He plays bass in one of those School of Rock type places and is passionate about it. I called my sister to see if there was anything he could use and she sent me a blurry photo of some kind of board he uses and told me he needs a carrying case. I went to Bananas at Large because of their reputation for being kind and knowledgeable. Their reputation is well deserved. I was greeted right when I walked in, I decided to look around a bit before asking for help because while I don't know anything about guitars, some of the instruments they had on the wall were works of art and I enjoy looking at art. When I was ready, I found the first employee, showed him the photo and explained the situation. He knew exactly what it was and where to find what I was looking for. He then took the case over to where they had the exact thing in the photo to show me how well it fit and other features of the case. He explained the 14-day return policy if it turned out to be the wrong thing and let me decide what I wanted to do. I wound up purchasing the case. I loved that I was nicely greeted when I walked in but left alone to browse. I loved that I didn't have to hunt down someone to help me when I was ready. I loved the general vibe of the place. I loved that they had what I needed and clearly a ton of things I might need if I ever decide to get into playing. I loved that parking was easy. I loved that they were excited to help someone who had no idea what they were doing in a guitar shop, were in no hurry to get me out of the store and patient enough to answer all my questions. I even loved that they accept Venmo for payments. Great place to go if you don't know anything about guitars but love someone who does.

True stories of what they've done for me even in just the last month: My guitar needed some repairs before a gig, and they fast tracked the service and ordered an uber to bring the guitar to my house! I wanted a tuner pedal that was out of stock basically everywhere in the country, and they took their last one from Santa Rosa and shipped it to San Rafael store for free for me to pick up the next day. Best of all, I was unhappy with my guitar tone and Dan spent nearly 2 hours sitting with me trying different pedals and setups, before settling on showing me some different settings on my own amp, some different plectrums and swapping a pedal I'd bought recently for only a $10 difference! It would have been so easy to have sold me another pedal or 2 that I didn't really need, but the fact he didn't builds complete trust and makes me a customer for life!

I did not mention that we travel with her Guide Dog (Ferguson) from Guide Dogs For The Blind in San Raphael. We arrived, having traveled an hour from El Cerrito, fully prepared to spend ~$4000, and see if they could order another $4000 worth of gear. While attempting to seat my Blind partner with her pup, a short, young, bespeckled man rushed over and said "No dogs allowed in here." I quickly informed of the "Guide Dog" status, to which he replied "Doesn't matter- you can't have a dog in here". I gently informed him of the law, via ADA, and he repeated, "Doesn't matter, you cant have him in here". At that point, the man behind the counter shouted, over a few customers' heads, that he had allergies and we need to get the dog out. I told him we'll be leaving, but that he should familiarize himself with possible exemptions of ADA rules. My feeling is, that if we had been treated more politely and professionally, we would have been happy to return later, when he was not present, to consummate a win-win deal with a different sales person. Seriously rude treatment from both staff members. This is not a misinterpretation of the exchange; these guys were crude. I am neither vindictive nor litigious by nature, nor is my Blind partner. But in this case, she is seriously considering action.

The serial number places it from the Yamaha factory in Japan in the early 70s. They said that it would be inspected and I would get a phone call about an estimate. They did not review the horn with me. It should have been my first red flag. A few days later I get a call informing me that 'the instrument needs a complete overhaul and that when they put a light in it it was just full of leaks everywhere and would cost $1500 in labor and $200 in parts and that it wasn't worth it because of the value of the instrument' in an arrogant judgmental tone. When I picked up the horn, I was again told about leaks. This told me everything I needed to know because I too have put a light down my instrument to find the leaks and know exactly where a 1972 vintage alto that's never had it's pad replaced is leaking. And it wasn't were he was pointing to. I don't know who hurt you or which horn you're confusing mine with but I felt like I was being lied to. If you didn't want to do the work, simply let me know. Telling me my instrument isn't worth fixing is unacceptable. I determine the value of my horn, not you. And being rude about it is even more unacceptable. I guess with the closing of AG Music in Oakland and abundant USD student rentals, there's no space for the community musician in their shop. Be warned when you cross their handyman-grade aluminum threshold.

I don't actually think that five stars adequately explains my experience with Caroline, who is my current flute teacher. I came to her in my sophomore year of high school, shy and dealing with personal problems I wouldn't wish on any other young teen. I also hadn't been playing the flute for a good two years, and was shaky with the instrument at best. I had barely any confidence in myself or my flute playing ability. The afternoon I arrived at Caroline's (small, white couched) house, I felt comfortable. She was immediately friendly, eager to know me, and more than that, incredibly comfortable with the flute, and able to instill a confidence in me I didn't know existed. Now, whenever I go to Caroline's for a flute lesson/philosophy conversation I let go of all my problems. Caroline is someone I feel utterly comfortable with, who I'm not afraid to make mistakes in front of, and who I can tell anything on the face of the earth. She is an exceptional flutist, I have often told her she's too good, but she teaches with a light touch that makes playing so much fun. I honestly think Caroline is one of the most kindest, awesome, wonderful people ever. Not only can I call her my flute teacher, but I can call her a dear close friend. read more

Caroline has made such a positive impression on me and my daughter in the short time we've worked with her. My 7th grade daughter recently began taking flute lessons with Caroline and after the first lesson, my daughter came home eager and motivated to practice the flute. When I asked her how she would describe Caroline she said she was friendly, encouraging, and has taught her so much in the brief time she's been with her. Caroline is so skilled as a teacher and musician. She is extremely patient and in my case, understands the mind of a shy (especially with adults) adolescent. Caroline provides many tips and techniques to improve and inspires my daughter and myself when she plays to demonstrate. I've started lessons with Caroline in 5th grade when she was advertised as an available flute teacher. Now, I am in 10th grade and I thoroughly enjoy studying under her-I've never missed a year with her and I wouldn't consider another teacher to teach me. Not only is she is an amazing instructor, she is a talented flautist. By using her talent and with her impressive teaching skills, she is one of, if not the BEST teachers to learn from. Yelp is a good place here. - terrible management (extremely worse) - when the class was cancelled, no one notified me - never followed up for any concerns - their lessons didn't follow based on the lesson plan on their website, my child didn't learned much especially they only taught so little from the book material and spent most of the other time on something else - teacher showed up late many times - they never answered phone call or responded to your emails (I tried 3 times in a week for over 2 weeks, then I finally gave up) - some students were out of control and disturbed the class, but the school didn't take any actions or make any improvement - extremely disappointed because I was expected this place would have high standard with clear lesson plans and their costs were high. However, I was wrong! Disappointed! - I can guarantee you that you can find a better place elsewhere than Musically Minded Academy.

They then rehearse which is a bit challenging for younger children - the concept of practicing and performing didn't take hold until day 4 and they had to do some re-writing to accommodate my child's ability to remember/say lines. Anna was very patient and able to meet her at her level. Everything worked out in the end and the Friday performance was adorable. It's definitely more of a casual, family-run place which is refreshing though it may not work well for children that require a lot of supervision. All in all, my child has fond memories of her experience and I know that it'll be much easier for her to participate in future performance-based events.

She made his very first lesson and very first experience with piano fun and easy, warm and inviting and he immediately asked to come back. In fact, he had so much fun during his first lesson, he asked me to draw him a picture of piano keys to keep practicing since we hadn't even bought a piano yet!
