My swan song from a disappointing trip in the bird department. Off the eye test, it doesn't get much better. The beautiful sight of tissi's rotating in front of a fire breathing oven, potatoes in the tray below collecting the chicken juices as they fell, had me ready to run around the Bastille plaza yelling "LE MOUVEMENT!!". I thought this was going to be my first high level bird in the City of Light. Much to my chagrin, the one I got was just lukewarm. I was ready for my fingerprints to be fully burned off. There was so much potential here, but as always, I have to judge what's in front of me. If I don't have my integrity I have nothing. It landed at an 8.1/10 on the restaurant scale which is good, but if it was hot it could have been up there with the greats in the rare 9 territory. Don't get me wrong, the 12 Euro and up wine is great too, but why spend that when you can spend half and drink well? The "grocery store" brands here do not compromise on quality, and there are tons of well-curated items here... my favorites-- well, aside from the wine and beer section-- are: 1) the bottled pancetta and tomato sauce (which is really difficult to find in this store); 2) the chocolate-dipped gaufres (5 to a pack for less than 1.50 Euro); and 3) the store-brand carrot soup. It is very easy to find complements here to round out a great meal around cheese and a baguette from somewhere really good. I was accosted by a young man of the delinquent, possibly homeless variety, who wanted to know if I spoke French and if I could help him have something to eat. My father taught me through example when I was young that if you can offer someone food directly that it was always better than only entrusting them with money, and so, I told him that I did speak French, and given that we were across the street from this Carrefour, I said okay. He went first to the premade food isle. He had pointed out his friend near the entrance as we strode in. His friend waved and was nursing a Heineken. I ignored this and focused on getting him something to eat and moving on. He picked up a couple ready made pastas (that could be eaten cold - they had no microwave out there on the street), some chocolate mousse (even the destitute have taste here in France) and two small lemonades. As I pulled out the money at the cash register to pay, the tight-lipped cashier quickly scanning the items, telling me everything I needed to know about this guy's song and dance by her body language, he had the audacity to ask for some money too. I told him no, politely, and as he continued to press, I waved goodbye and headed out onto the street. Was my good deed ruined? No. I'm sure that he did need food, and that he and his friend would have their hunger sated for at least a while. And I was a bit wiser for the experience, in a number of ways.
