Shaping Minds After School & Summer Camp

I thought the camp was…read moreopen today since I have registered and prepaid for the rest of the time my daughter was out for winter break. To my dismay, not only the door was closed I had to scramble around to find out later the camp was canceled and they failed to notify me in advance. It was a significant inconvenience to me being that I had to bring my daughter in to work with me until I could make spur of the moment back up care. It's a crying shame that they neglected to notify me and due to past shortcomings with this place I can definitely declare that I shall never enroll my child again with this establishment. My husband and I cannot entrust an establishment with the care of our child with this type of poor service. If I was not insistent on obtaining a refund they would continue to disappoint and provide substandard care.

This shaping minds doubles as a pro martial arts franchise. I initially went to tour the space and…read morethought the space to be extremely small and insufficient for the avg of 45 - 60 kids that go there after school. They completed an unauthorized $249 fee on my cc and when asked why Coach Al simply said I can return it no problem as we have other children on the waiting list. This also happened to another mom that I met that same day who was unsure about enrolling her child as well. Completely unethical business practices. My son wanted to go here badly so against my better judgement I thought to try it out for at least a month. Didn't last a week: There were a host of other problems: conducting additional classes with more kids that they never tell you about ( separate from after school program - karate class only) and cramming the after school kids in a small room in the back, who sit on the floor, with nothing to do while all this shouting is going on). telling my son on day 4 that he was irresponsible and couldn't play on his tablet b/c he didn't clean his cubby. When I asked another coach about this he said that the kids have certain policies that they have to abide by and if they don't they get points taken away. I asked him for copy of said policies and he said it's not written anywhere. So I send my son to a afterschool program to be disciplined by teenagers for not cleaning a cubby and he sits there for an hour with nothing to do all the while kids in the next room are being taught karate....loudly. There are no written policies, I'm sure no license to operate an after school program with this many kids and extremely poor communication in a shoddy make shift space with patched holes in the walls. When I questioned their practices over and over again the coach said well this is clearly not the right place for your son and I will refund you your money right now. Not, here is a copy of our policies and how can we make this right since our discipline practices make you feel uncomfortable. Oh and not to mention, they will not allow you to tour their space while classes are in session (hey don't want you to see how many kids are crammed in there) and will not allow you to come in the space if you just wanted to check in on your kid - also saying this is against their policy??? If my son wasn't so eager to try this place we would not have had to endure this nightmare. Parents beware!

We reached out right away, explained everything and asked if they could make an exception. They absolutely could have if they wanted to, but instead chose to charge us close to $2,000 and kept pointing us back to the contract and legal language. I even appealed directly to both the outgoing and incoming heads of the school, hoping there would be some understanding given the circumstances and how quickly we notified them. Unfortunately, there was none. The saving grace for us was my son's teachers, Mr. Rao and Mrs. Joshi. They were wonderful and we genuinely appreciated them. Beyond that, I was never particularly impressed with the administration or the overall experience. For a school that positions itself as a premier institution and has so many positive accolades, our experience was very different. To us, it felt like a pretty average/subpar school packaged and marketed as something much more. If you are considering AIA, just make sure you read every line of what you sign. Don't assume there will be any flexibility or understanding even when circumstances change within a matter of days.

Sadly nearly every staff member has left since I left but nice to see the place still thriving. For the parents reading this, I went out thinking I would forget or never see anyone BUT some kids went to the same Middle/High School as me! It was awesome to catch up with them after not seeing them for years!! Anyways, I loved this place and would 100% recommend this place to anyone.
