and parked and walked the surrounding blocks. Walking up to Carroll Ave, I could see the already adorable post lights and the historic signs, my heart was already starting to race. When I actually physically reached the corner, I almost collapsed. There were Victorian homes everywhere. Gorgeous! Restored to their splendor Victorian homes! I know for sure I gave a squeal of delight as I started skipping down the street and stopping at each home to admire it, really take it all in of course, and then snap a picture of it with my camera. Although, on later reviewing of my iphone photos, I've realized that they really don't do these homes, in all their beauty, any sort of justice. You have to go and see their intricacies with your own eyes. They're all beautiful. My favorite though was of course, upon further research, the home to the most famous person on the block; the Phillips house. Gorgeous. Intricate. Beautifully colored. Immaculately maintained. Amazing. Yes, the Thriller and Charmed homes are here, as well as Don Draper's childhood home, so I guess they do a lot of filming here and I am sure get lots of tourists and people admiring their homes. Myself, I'm more interested in the original history of the homes, lots of business people are actually the original inhabitants and a congressman. Ahhh... if only I could live in one of these homes. I must. Some day. read more

Carroll Avenue is one of L.A.'s best-kept architectural secrets. Carroll Avenue is located within Angelino Heights, a small historical neighborhood within Echo Park. This avenue is home to some of the most impressive Victorian-era residences (Eastlake and Queen Anne styles) in Los Angeles. Many of these historical residences have served as a backdrop for popular movies and television shows. For example, the Foy House (see attached photo), an Italianate Victorian built in 1872, was filmed in several episodes of the television series Charmed. This avenue was also showcased in Michael Jackson's Thriller video. When I moved to Los Angeles from San Francisco two years ago, I was drawn to this neighborhood because it felt like home. I also appreciate the history; Angelino Heights is the second oldest neighborhood in Los Angeles, second to Bunker Hill. I had the pleasure of living in a restored craftsman bungalow down the street from Carroll Avenue for a year and a half, and am going to miss the twilight strolls down this picturesque avenue. If you're interested in learning more about this neighborhood, The Los Angeles Conservancy holds a tour highlighting the history of the neighborhood and this street, and includes viewing the interiors of some of the homes. The L.A. Conservancy also conducts a scavenger hunt/haunted house tour in the neighborhood during Halloween. Sounds like fun! ;) A link for the tours: http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-conservancy-angelino-heights-tour-los-angeles read more

I guess, with age, one tends to appreciate things she just didn't think she would. When my mom was a realtor, my weekends were spent looking at houses, bored out of my skull. I HATED this aspect of my childhood. And yet a decade and a half or so later, I'm piling friends into the car and we're driving around looking at interesting architecture, people's houses being at the forefront. Carroll Avenue is a whimsical part of L.A. comprised of gorgeous Victorian manors, gathered together from different parts of the city onto this street in Angeleno Heights like a retirement home for old houses. The street has doubled for locations from London to San Francisco and appeared on "Charmed" and "Bones," in "J. Edgar," Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video, and many other movies and TV shows. The house that MJ's on-screen girlfriend runs into to escape the zombies is 1325 Carroll Ave. Bonus geek cred for the red car I've seen parked out in front every time I've visited with a license plate that reads, "UBUNTU." While you're in the area, I thoroughly recommend also visiting nearby Douglas Street and Kensington Road, especially the Queen Anne-style Weller House at 824 E. Kensington. read more

What a fun little walk down the street! Each house had its own stories, passed from one owner to the next. New layers of paint and renovations to keep them as beautiful as ever. Some houses need work, others stand just as beautifully (or even more so) than the day they were built. I love seeing the historical side of LA! I actually caught one of the houses owners (of the purple house) and he gave me a little background on one of the houses on the block. Apparently, the owner bought the house from another block for $1 from the city with the agreement of paying for movement fees to the Carroll ave lot. He had grand plans of renovations for the house but life happens and the finances were not there. The house is a sad sight on the block and the owner currently lives in the basement of the home. Regardless, it's a lovely walk down the short street. If you love this, visit the Bradbury building!! The Last bookstore is close by as well. Have fun! read more
